BCA COMMENTS AND CRITICISMS
It's been almost two years since I begin serving on the Sigma
Mu BCA. I was somewhat apprehensive at first. I had been
away from the Chapter for six years and I didn't really know
any of the guys because I had quit coming by the House at
bailgames or coming to Pig Dinner. Had Phi Gamma Delta
left me or had I left Phi Gamma Delta? Brothers, I now know
that I had left.
Over the past two years under the fine leadership of two
great cabinets,I have seen the Fraternity that I knew and loved

On the subject of finances, everybody wants money but
sometimes it is hard to get. The Chapter has gone through
several years of limited budgets. Several years ago, we had a
problem with bills not being paid including IRS. These prob
lems have been solved for the most part by the past two years'
Treasurers, Jeff Horn and Greg Adams, and several of our
accounting graduates. The Chaptei; however, needs financial
support from its graduates. The Mothers' Club has donated
many new pieces offurniture over the past several years. The
house is now over 10 years old and maintenance is getting
to be a problem. Last year at a baseball toumament, 1 was
tion in 1981. 1 found brothers who were seeking gmdance
and direction. They wanted to know how we did the things
that won the Btightman, Baker and Chaney cups. They love

Let me first discuss service. As a BCA member and graduate,
There is a baseball game, a basketball game, but most impor
we have the task ofoffering encouragement, advice and sup
port to the Chapter. The International headquarters has
adopted policies on Risk Management, alcohol and hazing.
1 do not have time to go into each of these, but 1 will touch
on one subject. This past year's cabinet has had to deal with
the policy that no alcoholic beverages can be purchased us
ing chapter funds and the brothers themselves cannot pool
money to buy kegs, cases or make punch. Think back to your
days in the chapter and think about enforcing this policy.

Dinner. Make plans now to be a part of this event. If you
have any suggestions, please call me or Mack Miller, Pig Din

Have a great holiday and 1 look forward to seeing you soon.
1 love all my brothers and I'm proud to be a Phi Gam.

GRADUATE DAY
Sigma Mu held its first ever Graduate Day on November 11,
1989. The turnout wasn't huge, but a good time was had by
all who attended. The day began at 10:30 a.m. with an in
formal greeting ofthe graduates by actives and pledges. Then
we moved into the living room for a slide show featuring the
years 1969-1989. Afterwards we ate lunch together with
bar-b-que fi-om Little Dooey's. For an unprecedented event.
Graduate Day went very well.
Hopefully in the future. Graduate Day will grow in populari
ty and fully serve its purpose - to strengthen the ties bet
ween graduate and undergraduate brothers. Who knows,
maybe one day it could be comparable to a Pig Dinner in
the fall.

Brothers and friends wait for our next event at the Greek Olympiad.
SPORTS
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
In addition to Sigma Mu's active involvement in intramurals,
something new was added to the sports calendar. The Pi Kappa
Alpha chapter at Memphis State put on a Greek Olympiad
am proud to be a FIJI! The chapter has taken great strides
at Mud Island in Memphis and invited fiatemities and
sororities from colleges all over the South to participate. Over
sixty teams from several different schools came to the event.
Sigma Mu sent two teams, each consisting ofeight players,
to compete. All ofthe teams competed in three events: volley
ball, tug-of-wai; and the obstacle course. Phi Gamma Delta
was well represented as both teams did excellent with one of
our teams taking first place in the obstacle course. MSU as a
whole did great also with Sigma Chi winning first in volleyball
and Lambda Chi winning first in tug-of-war. After the games
were over, everyone came back that evening for a concert fea
turing the Hoodoo Gurus at the Mud Island Amphitheatre.
The weekend turned out to be a great one for brotherhood
as several brothers and pledge brothers made the trip to Mem
phis. Leon Brownleei's parents provided a place to stay for the
brothers as weU as food and "refreshments." Everyone had a
great time and was really proud ofthe job our two teams did.
This event just goes to show how Sigma Mu is striving to be
the best in all of the five main points that we stress.
-editor
As 1 reflect over my term as President, 1 must say that 1
in the past year down the road "totvards excellence".
The brothers have put in many man-hours in service to
the campus and community, from tutoring imderprivileged
children to collecting money for the Salvation Army. The
chapter took a big step in hosting a Graduate Day in the M
semester, which we hope grows to become an annual event.
Once again Sigma Mu placed first in grades among all frater
nities with a 2.88 GPA. These are just a few ways in which
the chapter has moved down the path of excellence.
The chapter has continued to be devoted to the communi
ty and the university by giving ofits service and its leadership
abilities both as a chapter and as individuals. Most of all, the
brothers of Sigma Mu have continued to develop life-long
friendships while supporting each other's growth as young men.
We want the fraternity experience to be a life-long one for
you, also. On that note, I want to see you on March 3, 1990,
for the 21st Annual Norris Pig Dinner.

FIJI ACADEMY
On August 9th,seven Sigma Mu's; Robert Cook ('89), Leon
Brownlee ('90), Stacy Murphree ('90), Paul Craft ('91), JefF
Horn ('91), Hud Haas ('91), and Chad Williams ('91); set
out for the 1989 Fiji Academy in Columbus, Ohio. The long
trip from Memphis, Tennessee, began early in the morning
ofthe 9th in brother Murphree's beautifully customized van.
After registering and settling in to our dorms, we all met for
a dinner which made us aU appreciate Julia and Grenda's
ccK>king. That night we all attended a model initiation cere
mony in which eleven neophytes from all over the country
were initiated. It was an awesome sight seeing seven hundred
brothers perform the initiation ceremony. After the ceremony,
we all set out to tackle the Columbus party scene.
The next morning, brothers Murphree, Hom, Craft, and
Williams went to the morning leadership sessions. After a little
sightseeing in the Columbus college district, we all gathered
at the awards ceremony that night. Sigma Mu was awarded
for having grades above the all men's average for twenty-one
consecutive years. Once again we hit the Columbus night life
for the brotherhood that was among us. Several ofus partied
with some of the brothers from Ohio State.
The next day, Murphree, Hom,Craft, and WiUiams again
went to the leadership sessions in the moming. That after
noon, we all attended a session on legal liability. This session
FaU 1989
was quite an eye-opener for all ofus. We all realized that there
are a million ways in which fraternities can be held liable. We
later agreed that we need to exercise a little more caution at
Sigma Mu. That night at the model Nortis Pig Dinner; we
all ate a hearty meal and enjoyed the company of Porter
Robinson and the brothers from LSU. That night we decided
to enjoy the Columbus night hfe one last time. Some of our
party decided to tum in early while a couple of us decided to
remain in the middle of the party until late in the night.
The next moming, we loaded up and headed home full of
stories and with a lot of memories. Special thanks to the
brothers from Hanover, Case Western, Kansas State, Ohio
State, Florida State, Tulane, and UCLA for making Fiji
Academy a special one for Sigma Mu.
