Purple Garter '88
by David Pavllk ('89)
One of the highlights of Fall term 1988 was
Purple Garter which was held on October 15. This
was a proud day for Epsilon Lambda because it was
not only a gathering of many graduate brothers, it
was also a day in which the active brothers could
show off the renovations that have been made to the
Chapter house at 239 Oakhill. During the late days
of last Summer and the early days of Fall, the men at
239 saw the completion of a new living room and a
poolroom. These refurbished rooms were dedicated
in a ribbon-cutting ceremony presided over by Ralph
Shaheen ('72) at 11:00 a.m.
Following this ceremony the active and graduate
brothers participated in a tailgate party at 239 which
was followed by a Spartan victory over Northwest
ern in the annual Homecoming game.
At9:00p.m. October 15,the active and graduate
brothers and their dates reassembled for the annual

couples, mingled at Emil's until 1:30 a.m. The men
from 239 were also pleased to see graduate brother
Roque Vargas-Prada and Rob Rothney from Atlanta
and Doug Beerbower('87)from Connecticut. During
the night's festivities graduate Brother Vince Pangle
('85)was awarded the Distinguished Graduate award
for his work with the Housing Corporation and for

Greetings, from the Fiji House! The Brothers have been
working hard on the house and, with the help of the Housing
Corporation, have remodeled the living room with new wir
ing, walls, lifting fixtures, some furniture, and hardwood
floors. By the time we imdergrads return for winter term there
will be a new roof, insulation and siding on the old house.
The Cabinet's retreat to Lexington was very helpful and
we w^ able to sit in on a Tennessee Tech activation. If you
can possibly manage it, you should take a tour of Headquar
ters. You will nev«- forget it.
The BCA is running well with monthly meetings. Their
next big project will be to get new windows for the house. The
graduates have been a great asset so far in our quest for

Purple Garter was a success. Before the Homecoming
victory over Northwestern, Housing Corporation Vice Presi
dent Ralph Shaheen (*72) cut the ribbon to our beautiful new
living room. At the ^rple Garter dance, Vince Pangle (*85)
received the Distinguished Fiji Award for his excellent woric
as President of the Housing Corporation. Everyone had a
great time talking about old and new times, and we would like
to thank all the graduate brothers who were in attendance. We
hope to see you again at the Norris Pig Dinner February 18,
1989.
Our Philanthropies are going well. We have had two work
sessions at the East Lansing Economic Crisis Center and our
Fall pledge class organized a food drive for them. We also
help^ out at a Greater Lansing Area Halloween party for
youngsters. PatPeplowski and Paul Miller are doing a great
job with Phi Gam philanthropy!
As you can see, we have been pretty busy here at 239
Oakhill. If you haven* t been around lately, it would be great
if you could stop by and see our new living room and all the
other improvements at Epsilon Lambda.
Fraternally,

A MESSAGE FROM THE BCA^
November 18,1988
Dear Graduate Brothers,
As Chairman of the Phi Gam Board of Chapter Advisors
(BCA)for the Epsilon Lambda Chapter,I want to update you
on the BCA's current activities.
The *88-*89 BCA gathered for its first meeting at 239
Oakhill (Ml October 14, 1988 and, together with the under
graduates, set forth the main goals for this cximing year.
The BCA will seek an active role in most all undergradu
ate activities, and will Icxisely monitor the status of all house
operations, functions, and projects. This approach is a posi
tive changefrom BCA groups ofrecent years in that the BCA
will not exist solely as a referential Ixxly. This style of
interaction is strongly supported by both the International
Fraternity and the undergraduates.
Areas of focus will parallel the seven "Standards of
Excellence" as outlined in the Quest For Excellence. This
d(x:umentproposesa designed program fordevelopmentto be
followed by all Fiji chapters, and indeed comprises the new
benchmarks upon which chapters will be monitored in the
future. Interested brothers can obtain a copy ofthis document
from either International or myself.
These standards include scholarship, community and
campus involvement, ideals, graduate relations, as well as
several others.
The '88-'89 BCA primary membership includes Mike
Kastner,Jack Venable, Mickey Rist, Chris Wittenberg, Tim
