EXCELLENCE AT
THETA DEUTERON
PAST PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
After a very successful trip to Denver, Colorado for the
140th Ekklesia, we returned to the chapter house where we
started to plan things for the upcoming year.
This year, the chapter is at full capacity. Theta Deuteron
has a total of sixty-seven members in the fraternity, the largest
on thehill. Of the sixty-seven brothers, twenty-eight arepledges
traveling from homes found all over the United States. Thanks
to the hard work of Don Ryan and Chris Callaghan, I am pleased
to say that the pledge class of this year is one of the best to ever
come into the fraternity. Their extra-curricular activities and
grade point averages from high school were very impressive.
From October 6th to 9th, the Field Secretary, Paul Louis,
May 1989
paid a visit. As usual, he met with every committee head, the
Purple Legionnaire, and Cabinet. Itwasa very informative visit
and greatly appreciated by the brothers and myself. Fallfest was
also a part of that busy weekend. Many parents of actives and
pledges came to meet each other during the brunch and cocktail
party. To say the least, I believe it was a glorious success.
Numerous references were made to the beauty of our house. Fd
like to thank Doug Wamock and the House Corporation for the
work that was done on the exterior of the house. It was much
needed and greatly appreciated.
This year, more than any other year, the University has set
out to enforce the twenty-one age drinking law and I would like
you to know that the Theta Deuteron Chapter is adhering to the
University policy and Phi Gamma Delta policy in every possible
way. By now, the new officers have taken over and I would like
to say that this has been a memorable experience. An experience
that will not be left to "college days alone".
Fraternally,

\r\nLETTER FROM THE NEWLY ELECTED
PRESIDENT
This is the first newsletter in some time, and I guess
everyone hasbeen wonderinghowThetaDeuteron is, and what
we have been up to. Well, we are doing great and Theta
Deuteron is as strong as ever. At the present time we have 67
brothers, 42 which live in the house and 17 new initiates. The
held leadership positions before, but none of which entailed so
much responsibility. As a cabinet member, such responsibilities
include not only correspondence with our alumni, university
and community leaders, but also looking after the welfare of my
brothers and our chapter.
1feel we have done many good things as cabinet members,
but there are still other projects that need to be accomplished in
order to keep our "quest for excellence".
future for the FUI'S at O.W.U. looks great
Through a reconstructed committee system we hope to
achieve a status of total chapter involvement among the under
graduate brothers and new initiates. Hopefully, this will also
serve as a catalyst to stimulate respect for the house and
participation in chapter events.

As a newly elected member to the cabinet, 1know that the

Since the newlyelected cabinet has takenoffice, the highlight
has been the initiation of our seventeen pledges. Our freshmen
are involved in a wide spectrum of campus activities ranging
from varsity sportsto academic honorary societies.
In the days to come, the Theta Deuteron chapter at Ohio
Wesleyan hasseveralgoals toachieve. PhiGamma Delta would
like to continue our dominance in social service, campus rela

ANNOUNCES NEW B.C.A.
The changing campus environment coupled with higher
expectations of Fraternity operations has given rise to the
creation of the Theta Deuteron Board of Chapter Advisors. A
sU-ong commitment was made by Graduate Brothers during this
past Norris Pig Dinner to reactivate the Graduate presence in
Chapter operations. Our intention is to provide support and
guidance in the following key areas: Rush, Graduate and
Campus Relations, Special Days, Newsletter, Pledge Education
and Scholarship.
Central Ohio Graduates including John Guy '60, Dave
Armbrust '82, Dave Paragas '83, and Ken Temple '85 met on
March 11th to develop an action plan to match Graduate
Brothers and Undergraduates holding key positions in the
chapter. Current Cabinet members and committee chairmen
will have designated Graduates working with them in their
respective areas. We believe this type of one-on-one support
from the Graduate Brothers will provide meaningful guidance
to our chapter.

celebration dispelled any negative notions in my mind.
Getting a pin and being greeted on the steps in the
traditional FIJI spirit definitely made me feel great about
my decision.
Prior to Ohio Wesleyan, I spent my high school years
at Belmont Hill, a single sex Eastern prep school. So far,
the friendships I have attained through FIJI have far
surpassed those made in high school.
Looking back, pledgeship has not been easy, but the
added responsibility and challenge has been exciting.

FALL RUSH A SUCCESS
The 1988-89 school year had begun. We were optimistic
about rushing involved freshmen, so that Phi Gamma Delta
could maintain its high standing at Ohio Wesleyan. However,
we did not realize we would be so successful. Twenty-eight
pledges, the largest pledge class on the hill, walked through the
FIJI doors.
Rush Chairman Don Ryan scheduled rush activities daily
throughout the busy two weeks. Some events were trips to
Scioto Downs Race Track and White Sands water slides, and a
New England styled clam bake in our backyard. Our paramount
goal was topledge men who wouldbeactive in the fraternity and
also the Ohio Wesleyan community. This goal was most cer
tainly met. The pledge class of 1989 includes members of the
varsity lacrosse, sailing, basketball, and tennis teams. Other
pledges are active members in WCSA (Wesleyan Council of

in Delaware.
On Saturday, September 17, twenty-eight individuals met
on the steps of FIJI and became one pledge class. With this great
addition, Phi Gamma Delta can continue to pull away from the

the help of faculty advisor. Dr. Jed Burtt and Mrs. Edythe
(MOM) Betts. As if this was not enough, we also helped out a
fellow brother, Brian Rink '88, address and stamp thousands of
letters for his business.
FIJI also did community service for the faculty advisor of
1949, Dr. Marshall. The pledge class of 1989 gardened for Dr.
Marshall twice this year and helped him move his antique stain
glass before Christmas break.
Phi Gamma Delta helped the Red Cross with two blood
drives during this school year. Both drives were enormously
successful and FIJI has become the Red Cross' favorite frater
nity because of our efforts. Ser\'ing as volunteers for the Health
Fair held annually in Branch Rickey Arena, we helped check the
public for high blood pressure, oral hygiene and cancer detec
tion. Several Phi Gams also participated in "The Swim Against
Diabetes" and Ebony and Ivory weekend. All of tliese events
show that Phi Gamma Delta truly cares for and actively partici
pates in the community of Delaware.

FIJI HOSTS A.I.D.S. DISCUSSION
On the nineteenth of October, FIJI hosted an A.I.D.S.
discussion with the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta open to all
students who wished to know the straight facts and best preven
tion tips against the terminal virus. The event drew an impres
sive crowd of seventy people, leaving only standing room in the
FIJI'S living room. Among those who attended were students
from different Greek houses, independenLs, as well as Ohio
Wesleyan faculty members. The guest streaker was Dr. Karen
Peterson from the CAP center (Careers and Planning), who has
worked with people infected with the virus and has also studied
it extensively. Dr. Peterson's agenda for the evening included a

for Phi Gamma Delta. Our first project was running the United

the competition.
Every Thursday morning at precisely 11:00, six brothers

Our largest project was a mass mailing to citizens of
Delaware county and surrounding townships. We stuffed and

The intramural basketball season proved to be a successful
one this year for FIJI. The "Purple Marauders" stormed to a 5-
1 record during regular season while averaging a margin of
victory of 37 points per game. A strong inside game from the
players Jeff Poulos and Matt Curtis coupled with the outstand
ing play of Steve Croncr and Doug Borck led to many victories
for the Phi Gams. The backcourtofChrisCallaghan, JimCroner,

a low scoring contest, FIJI prevailed over Phi Psi 38-30 while a
large crowd of active brothers watched from the sideline. This

FIJI then met the "Untouchables" for the intramural basketball
championship at Branch Rickey Gymnasium. In front of Mom

Untouchables in a hard fought game. However, key freethrows
down the stretch by Jim Croner and amazingball handling by

Leaving no excuse to lose, co-captains Doug Rose and
Scott Lisle frequently held team practices on Monday nights to
prepare for Saturday's games.
Teams such as Chi Phi, Beta and SigmaChi fell victim early
on to the outstanding teamwork and talent of the Purple Maraud
ers. This allowed them to finish the regular season in first place,
getting a "bye" for the opening game of the play-offs.
Using the team's well-rounded skills, they won a tough
game (5-3) against Sig Ep to go on to meet Phi Delt in the
championship game. Of course there was the usual pregame
hype (a lot of hot-air from Phi Delt varsity soccer players), but
the hard work and persistence of the FIJI'S paid off. In a packed
Edwards gym the Purple Marauders out played (10-4) the Phi
Delts to the cheers of their best fans, the FIJI brothers. In the end

REPRESENTATIVES
NEEDED
There have been numerous suggestions to
include information about graduate brothers in
the Theta Dcuteron Star. But to accomplish
this, we need input from the graduates concern
ing their pledge brothers. A class representa
tive system has now been established to do just
that. Each class representative will send in up to
date information about his pledge brothers and
we will print this information in a section called
"Graduate News and Info". This way, the link
between the graduate brothers of Phi Gamma
Delta will never grow weak. If you are inter

class, please send your name, telephone num
