1961 was a year of strong internal

99th Annual State Dinner
by James Hales
Saturday, March 6, 1965, marked the 99th annual Phi
Gamma Delta State Day. The Columbia Club in Indianapolis
was the meeting place for undergraduate brothers from up
and down the Monon. The meeting was hosted by the very
•rT^/'_
active brothers in the Beta Graduate Chapter.
There were many highlights in the evening's festivities.
Prior to dinner the invocation was delivered by Rev. Donald
L. Nead (Hanover '52). Following the dinner Brother Hugh
J. Baker (Ohio State '31 and Archon President, the second
from our state of Indiana) addressed the meeting with a few
words of welcome discussed his experiences with chapters
across the country since he took over the leadership of Phi
Gamma Delta.
Brother William F. Binkley (Purdue '48) chief of section
eleven, made a report and then introduced the presidents of
the Indiana chapters who made progress reports on the

past year's activities.
A memorable part of the evening was the address de
livered by the speaker for the evening Brother John M.
Thompson (Indiana '49) President of the American Fabricated
Products Company, Inc. Brother Thompson's speech was truly
enlightening and enjoyable as he told his experiences in the
fraternity and the business world directed toward attaining
success in the coming years.

Undergrads Elect Officers For 1965
The undergraduate members of Lambda Iota called upon
five new brothers to guide them through the coming year.
At the helm is John Casper Dewenter, a junior, political
science major from Lafayette, Indiana.
Sharing room four with "Casper" is Jeffery William
Covert, treasurer, a junior in mechanical engineering from
Glenview, Illinois.
As usual this State Day provided an opportunity for keen
competition between the "grads" and the under "grads" in
athletics and bridge. Included in the athletic program this
year were basketball and ping-pong.
A firecracker Lambda Iota basketball team, seasoned from
a recent second place intramurals, blocked and knocked their
way to the winning trophy. Several of the team fresh from
gridiron rallied in the true Boilermaker tradition.

Near the close of the evening all of
the chapters competed in a song con
test. Lambda Iota was out to defend the
Flowing Bowl which we won in 1964. As
luck would have it we were again judged
the best and the Bowl was again pre
sented to us by Owen Obetz (Western
Resei-ve '62).
Probably the most sought after award
at State Day is the Beta Graduate Tro
phy. This award, based on the evalua
tion of the Cheney Cup report, is given
to the chapter judged the best in the
state. The presentation of the award to
our new president, John Dewenter ('66),
by Brother John D. Weissert (Indiana
'52) brought to an end Lambda Iota Day
in Indianapolis.
