KAPPA DEUTERON CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
Vol. 4, No. 1
December, 1970
UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
FIJI PLEDGES NINE
Anderson, Griffin; Ray Paris, East Point;
Jim Bozman, Atlanta; and Tom Fitz
gerald, Carrollton.
The new pledges soon started to work.
While doing the normal tasks of cleaning
the house, the pledges found time to have
socials with several different sororities.
After talking with many young ladies,
the pledges picked Miss Julie Short,
Kappa Alpha Theta, as their Pledge
Class Sweetheart.
The Mu Pledge Class invited Dr. John
Curtis of the University Health Services
to speak about the present drug situation
William Tate, Dean of Students, also at
the invitation of the pledges, spoke to the
Chapter about fraternities as they were
when he was a freshman and of their
Fall quarter was highlighted at the
Kappa Deuteron Chapter by the pledging
of nine young men. Three of the new
pledges, Gerald Applefield, Ted Law
rence and Jim Bumgartner, hail from
Athens. Two pledges, Steve "Scoop"
Williams and Bud Duncan, reside in
Chamblee. The four other pledges are
from different parts of the State: Robert
future in this society. In addition, a rush
function which was sponsored by the
Fall Quarter Pledges, resulted in many
freshmen seeing Phi Gam in its true
light and most important of all gave
them a chance to meet the Brothers.
Before the end of this quarter, the
Kappa Deuteron Chapter House will be
covered by the cheers and praises of a
thankful Brotherhood as the Mu Pledge
Class rolls out its pledge project.

INTRAMURALS
Currently, Phi Gamma Delta ranks
third in the Presidents League for Intramurals, oweing to a second place in
football, third place in volleyball, and
a fifth place in horseshoes.
With a regular season football record of
5-1, the Fijis were tied for the champion
ship with Alpha Epsilon Pi and Delta
Tau Delta. Fiji won a bye in the playoff
and when Alpha Epsilon Pi beat Delta
Tau Delta, 6-0, the Championship game
was set.
In 35 degree weather, on November
24, the two teams met for the deciding
game. After having already beaten Alpha
Epsilon Pi in the regular season, 13-6,
the Fijis led at halftime 2-0 on a safety
resulting from a poor snap deep in Alpha
Epsilon Pi territory. In the second half,
however. Alpha Epsilon Pi managed to
sustain
a drive and score. With
two
minutes remaining, a final Fiji surge to
the Alpha Epsilon Pi three-yard line
ground to an abrupt halt after an inter
ception and the gun sounded with Alpha
Epsilon Pi ahead, 7-2.
This was the second year in a row Phi
The annual Kappa Deuteron Christmas Party was held December 3. There was
singing, tree decorating, and rushing as over a hundred people crowded into
the house.
Gamma Delta has lost to Alpha Epsilon
Pi in the football championship game.
The Fiji independent league teams also
repeated last year's performances. The
White Owls won their division, but the
Super Scrubs' perfect record was blem
ished by one victory.

The Kappa Deuteron Chapter House
needed painting desperately. A new
Trick Or Treat
building recently completed next door
now exposed an entire wall, dirty and
flaking, which before had been hidden
by large trees. So a contingent of bro
thers and pledges returned early to Ath
ens and on September 19 and 20, paint
ed the vast side of the house.
"The forces that have been greatest

College Fraternity that moulded me."
No doubt, the hardest part of the job
was assemblying and re-assemblying the
30-foot .scaffolding needed to reach the

ever, was assemblying the brothers to

The Georgia Fijis took to the woods
recently. Saturday, October 24, dawned
on 25 brothers and pledges, intent on
their journey to Brevard, North Carolina,
site of Kappa Deuteron Chapter's Ann
ual Retreat.
Utilizing the facilities of Eagle's Nest
Camp, the group played football, met
for discussions, and generally got to
know each other just a little bit better.
The retreat this year was characterized
by informality and freedom to do what
ever one desired. Many brothers and
pledges hiked to neighboring mountains
for deep soul searching or often for just
friendly conversation. Others threw foot
balls and merely sat around enjoying
the colorful mountain setting on the
warm autumn afternoon.
Saturday night in the firelight of the
cabin meeting hall. Brother Bill Bracewell (Ga. faculty) conducted the only
structured meeting of the retreat, a dis
cussion on sensitivity and its potential
for fraternities.
This was the second year in a row
that Kappa Deuteron Chapter has con
ferred here at Eagle's Nest Camp, snug
in the North Carolina mountains, for
brotherhood and better understanding of
the role of Phi Gamma Delta in each
and every individual's life.
