RETREAT 1976
Rho Phi held its annual retreat
the weekend of January 10 at
picturesque Turkey Run State
Park. Careful planning by brother
Gerry Dail ('78) and a great deal of
cooperation among the brothers
contributed to one of lhe most
successful retreats held in many
years.
Saturday's activities started
out with several free hours which
many brothers took advantage of
to explore the park's network of
paths and trails. The pledge-active
footb-all game took place earlY in
the afternoon accom pan ied bY the
'expert'officiating of PurPle Legionnaire Don Mighell (Texas 156).
The actives kept their undefeated
record intact with another win over
the hapless pledges. The pledge
class was then given a chance to
even things up in the tug-o-war,
but were again defeated by the
act ives.
Following dinner that evening,
Tom'Stogie'Hendrickson
presented his thoughts on four phases
of membership in Phi Gamma
Delta: The Diversif ication obtained
by attending college and joining a
fraternity; Unification with others
through Fiii; Dispersion upon
graduation; Alliance through common ideals as a graduate brother.
Then, io a change from recent
years, retreat was the setting for
the formal pledging of the winter
pledge dlass. This ceremony was a
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
thought-provoking prelude to the
ensuing discussion groups. The
eighty-odd Fiii's present then
broke into small, informal discusI
r
sion groups. From these comes the
greatest benefit of retreat; for out
of the soul-searching and questioning of the past emerges the goals
of the present and hopes for the
f
utu re.
Too earty (as usual), Sunday
morning showed up, and though
retreat was over, its results will be
long felt. Special thanks go to the
fourteen graduate brothers who
gave up their weekend
but
contributed so much to the success
of Retreat '76.
RUSH 1976
Rush, ?s in years past, proved
that the ends justify the means. By
telling the f resh rnen that were
going through rush the truth;
hiding none of our faults nor
over-em phasizi ng our strong points
allowed us to pledge men with
true character and a good basic
understanding of our chapter.
As always Fiji was one of the
first names in the freshmen's
minds. Again this year publication
of the rush map put Phi Gamma
Delta into every f reshmen's room.
The mixer parties, the f irst weekend and a Casino Night the next
Friday night were great contributors to the rush effort.
The end of September brought
some one hundred and f if ty
APR:L1976
rushees to the chapter house for
the first phase in formal rush, the
introductory rush parties. The
lnterf ratern ity Council shou ld be
complimented for its outstanding
iob in handling the details of
formal rush. By the time of the
last formal rush party in early
December, the men at Rho Phi
were confident that only the best
men would make up this year's
winter pledge class.
Of course, Bid Day had the
usual tensions and apprehensions
bef ore the lists of matched names
were released. When the names of
the rushees who matched with Fiii
were read to the eager listeners
that December morning, a great
ioy came over the men of
Phi
Gamma Delta; the long weeks of
rush proved very f ruitf ul. But,
being as Fijis are, we could not
rest knowing that many of our
rushees had not joined our ranks
yet. So, being as Fiiis are, we
confidently went to see those men
who needed one last look or a little
more time to make one of the most
important decisions of their cotlege
careers.
When it was finally over, Phi
Gamma Delta had the best pledge
class on campus. The men who
make up that class are: John
Burkey ('79), Greenville, Tenn.;
Thomas Burtzlaff ('79), Parma,
Ohio; Richard Cahill ('79), Southwick, Mass.; M ichael Chapman

OFF THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
It has of ten
been stated by
uates and u nderg raduates that the f ratern ity has its
ups and downs over the oourse of
a year just as a person has
periodic f luctuations in their mood
and character. While our chapter
has had several ''ups" or periods
of great excitement and enthusiasm in the past year, ltend to
both
g
rad
think that the Rho Phi Chapter has
not experienced a "down" or
anything close to one. ln the past
weeks, what may have appeared to
have been a ''down'' period to a
casual observer was actually a
period of internal growth, restructuring, and strengthening of the
Rho Phi Chapter.
The initial boost to our growth
came with the addition of twenty
men into our chapter as pledges.
The winter pledge class is a hard
working, well organ ized and well
led group who, like their active
brothers, are ready to return third
quarter and show the world what
they've got. After
a series of
money raising projects, the pledges will stage the traditional road
APRIL, 1976
rallye on April g. Although final
plans have not been made, pledge
class president Tom Burtzlaff ('79)
and rallye chairman Rich priem
('79) assure us that it will be the
best dam n rallye ever ru n. lf the
quality of the rallye is as high as
the caliber of our pledge class,
we're in for a great time.
The pledges were introduced to
the chapter by the means of a
f ormal pledg ing at the an n ual
retreat held th is year at Tu rkey
Run State Park. A high level of
graduate.participation, the brothers'enthusiastic attitude, and
Gerry Dail's ('78) excellent organ ization combined to g ive the
chapter a hard push in a positive
Show (April 24)-. The social
will climax the year
with the Fiji lsland festivities on
committee
April 30 and May 1.
All in all, the chapter has been
generating a great deal of 'steam'
over the last few months. With the
coming spring and third quarter,
the brothers will have plenty of
chances to d irect th is 'head of
steam' into productive activities
and prove once again that 'Friendsh ip is the Sweetest lnf Iuence.'

direction. Retreat gave everyone a
chance to reflect on the past year
and anticipate the upcoming year,
but more important, it was a time
to think and talk about our chapter
as it stands now: the brotherhood,
our closeness, our differences, our
mistakes, and most important, our
ideals.
The d ust
st irred u
p in
the
chapter's hal ls at retreat st i I I has
not come to rest, for the new
officers and committee chairmen
will be assimilating the ideas,
complaints, criticisms, and goals
generated at retreat during a one
day conference aimed at directing
the chapter's resources into worthwhile goals. Brother Bill Miller
(lnd iana '62) will be the coord inator of this March 12 meeting which
will help emphasize leadership
skills, coordinate the
leaders'
attitudes and provide the chapter
with a slate of concrete objectives
based on members'input. The
resu lts of the conf erence will be
presented f ormally at our Norris
Pig Dinner on March 21 .
The chapter's growth, strength
and reorgan ization will def in itely
be called upon in the coming third
quarter. One of the most demand-
ing efforts will be the Greek
Weekend events on April 25 which
follows Parent's Day and the Rose
IN SERVICE TO OUR
FOSTERING INSTITUTION
lf you can remember tar

ucation, you'll recall that one of
the first principles you were
taught was that our fraternity
exists f or two primary purposes.
One purpose is for the individual
development of each brother. The
second pu rpose is to serve ou r
fosteri'ng institution, Rose-Huled
man.
The f ratern ity is structured so
that the committees function with
these two pu rposes in m ind. The
Pu bl ic Relat ions com m ittee exemplifies this, coming into being in

Relations Committee into two
independent bodies. The Public
Relations committee was to Plan
and organize the fraternity's campus and community relations
ef f orts, os wel I as the chapter's
social service program.
As the Public Relations committee set about its work, it soon
f ound out that its three duties
were intertwined. ln September
the brothers assisted the Big
Brothers-Big Sisters organization
in their annual fall picnic. While
this was intended to be a social
service effort, it was evident that
our involvement was promoting
that name of the institute in the
community
When the chapter was working
on the dance marathon for the
United Way, it again found that its
social service work was an excellent way to groom community and
campus relations. The Rho Phi
chapter has always maintained
that social service, is a two-way
street; the community as well as
the chapter benef its.
The Rose-Hulman Phi Gamma
Delta chapter is the only campus
f ratern ity to reg u larly entertain
experiences of d iplomatic lif e.

O
To further promote campus
the Pu blic Relations
com m ittee has invited various
relations,
faculty members and administrators and their wives to the Purple
Garter Dance. ln the past, the
guests have enjoyed the gartering
ceremony as much as the more
h ig
h-sig hted brothers have.
ln yet another sense of service,
the brothers are very involved in
cam pus activities and student
izations. For the second
consecutive year a Fiji is the
organ
of the I nterf ratern ity
Council. The outgoing president of
president
the lnstitute of Electrical and as
well as the incoming vice president
and secretary are Fijis. The asso- ciate editor and advertising mana.ger of the school newspaper are
Fiji's. And Rho Phi is well represented in the honor fraternities
and prof essional societies. ln var-
sity athletics, the brothers
are
involved in basketball, tennis, and
golf.
J
ust as the

committee found that its duties are
interrelated , the Rho Ph i chapter
has found its two prim ary purposes
to be likewise. While one serves
the institution that f osters h im, he
also develops the ability to work
with others.
