Fantastic Rush Brings 46 Outstanding Pledges
This year's rush was one of the most
successful in Upsilon Alpha's history, gain
ing for the house forty-six outstanding
pledges. Three major factors contributed
to our success: the new improvements done
on the house, the hard work of all the
active brothers, and the devoted efforts of
Rush Chairman Jim Boice, who did a fan
tastic job.

ing football and acting as a class officer.
Tom plans to become a veterinarian.
From Tucson's Canyon del Ore, we have
Steve Paul, who was his senior class presi
dent. Steve is our pledge class treasurer
and a pre-law major.
Freshman John Thomas was president of
the student body at Coolidge High in Ari
zona. John has hopes at present of be
coming a doctor.

and is majoring in government. A freshman,

who likes to do about everything. Steve is
a L.A. freshman.
An all-district basketball player, Joe
Ballantyne is from Houston, Texas, and is
on the freshman basketball team. Joe was
editor of his high school yearbook and this
year is majoring in finance.

where he lettered three years in football,
track, and baseball.

The adobe fortress enters the new year
with five new and capable leaders. Filling

David Sharp is the Recording Secretary

Secretary. This pair spend most of their
time arguing over who would fill out the
long and tedious membership report. Jim
"Slade" Wyss fills out the cabinet as his

glib spirit.

Drive Results
The Upsilon Alpha Graduate Fund
Drive ended in June netting $5,500 some
what short of the proposed goal. Of this
sum, $4,000 was paid to Rincon Market
toward our debt, five hundred dollars was
spent on house improvements, $500 went to
pay architect fees and the remaining $500
was deposited in the bank.
Some of the major contributors to the

B. Pond, Frederick A. Fielder, Arthur H.

Gary Williams spent two years at the U.S.
Naval Academy before he came to the
University to be the pledge class president.
Guido Mariani comes to 1801 from Salpointe High in Tucson. Guido is a PreMed junior.

psychology. Doug is from Indio, Calif.

This summer at the Fiji Academy, Upsilon Alpha's own Danny Romero won the
coveted Francis M. Durrance Award, given
to the outstanding Purple Legionaire of the
Fraternity. This annual award is based upon
personality, leadership, rapport with chap
ter and fraternity service. Danny received
a standing ovation by the four hundred
plus delegates to the Leadership School
when he was presented the beautiful plaque

where he was president of his youth group.

in Indio, Calif. Dac is a hi-fi buff and likes
golf and photography as a sophomore.
H. K. Gard is in BPA as a freshman
and enjoys swimming. H.K. is our other
Columbus, Ohio, man and plays the guitar.
Steve Boice is from Sonoita where he
wrestled and played football. Steve is ma
joring in agriculture as a freshman.
Steve Mikulic is a junior Pre-Med stu
dent who played football, basketball, and
baseball. He is a second baseman on the
team and comes from South Holland, 111.
Alan Luke is from Tucson High where he
was V.P. of the senior class. Alan is an

The 1969 Homecoming promises to be
a full day of activity. The morning starts
bright and early with the Phi Gams en
tering a float; we're keeping our fingers
crossed to win first place. This year's
theme is "Our Place in Space." Open
house is all day, and if you have any
problems in locating us, our new tele
phone number is 326-5403. Come see
our newly revenated house—we're look
ing forward to seeing you all.
At 2:30 is the game. This year Ari
zona is battling Utah. Brother Bill Miller
will start in the defensive secondary.
The annual cocktail party will be at
the usual place (Pioneer International
Hotel, Varsity Room). The party will
start at 8:00 p.m.
University of Arizona is honoring the
Classes of 1919, 1929, 1944, and 1959.

These accomplishments will undoubtedly be
recorded as another episode in Fiji's being
