k MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Recently I have been asked why I think fraternities shculd continue to
operate on our college cainpuSa
The fraternity offers

The answer is simple^
a real training grotind for. men to learn how to
is the value of a man to himself or others if he
along with his fellow men? Is not this type of
man preparing himself for a career as the type
of learning he receives in a classroom?
Pi Chapter has been unique at Allegheny in that its upperclass members
have been extremely active in a wide variety of campus events^ This exposes
Tonderclassmen to what actually goes into running anything from the student
governnent to a varsity athletic team and consequently inspires them to be
come involved^ Our society needs men who want to get involved^
I am proud to say that in the midst of what appears to be o. crossfire
from students and proffessors^ Pi Chapter is holding the premier position
at Allegheny among fraternity and independent men« The brothers are as
strong in their allegiance and dedication to the fraternity ana the goals
it sets as ever. ¥e are prepared to argue our relevance on the college
campus as often and as long as is necessary. We want to preserve a way of
college life that we do not think should be eliminated. It has done so
much for so many men in the past and continues to do so much for us today
that its relevance is a vital addition to Allegheny's educational effort.
We think our alumni can help us to function at Allegheny College.
One way to do this is of course to come to our alumni functions during the
course of the year to find out for yourselves what is going on in the
fraternity and what our men are like. Of course^ you can also help us
financially, a real need at this tdme.

Dear Fiji Alumni^
During the past few years throughout the country's college campuses
fraternities have been the brunt of blistering faculty and administrative
verbal attacks, TfJhileraost of the criticism comes from persons who have never
experienced fraternity memberships, its spokesmen are so numerous, and their
influence is so predominant that it is difficult to counteract the uixCavorable
publicity, AT^are only of public notices of minority instances of injurious
hazing, fraternity pot parties and crumbling houses, they are ignorant of
devoted comraderie, intellectual groirrbh through give and take of.
minds,and
the social maturation arrived at by honest criticism and remarks rising from
within the framework of the fraternity organization.
The best means of meeting criticism, of course, is to avoid tause for
it. And on Allegheny's campus criticism aimed at the Fraternity of Phi Gamma
Delta is unwarranted.
The men of Pi Chapter contributed immensely to the
college community, athletically, socially and academically. Though they have
made an heroic stand against drug use and abuse, race discrimination, and
dominate exrtracurricular activities they are still under attach. Pi Chapter,
though continuing to follow the direction of campus leadorsMp, but in order
to stand on a firmer foundation, will have to put their own house in order,
which is in dire need of internal repaif*. With costs of labor and material
continuously increasing,, they will need your support.
As Pi Clxapter's new Purple Legionnaire, I urge you to take a stand and
comrait yourselves in favor of Phi Gamma Delta, and to do so with a pledge to
put down the ravenous attacks the fraternity is absorbing, allowing our chapter
the opportunity to uphold with pride the best that is purple and white.
Fraternally yours,
Christopher L, Brown
