CLOSED 'TIL STRIKE END...from The State Journal, Sept. 18, 19^9
Michigan State University will remain closed until a contract with striking mainte
nance and service personnel is ratified. Acting MSU President Walter Adams said today.
He spoke at a press conference in the wake of the announcement late Wednesday
that the university would not open as scheduled on Sept. 22, The delay is caused by the
week-old strike by members of Local 1585, American Federation of State, County and
Municipal Employees.
Members of Local 1585 rejected what Adams termed "the university's last contract
offer" Wednesday afternoon. The vote was 514 no and 316 yes.
In spite of the wide margin, Adams said he is "optimistic about a quick settlement,"
He gave no specific reason for his optimism, but said it stems from the fact that
both union and university negotiators are "reasonable people who realize their obligations
to the students and community."
The university's "final offer", which was rejected Wednesday, was a one-year
proposal calling.for a 26-cent hourly increase for service and maintenance personnel
and a 33-cent hike for skilled tradesmen.
The union, representing 1,400 employees, originally demanded 46 cents per hour
for all employees.
WILLIAMS FOR MSU PRESIDENT?
Michigan State University's trustees have recently been under pressure to either
hire, or don't you dare hire, former Michigan Governor G, Mennen Williams for
president of MSU,
Williams {Michigan '36) is believed to have been supported by political labor union
forces led by Michigan AFL-CIO president August (Gus) Scholle.
The labor force has been reported to be pressuring the 5-3 Democratic majority of
the Board of Trustees to select Williams to the post.
To aid the trustees in selecting a successor for past-president John A, Hannah, who
retired in the spring to take a position with AID in the federal government, the AllUniversity Search and Selection Committee was formed to prepare a list of candidates
from which the trustees agreed to choose.
The committee, formed of faculty, students, alumni
and administrators, submitted a list of four names to the
trustees,
Williams was not on that list.
He was, however, among the over 300 nominees submitted
to the committee to have credentials reviewed.
But, a
committee spokesman said that the university president will
be an academician, not a politician.

The final selection rests with the trustees, and they
may, theoretically go beyond the committee's recommenda
tions to select the president,
Williams has not committed himself as being definitely
interested in the job, but has not denied reports to that
effect, Scholle has said that he has not pressured trustees,
but that he has spoken with them.

CERNAN LANDS AT BLOOMINGTON
Phi Gamma Delta's most celebrated recent-day hero, astronaut Eugene A, Cernan
(Purdue '56), received a greater welcome than would have Frank Norris himself at
the 11th Fiji Academy Norris Pig Dinner in Bloomington, Ind,
Cernan, the Apollo 10 astronaut who wore his Fiji badge on his moon orbit mission,
received flight clearance from Houston and flew this time by plane - to attend the academy
at Indiana University.
Applause by the delegates finally subsided about 10 minutes after Cernan arrived at
the banquet. He addressed the academy amid clicking flashbulbs, and presented the
Fraternity with his historic badge, his Apollo 10 patch and a blown-up photograph of
the earth.
Cernan's powerful impromptu speech was a great message of what Phi Gamma Delta
has meant to Gene Cernan, and he is truly a graduate brother who exemplifies that

2ND PLACE
Improving on last year's third place finish, Fiji teamed with Kappa Alpha Theta to
win runners-up honors in MSU's 47th annual water carnival. Under the catagory,
"Dubious Distinctions," the Fiji-Theta presentation of "MSU's Moo-in Ambassador"
was a humorous anecdote of the cow who jumped (out of Beaumont Tower) over the
moon, Mark McCutchan (72), who had never even seen a water carnival, headed the
float committee, which had an abundance of workers. Due to financial losses, water
carnival may have seen its last river parade. The traditional event is likely to be
dropped in 1970,

OUT.,,
Epsilon Lambda tried to out-smart that oh so predictable Michigan weather, but lost.
The third annual Founders Day Picnic at Lake Lansing Park May 18, was cancelled
due to rain. The picnic was to have matched the Class AAA alumni softball team against
the infamous Diamond Drunks - the undergrads,
"We moved the picnic back two weeks, so we'd have perfect end-of-May weather,"
chairman Larry Lonik (71) said, "but our grounds crew was on strike, so we had no tarp
to keep the field dry. We'd much rather have even lost another one, than have been
rained out,"
Fresh off an IM softball win over SAM, (so what if it was a forfeit) the Fiji Nine had
hoped to end the graduates' win streak at two,

(Grad Picnic - continued)
What with Dave Dougherty gone, Bob Schnedler hung from the nite before and
John "Boog" Steen disabled coupled with Ward Lamphere joining the alumni ranks, things
looked bright for the youngsters.
A sincere thanks to the grads who traveled to East Lansing despite the miserable
weather.

The second annual Parents Day May 4 attracted over 60 parents to the Fiji house,
Glenn Moore (70) headed the festivities, open house, buffet, serenade for the mothers and
the SAM Softball game. Since SAM didn't show up, the varsity scrimmaged the sandlot
spectators in the Bush League Bowl, and the parents loved the imp^rrptuxomedyjof errors.
The parents club also met for its annual meeting.

LIBERALIZED
About midway through Spring term, the administration signed a proposal to permit
fraternities to have limited women visitation in individual rooms.
Modeled after residence
hall policy, fraternity houses may have women "upstairs" from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday
through Thursday. Weekends maybe 24-hour open houses. EL, however, has limited
its open house to 8 p. m, to 1 a. m. on clas s days.
