Dear Freshmen:
The first goal for all those who come to Knox is a quality education. This
is undisputahle, however, there is more to a college education than what is
normally thought of. The emphasis of Phi Gamma Delta is on outstanding achievement
both in the classroom and within the fraternity experience as well.
This
experience outside of the classroom could be termed Social Development for its
members, developing each member to his fullest potential. Learning to be at
ease among others is important to us all. Through a varied social program,
meaning more than just all-campus keggers, every member can work out his
weakpoints and further develope his strengths in social relationships.
Therefore, the fraternity is not primarily a place, but rather an experience
and an investment. It maybe possible to acquire these benefits in a dormitory,
but they would lack purpose, permanence and continuity and would afford
the individual only temporary pride of achievement. This leads us to
the idea that lasting fraternity friendships are built during your
time at Knox. The fraternity enables you to share experiences and
a part of life with men striving for goals like yours. Our inter
national fraternity prides itself of being able to say that Phi
Gamma Delta is "Not for College Days Alone". Evidence of the
importance the fraternity has in the lives of our graduate brothers
comes through the yearly financial support which we receive.
Phi Gamma Delta also encourages its members to become active
participants in campus intramurals and other extra-currucular
activities at Knox; athletics. Union Board, the Gale, the Student, Rifle team etc.
We also pride ourselves on our growing acceptance of a responsibility to the city
of Galesburg which is evident by our Halloween party for the orphanage and day
care center, cancer drive etc. And as stated before the academic obligations
of each individual are stressed; we feel that fraternal living is condusive
to scholastic advancement.
Within the next few days you will have to make a decision whether the
fraternity system at Knox is suited to you. This is not a decision to he made
lightly. Phi Gamma Delta at Knox has much to offer and we hope you will feel
free to come over to the house to see for yourself. This implies no commitment.*
The main purposes of our rush are to make known to you the kind of people
we are and to show you the benefits of fraternal living. We hope we can aid
you in making your decision objectively regarding the greek system by being a
source of information. We are a diversified house and we urge you 1^ come over
anytime to meet personally those of us in the house.
luck in your years at Knox.
We wish you the best of

Whether it is a costume contest (top left), a pumpkin party (top
right), or a late night study session (bottom left), the spirits of
enthusiasm and excitement are always high at Phi Gamma Delta.
The picture on the bottom right is a scene from, our annual
Halloween party which we give for the local orphans and bhildren at
day care centers.
This year we teamed with the Tri-Delts to give
over twenty-five kids their best Halloween ever.
Our three planned parties, one each term, are among the best
events on campus.
She Gam is the outstanding party of fall term.
It is held on
the evening of the Knox-Monmouth football game and includes a live band
Rose Formal, held during winter term is our most formal party.
The pledge class plans and organizes the entertainment for this party.
In the spring. Phi Gamma Delta holds its annual Fiji Island party.
The entire fraternity goes native and decorates the house along a
Tacific Island motif including native costumes and island food. _
Between our major parties we have post-game parties, sorority
exchanges, and various situations that erupt into a funfilled time
for all.

When freshmen confront the fraternity system,
they most often ask questions concerning the cost.
At Phi Gamma Delta, we try to maximize the benefits
you receive from the fraternity without increasing
costs. Though one encounters some additional costs
in fraternity living, we feel that the benefits and
•
experiences far outweigh any of the costs.
3
These additional costs include a pledge fee of
$30 and an initiation fee of $110 in your first
m
year, all of which goes to our International Headquarters. In return for these fees, you receive a
Fiji jersey, a book of the fraternity, your own
fraternity pin, a lifetime subscription to our
fraternity journal, and numerous aids and services
from International Headquarters. Among these ser
vices are scholarships, annual national leadership
conventions, and career contacts with Fiji graduates
throughout the country.

Chapter dues of $38.33
per term are the only other cost. These cover our
parties, composites, intramurals, gifts, cable TV,
newspapers, magazines, etc.

fraternity versus Knox College costs per term:

All expenses we incur are for the current year.
We are
very fortunate to be in a very fine financial condition and
we work together to keep this state over the years.
We here at Phi Gamma Delta feel that anyone wishing to
join the fraternity should not be financially prohibited.
There are five paying jobs in the fraternity to help our
members with financial needs, \^^lile fraternity living does
incur some additional costs, we feel that in the long run
the rewards, experiences, lessons, and insights which we
obtain are most valuable and will benefit us in our postbaccalaureate endeavors.
