GAMMA TAU CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
SPRING 1977
GRADUATE
GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
This year on May 20, as you should already know, Gamma
Tau Is sponsoring a graduate cookout In preparation for our
traditional Island Party which follows the next day. The plans
are to have a big barbeque with plenty of refreshments starting
at six o'clock. Then, around nine a band will begin to liven up
BARBEQUE
the evening.
Being somewhat disappointed with the graduate participa
tion In the past, the chapter hopes that this special barbeque
will get the graduates more Interested In attending our social
functions such as Island Party, Pig Dinner or just plain or
dinary band parties. We like to think that Phi Gamma Delta Is
not just centered around present chapter activity. We feel that
graduate Involvement Is Instrumental to this organization's exIstance. For this reason we have always kept our social func
tions wide open for graduate Involvement and suggestion, and
this spring Is no exception.Once again we strongly urge you to
make plans to attend the festivities of this year's, the biggest
and best yet. Island Party!
NEW
CABINET
winter 1977 brought us another election of officers, who
were Installed February 23. Bill Hogan Is our new president,
replacing recently graduated Jeff Korth. Other new officers are
Jule Kelley(T reasurer), Aaron RIckles(Recording Secretary),
Charles Smith (Corresponding Secretary), and J. Frank
McEachron (historian). We at Gamma Tau feel that these men
are most qualified to lead us to greater accomplishments.
In view of our recent success In winning the Cheney Cup and
IFC trophy as best fraternity on campus. President Hogan
hopes to emphasize horizontal expansion rather than vertical
Improvement, because "there are not very many more awards
to win." The cabinet plans to Improve the committee structure,
and to turn our attention Inwards towards activities like rush
and athletics. They plan to start new traditions (as well as
revitalize old ones) Including IP barbeques and a photo

board, and

A message from
the President
1^-
We had afine year atGeorgiaTech.Lastsummer we brought
the Cheney Cup to Atlanta from the 128th Ekklesia. In addition
we have won the IFC trophy for the best fraternity on campus
for three years in a row, as well as the scholarship trophy for
the best scholastic average on the Tech campus.
We are however, not without some problems.
Last
fall, after two weeks of Rush, we found ourselves with a good,
strong nucleus for a pledge class. Unfortunately It was only a
nucleus. We initiated only eleven new members this year. As a
result, Rush is of high importance now, and will be our main
concern when we come back to school in September. To help
lighten the financial burden of Rush on the Brothers and to
help graduate relations in the Atlanta area, we are opening our
Island Party to all graduates. On Friday night. May 20there will
be a family barbeque and all money from that will be used to
help Fiji Rush next fall.
In addition to Rush, we are also redirecting our energy in
other ways. I would like to see less emphasis on the winning of
trophies and have a "looking inward" attitude among the
brothers. I believe that if we strengthen ourselves from the in
side, for example committee structure and chapter tone, we
will have a better chapter and the awards, both locally and
nationally, will come naturally.
I am optimistic about the coming year. We are a strong
chapter and I am sure that we can overcome any problems that

may arise.

hearty grads have stopped by to lend a hand occasionally.
Dudley Williamson was especially helpful in aquiring a truck
from Six Flags to get bamboo and trees.
The hrst item on this year's agenda was obtaining trees for
the main supports of the huts. It was decided this year that the
trees should be placed before the pool depth had progressed
extensively. The reason for this is that last year there was some
concern about the stability of trees that were set up in the pool
banks at a time when the pool was already half finished.

After the trees were placed, work began in the six main areas
of concern for this year. The first concern, of course, is the
pool. This task is headed by Mike Briggs and Steve Ward who
have been assigned digging teams, each consisting of half of
the active chapter, and each assigned to a designated half of
the pool. This system adds a little competitive enjoyment to the
digging and according to Island Party chairmen Joe Harrison
and Bill Wells "is working quite well."

Charlie Smith is in charge of construction of the Highrise
form. Deciding to no longer let the presumption of locating the
again. This unique design consists of a series of huts topped
band on the service porch restrict our design alternatives, he
has moved the band to the far back corner of the yard on a
rather simple but sturdy platform. This deck was built in pieces
and erected on top of twenty-two 55 galllon chemical drums
which were borrowed from Puritan. This way, the entire sur
face can be dissembled and stored for use next year.
With the finishing touches being added this last week before
the party, the chapter anticipates a very large graduate and un
dergraduate turnout. Remember, Friday night will bring the
off with a twenty-five foot high-dive platform. The lower plat
forms, which get most of the abuse, have been double reinforeced with bamboo and connect to the second row of huts
designed by Sam Venable. This complex includes the
ceremonial hut where the tribal marriage rites will be held.
Also, running through this hut is a cascading waterfall system
designed by Jim Bayer and his fluid flow specialists.
No Island Party is complete without a bridge of some kind.
This year's innovation is the product of Scott Davidson's
thoughtful labors. The bridge, which spans the pool's shallow
end, stretchesfrom the upper level of Sam's hut and terminates
on the 'beach.' Adjacent to this is Mike Heneghan's band plat
barbeque and a band party featuring Soul Invaders. Saturday
is the party all day with music by Tucson and a movie that
night. We are all looking forward to seeing you there! Island
Party is not for college days alone.

SPRING 1977
Graduate
Each year, Gamma Tau, as does any chapter, aquires new
men and loses old ones. Often, the graduating seniors move
out barely noticed by the chapter whose main concern seems
to be with those men whom it doesn't even know yet.
In a way, this is good, since it reflects the chapter's
enthusiasm for its own continuance. However, sometimes in
our 'rush' we forget to acknowledge those people who made
Gamma Tau what it is today. Without them, we would not have
much to show off to Freshmen when they walk through the
door.
The purpose of Gamma Tauk is to aquaint the graduates
more closely with what's going on in the chapter as well as
who's going on from the chapter. In the past year,GammaTau
added thirteen names to its already impressive graduate mail
ing list Steve Adams is now working for the Tennessee Valley
Authority in Knoxville. Ward Hill is still attending Georgia
Tech, studying for his masters in architecture. Mac King is tak
ing a few graduate course and is teaching at the prison in
news
Milledgeville, Georgia. Jim Quina is working for an engineer
ing firm in Atlanta. Tommy Rainey has a job with Puritan
Chemical in Atlanta and plans to attend graduate school at
Stanford in the fall. Tom Rasmussen married Lisa Gillespie
and moved to Flint, Michigan where he works for Dow Corning.
Jim Winters is attending AirForce flight training school inTexas. Sid Burns now works for Southern Company Services in
Dothan doing technical utility work. Joe Anderson has a job
with Southern Athletic Company in Knoxville. Jim Giuliani
works in Charlottesville, Virginia for General Electric and is
now engaged to Patty Reich. Mark and Ann Henley live in
Decatur and visit us often — Mark works for the Federal
Reserve Bank in Atlanta. Jeff Korth married Liz Piskorowski in
March and now works for Proctor and Gamble in Cincinatti.
John Bosky is in Brunswick, Georgia working for Hercules.
Anyone wishing to get in touch with these fortunate young
men can obtain mailing addresses by writing or calling the
house.
