AUGUST 1991
BCA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Another school year is about to begin at Virginia Tech. Are our grads ready to support the
chapter? All the evidence I have seen is that we are ready. I have been getting numerous
questions about when rush is this year, what can we do for the undergrade, etc. You should find
several programs in this newsletter that can use your support.
Support could come in three forms. First is the obvious - MONEY. This may be the easiest form
of support, it only takes a minute to write the check and mail the envelope. Support for the GRAD
STEAK OUT program and the scholarship fund (tax deductible) are excellent ways to support the
chapter.
Second is to support the chapter through phone calls. Call the house, BCA officers or House Corp
officers. We can keep you current on upcoming events, overall chapter status and any immediate
needs that may have come up. We are always fishing for more ideas and newsletter Information.
The chapter may start another rush program this year - find a willing grad to call one of the
rushes in a similar major. Talk with them about what PHI GAMMA DELTA did for you as an
undergrad, and is doing for you now as a graduate.
The third form of support is your personal involvement. Work with the House Corp, BCA or visit
the chapter house. On the calendar of events you will find an * next to the events that grads are
soecifically requested to make an appearance. If you can only make one appearance - call the
house and find out when the need is greatest.
Once you have read the whole newsletter and you still want to know more, feel free to call me.
My numbers are:
home: (703)335-5190(not after 10:00 Eastern time please)
work: (703)689-5919
See you at the house!
Sincerely,
Richard Eskelund
\r\nGRADUATE BROTHER "STEAK OUT"
As you know (or at least should know), we can no longer hold keggers at rush to "drink'em and
pin'em". We must develop a variety of functions that help entice rushes to pledge and
undergraduate brothers to get "fired up". This can be volleyball games, cook outs, and dances to
name a few. These functions should help show not just the social activities, but the service
and academic background of the chapter. One of the best ways to help convey the fine points of
brotherhood is through a cook out when everyone is relaxed and receptive. The BCA would like
the graduates to help the chapter in "steaking out" some new brothers. During rush week, the
chapter would invite out around twenty of their best prospects for a steak cook out and
volleyball game. This will be a private party given by (and funded by) the graduates (can't be a
"rush", because the house must be dry 24 hours from a rush function). Several of us have already
committed ourselves to be there Sept 14th and the rest of you are Invited too (after all there is
only 1 home football game before Oct 19th). After a few weeks of dorm food, a good steak
should get them as receptive as any amount of beer used to. We have to put an investment into
functions like this for rush to be successful. So if you are wiiiing to support this effbrt, be
there and/or send a check to:
Richard Eskelund
9503 Country Roads Lane
Manassas, Va 221 1 1
Checks will need to be made payable to the RHO ALPHA HOUSE CORP, since the BCA does not have
a checking account. If support is strong enough (IE money is left over) we will look to continue
this type of program next semester.
SCHOLARSHIP
International is very pleased with our efforts at establishing a scholarship fund for Rho Alpha.
As of July 10 we had $2107 in the fund with $500 to be paid out to John in August. We will need
to get to $ 10,000 to make it a permanently endowed scholarship. In order to add to the fund, Kim
and I will be having a Christmas party again this year. It will be December 21 and we
will be requesting donations to benefit the Rho Alpha Scholarship fund. Other details will follow
in the next newsletter.
FOOTBALL
Tech is going to have a tough first 1/2 season this year. In case you hadn't noticed, they play 1
home game(JMU), followed by 5 tough road games(teams like Florida State & Oklahoma). When
Tech defeats these teams on the road, I know the undergraduates will be flooded with requests
for tickets to the remaining home games. John has warned me that the undergrads need at least
2 weeks notice to get you tickets with the fraternity(3 weeks is preferred). It is uncomfortable
(and unfair) to crowd 60 people in a space for 50, so plan ahead if you want to sit with us.
Obviously, it helps to get the checks ahead of time too. If you are interested in the ROAD TRIP
to Orlando for the Florida State game - call Danny Kallick (703)750-2554.
PLEDGES
There are three hold-over pledges from last year. They are Glenn Kinnear, Sachln Shah and Mike
Morrone. Call the house if you would like a progress report. They may even tell you when
initiation is planned if you would like to attend.
\r\nBULLETINS
John Hepler was selected as the recipient of the Rho Alpha Chapter Scholarship for 1991. It is a
$500 scholarship again this year. John also was awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Phi
Gamma Delta International Education Foundation(way to go John)!
John Hepler, Greg Rapaport,Jay Bumgardner, Dennis Reece all went to Fiji Academy this year.

Latane', Dan Robl, Rick Gass, Steve Debevoise, Mike O'Brien, Ward Follette, Doug Painter and Don
Kawecki (well - there may have been a few non-fraternity guests also).
Yes - Mike O'Brien is alive and living in NJ (Yuckl)..
Bill Latane' is a father for the second time with the birth of their son James Sanford(bom May
