Davis served as Zeta's president, rush chairman,
and graduate relations chairman, and participated in
intramural tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
In short, over four years, Chad Davis has ac

at lU. He has plotted a course of distinction for everjZeta Fiji to follow, and has contributed to the standard
of excellence that constitutes our chapter.
In looking back on four years of college and on what

ed them well.
The brothers returned to an extensively repaired
and remodeled Beechwood this fall.
Most noticeable were the outside improvements:
shingled trim was built on the walls of the sun
deck, gables were added to the dorm windows,
and the pin light was repaired and replaced.
Inside, the halls were trimmed with wainscotting, and recarpeted. A wall was knocked out
between the Junior Hall candy and pop cubicles,
greatly improving that area's apprearance.
In addition, the New Room was remodeled. The
narrow doorway from Oak Room was rebuilt into
an enclosed bar area, and a new entrance was
built in Oak Hall. The results are excellent, as
the room is now much more accessible for social
functions and football weekends.
The summer-long construction cost over $50,000,
$30,000 of which came in a loan from the Interna
tional Fraternity. Despite such massive expen
ditures, Beechwood is scheduled to undergo
further reparations in the years to come, inorder

with many achievements, yet the
year was not a total success, with
our loss of the ail-campus in
tramurai trophy being the biggest
setback.
A first place finish in scholarship among the fraternities at lU
was an improvement over past years. Zeta won the Beta Graduate
Cup, the IFC basketbaii tourney, and the aii-campus swim meet.
The year was capped with an excellent performance in the Little
500Bike Race, bouncing back from 1979, a year in which we didn't
qualify, to a strong fourth place finish.

Chad Da vis' Acceptance Speech Wilkinson Award Winner 1980
Zeta has had the good fortune of dedicated graduate
and undergraduate support resulting in a tradition of
excellence extending over many years and unsurpass
ed by any other fraternity chapter on our campus.
As a pledge at Zeta, it is immediately evident that
scholarship is of prime importance. Scholarship is the
reason the student is in college, and at Zeta this is
taken seriously. Rounding out the fraternity
experience is a strong emphasis on extracurricular ac
tivities such as chapter committee work and manage
ment, intramurals, and campus and community in
volvement. Finally, and most importantly, there is an
emphasis on the unselfish service to one's fraternity
brothers which has resulted in a
brotherhood the
strength of which I believe is seldom encountered in
any organization, including other college fraternities.
Zeta Chapter is often proudly in contention for the
Cheney Cup.
I would like to extend a personal thank-you to three
Zeta graduate brothers whose efforts have
strengthened Zeta and have had a strong influence on
my fraternity experience: Brother "Bud" Mangels,
whose service to his chapter and to the international
fraternity has been an inspiration to all Zeta brothers
and whose friendhsip I value, Brother William Keck,
who has been an active and enthusiastic participant in
chapter affairs since his graduation in '42, and Brother
Darrall "Peck"Parsons, who was my personal friend,
and a friend of every Zeta brother for over 40 years un
til his dea th in May of this year.
I would challenge each of you undergraduate and
graduate leaders to encourage the other members of
your chapter to become involved in strengthening your
fraternity and insuring that it is a positive influence in
the life of the university and in the lives of its
members. It is through the involvement and efforts of
dedicated individuals that our chapters can reach the
lofty goals that Phi Gamma Delta represents.
I thank you for this honor and for the opportunity to
share with you a few of my thoughts and feelings about
the fraternity and chapter that allow me to say that
I'm "mighty proud to be a Fiji."
Intramurals
Last year Zeta finished fourth in
the all-campus intramural
championship competition. For
i
many chapter houses, this would be
cause for celebration, but it was
somewhat of a disappointment for
the brothers of Zeta.
For the first time in six years, the
Hoosier Phi Gams didn't win the ti
tle.
This fall,
the brothers are
primed for an all-out effort to bring
the title trophy back to Beechwood.
Our first test was a two-day pre
season football tournament spon
sored by the Interfraternity Council.
After three convincing victories, Fiji
found itself facing the Pi Kappa Phis
in the championship game. Un
fortunately, Zeta wound up on the
losing end of a one-point decision,
still a respectable showing for the
first outing of the season.
In the first round of IM regular
season games, four hungry Fiji
teams outscored their opponents 9412! If this is any indication, Zeta is
on the way to reclaiming the IM
championship.
Fiji's soccer team men, its swim
mers, and its tennis and racquetball
players are presently hard at work
gearing for the future IM competi
tions.
