President's Report
Dear Brothers,
The brothers here at W&L's Zeta Deuteron Giapter are
proud to say they belong to Phi Gamma Delta, one of the
top fraternities here on campus.
This year the brothers have taken major steps to turn
Zeta Deuteron around and make FIJI the great fraternity
that it is. With the help and support of our alumni and
leadership of Ed Bishop ('68) and Les Locke ('68), Zeta
Deuteron has taken big steps to meet the standards of
physical operation and appearance set by the University.
These improvements have taken much time, money and
effort by all associated with us, and the improvements have
truly been beneficial.
This year Zeta Deuteron is proud to announce an active
and very successful intramural program, finishing tops in all
fall sports. Congratulations to IM chairman, Chris Kibler
('83).
Zeta Deuteron, under uncontrollable circumstances, had
to elect new officers to its cabinet this fall. The winners
were fine selections. They have provided good leadership
and play a very important role in the complete progress
that Zeta Deuteron has made thus far. The new officers are:
Stew Butler ('83), treasurer; Greg Johnson ('83), corre
sponding secretary; Scott Hall ('83), recording secretary;
and John Perkinson ('83), historian. The brothers look for a
great job by these new officers and give them their total
women from surrounding schools, and have provided good
times for all.
As we all know, rush is the most important event in any
chapter's program, and the Zeta Deuteron Chapter is proud
to announce that halfway through our rush program we
now have a total of ten pledges. Our goal is twenty, and
under the direction of Greg Johnson we will not stop
working until that goal is at least achieved.
All in all, the Zeta Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta at W&L has progressed very steadily in achieving all
of the goals set forth by the House Corporation, the Uni
versity, and most importantly, the goals which we, the
brothers of Zeta Deuteron, have set for ourselves.
Perge!
Fraternally,
support.
Being a fraternity, especially here at W&L, social life is
very important, and thanks to Mike Mahoney ('83) and
Mike Silverman ('81), and the rest of our social committee,
our social life has become the social life of many. Our
parties are bigger, attracting many more W&L students and

FIJI SOCIAL LIFE BETTER THAN EVER
The W&L FIJI'S have started this fall semester off with a
busy, yet refreshing social schedule. The social committee,
headed by Mike Silverman ('8i) and Mike Mahoney ('83),
has managed to put on several fantastic theme-oriented
parties v^ich are bound to have a traditional and lasting
effect on the Zeta Deuteron Fiji's to come.
Kicking off this year's Rush, the social committee put
on a pig roast. The evening was highlighted by an open bar
and a band. The following weekend, Scott Butler ('83) and
Ejay Clark ('83) devised a Heaven and Hell party. This
event was to be so well-planned that much of the W&L
campus was talking about it the following Sunday.
For Parents' Weekend, the social committee, with much
help from President Jerry Broccoli ('81), organized a Casino
Night in which parents' competed with FIJI money for a
door prize. The evening was highlighted by an open bar and
the arrival of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority from James
Madison University.
The W&L FIJI'S welcomed the annual Homecoming
festivities with a party before the Friday night dance, and a
band that Saturday night. Several recent graduates
attended.
Many thanks to all those alumni brothers who con
tributed to the House Corporation for all the renovations.
Without these contributions the renovations could have
never been completed. We have accomplished all the goals
that were set for last year. Among those goals were a new
sewage and plumbing system, a fire escape, and a renovated
Chapter room and living room.
Our House Corporation president Ed Bishop ('68) has
done an outstanding job and has been very patient with the
chapter in working out the financial burden that was placed
on us at the beginning of the year. With his help, we are on
track and the house improvements are proof of it.
The active brothers hope that all alumni come visit the
house and relive some memories. We're looking forward to
meeting you.
Dear Alumni,
As social chairman, I'd like to inform you of the various
functions we've held and those we're looking forward to
holding. The Pig Roast and the Casino Night were two of
the outstanding parties of the year. The Casino Night coin
cided with Parents' Weekend, and as planned, the parents
had a great time with a little help from the well-stocked
open bar.
With the rejuvenated house, we're seeing a lot more girls.
The strong sophomore class also helps in this effort. We've
been haging two or three parties a week. It is believed that
this has strengthened our pledge effort.
FIJI is in the process of evolving from a semi-
deteriorated house to one with a new breath both phy
sically and mentally. We are only too happy to keep you,
our descendants, informed while hoping for your encour
OFFICERS
agement.

Fiji Sports
As the fall sports season progresses, so continues the
tradition of excellent athletic performances by the brothers
of Zeta Deuteron Chapter here at W&L.
No less than 11 Fiji's, including five starters, have
helped the football Generals to their best start since 1963.
Sophomore tailback Chris Cavalline ('83) has paced the
offense with 100.8 yards/game rushing. In one game, he
carried the ball an incredible 46 times for 179 yards. Other
standouts include Jim Forte ('81), Mike Pressler ('82), Tom
Noble ('82), and Andy Foley ('83). In addition, three
members out of a fine group of freshman players have
pledged FIJI, wi th the promise of several more to come.
On the intramural scene, the FIJI gridders are now
looking forward to the playoffs after rolling to a 4-1 regular
season record. Quarterback Ejay Clark ('83) and receiver
Scott Butler ('83) spark an explosive offense while Mike
Silverman ('81), John Fagan ('83), and Chris Kibler ('83)
are just a few of the defensive stars. Rumor has it that the
squad is going all the way to win the championship for
Scottie B., vMo sacrificed his right knee for the FIJI cause
in a recent game.
In IM tennis. Phi Gam has been a bit shorthanded, but
still holds a 2-2 record. Greg Johnson ('83), Mark Mc
Laughlin ('82), and Mike Mahoney ('83), who all play IM
football also, have performed well as has Charles "Thing"
King ('83).
Coming up soon on the IM slate are racquetball, bowl
ing, and the infamous "turkey trot." FIJI spirit is high, and
we look to do well in all three as we shoot for the elusive
overall intramural title.
PLEDGES
The Zeta Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is
presently undergoing a very successful rush. We are half
way to our goal of 20 new brothers, and feel that we can
accomplish this goal by rushing freshmen throughout the
entire year. Our new pledges are:
Jim Forte
Mike Killea
Carlton Peebles
Jed Goad
Steve Waterson
Harry Malzeke
Craig Reilly
Scott Stanton
Win Sisson
David Bamonte
We feel that these new members will be a great asset to
FIJI and hope that we can acquire many other pledges of
this caliber.
