By Brent Campbell ‘00

1998, with Saturday, October 17, theday of the
chapter brunch and the Tech football game.
Tech will host the University of Virginia
Saturday afternoon. The events that will take
place during the weekend at thechapterhouse
are listed on page 7.
Brunch
The popular Saturday morning brunch will
featurea selection ofbreakfastand lunch foods
prepared by the chapter cook, Gene Buran.
Graduates are urged to bring, their families
and friends to the chapter house after the
game. From there, some groups will depart to
Buckhead for an evening on the town.
Brothers mingle in front of the chapter house on a beautiful spring day before the Pig Dinner begins.
Brothers reminisce during well-attended Pig Dinner
By Phil Hankinson ‘00
Pig Dinner 1998 was a huge success.
Graduates who showed up at the house on April 25 filled up on good barbecue
and enjoyed memories of college days. This year’s dinner was held outdoors with
the use ofa large open-air tent rented in case of rain. This allowed brothers to spread
out and enjoy the meal. The extra space
became a necessity because of the large
turnout.
Guests included graduates from numer-
ous decades. The boundaries of age were
crossed by the bonds of brotherhood. There
were several attendees from other chapters.
Mt. Everest presentation
All attendees were treated to an inspira-
tional slide show presentation by Hugh
Morton (Auburn ‘69). The breathtaking pho-
tographic record of his quest to climb Mt.
Everest touched everyone who saw it. His
personal accounts of the difficulties that must
beovercome tocompletesucha daunting task
were only surpassed by the pure emotion of
accomplishing his greatest goal.
Annual awards
After Brother Morton’s presentation the
evening’s focus turned to the presentation of
theannualchapterawards. Georgia Tech Presi-
dent G. Wayne Clough ‘64 was on hand to
accept his induction into the Gamma Tau Hall
of Fame. He humored the audience with re-
flections on his college days at Gamma Tau.
(Continued on page 2)
Tour
The second annual motor tour of Atlanta,
narrated by Bill White ’59, will take place
Sunday morning, Lightbreakfastrefreshments
and food will be served on the bus as it winds
through Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead,
and Virginia Highlands, making a stop along
the way. The sightseeing motor-coach tour
will take three and a half hours.
Memory binder
Abinder has been created containing many
of the old issues of The Gamma Tauk to aid in
keeping a record of chapter history, and it will
be on display during Homecoming so that
returning graduates can reminisce and share
memories with their families. The editions
date back as far as 1932 but a large gap exists
between 1933 and 1958. Graduates who have
any issues from this period are asked to con-
tact Brent Campbell ‘00 at (404) 892-6780 so
that the binder can be completed.
Reservation form
Graduates are encouraged to make plans
and attend this year’s Homecoming with
family and friends. Brothers planning to at-
tend should complete the Homecoming form
included with this issue and return it to
Brent Campbell. Brent should be contacted
at (404) 892-6780 or gt7540@prism.gatech.edu
with questions pertaining to Homecoming
events.
A list of brothers who are invited to 1948
and later class reunions at Georgia Tech and
whom Gamma Tau hopes to see during the
weekend is on page 8.

*Tom Bell ’55 received the Consecutive Pig
Dinner Award once again. The 1999 dinner
will be his 50th. Tom Adams (Emory ’70)
received the Francis “Bumper” C. Bragg
Graduate Support Award. Tom has helped
chapter treasurers enormously by advising
them on correct accounting procedures, as-
sisting with the computerization of all chap-
terfinances, and always finding creative ways
toreduce the chapter's operating expenses. In
addition, Tom participated in a successful
effort to reduce the house property taxes
assessed on Gamma Tau, Inc.
*Inman Houston ’97 was named outstanding
senior. Inman graduated last December after
serving as kitchen chair, treasurer, and presi-
dent. Inman wasaninspirationand modelleader
for those who have followed in his steps.
* Ryan Ott ‘00, who received the outstanding
athlete award, served as athletics chair for the
house last year for good reason. He isa fierce
competitor and strong leader in all the sports
in which he is involved.
*Jeff Miller ‘01 received the outstanding
pledge trophy after completing his term as
pledge class president and becoming an initi-
ated brother. Jeff is currently serving as the
risk management committee chair.
*The Couser Golf Tournament saw its first
back-to-back winner in recent history when
Steven Biles ‘99 retained the coveted Couser
Tournament jacket.
The evening closed with a celebration by the
undergraduates holding a band party at the
house until the early hours of the morning.
Attendees who registered in the guestbook
are listed in the FIJI Fables columns of this
issue. Co-chairs for the dinner were Phil
Hankinson ‘00 and Brent Campbell ‘00.
The Gamma Tauk is published at least twice
annually by the Gamma Tau Chapter
of Phi Gamma Delta at the
Georgia Institute of Technology.

Gamma TAuK
User-friendly comprehensive web site, e-mail system connect brothers
By Chris Adams ‘01
The new Communications Committee
formed by Gamma Tau will facilitate commu-
nication among current and graduate broth-
ersand the outside world through the Internet
and other new media.
This will beachieved by maintaining a web
site, communicating through e-mail, and as-
isting other committees in the communica-
tion and implementation of their goals for the
betterment of the chapter.
E-mail and web site
Two of the main media being used to
improve communication are a graduate e-
mail system and a new web site. The e-mail
system is based on e-mail aliases, and is due
in large part to the work of Tony Antoniades
91. Currently any Gamma Tau graduate is
able to send e-mail to a graduate brother
based on the receiver's first initial and last
name and the new gtfiji.com domain name.
Asender will not need to know a brother's e-
mail address at an Internet service provider
or online service.
Here is an example of the e-mail system.
Joe Baumgartner ’68 hasa real e-mail address:
joe.s.baumgartner@scsnet.com. Using thenew
system, e-mail can be sent to Joe without
knowing his real e-mail address by sending it
to jbaumgartner@gtfiji.com. All e-mail aliases
will follow the convention of first initial and
last name @gttijicom.
The only time this convention will not ap-
ply is if more than one graduate brother has
thesame firstinitial and lastname. In this case,
all brothers who graduate after the first will
have an e-mail address that follows the con-
vention of first initial, last name, followed by
graduation year. So, using the above example,
ifa brother named Jason Baumgartner gradu-
ated in 1989, his e-mail address would be
jbaumgartner89@gtfiji.com, whileJoe’s would
remain jbaumgartner@gtfiji.com.
Aliases will also be set up for
president@gtfiji.com, webmaster@gttiji.com,
and other generic positions. E-mail will be
automatically forwarded from the alias to the
person’s actual e-mail address.
A table showing each graduate’s name and
e-mailaddress will bemaintained inthe gradu-
ate section of the web site. Thus, the table can
always be checked to confirm a graduate's
alias e-mail address.
Important requirement
One important requirement must be met.
In order for a graduate to have his e-mail
delivered in this manner, he must notify
Gamma Tau of his actual e-mail address in
order for the link to be established on the
house server. Register e-mail addresses
through the web site www.gtfiji.com,
through e-mail at webmaster@gtfiji.com, or
by mailing your e-mail address in writing to
Brent Campbell, 841 Fowler St., NW, At-
lanta, GA 30332.
Web site
More detailed information on the system
and its progress is contained in the graduate
section of the Gamma Tau web site, which
can be found at http://www.gtfiji.com. It
represents a powerful tool for increasing
communication among undergraduates and
graduates and can also give non-brothers
and rushees a good first impression of our
chapter. While the site is still under devel-
opment, many of the pages are up and
running.
Three site sections
The site is divided into three sections:
undergraduates, graduates, and guests. The
undergraduate section contains pages for
each committee, creating extensive com-
munication between the communications
committee, all the other committees, and
the rest of the chapter. An undergraduate e-
mail list has also been set up to increase this
communication.
The graduate section provides general
graduate news and information. It will also
contain information on the Pig Dinner and
Homecoming for each year. There will be a
registration section, a section for the e-mail
system and e-mail database, and a Gamma
Tau 75th anniversary section.
Additionally, The Gamma Tauk will be pre-
sented online. It will still continue, however,
tobe mailed to graduates. The whole gradu-
ate section is devoted to helping graduates
stay more informed and involved in the
house and in touch with each other.
The guest section contains general infor-
mation fornon-members of the fraternity. It
has details on rush and general information
about Phi Gamma Delta. It will also have
pictures ofall the brothers and a special page
for the graduating seniors.
Comments or suggestions for the commu-
nications committee should be directed to
the graduate relations chairman, Brent
Campbell, at gt7540a@prism.gatech.edu or
Chris Adams at webmaster@gtfijicom.
