The 1998 Ekklesia, celebrating Phi
Gamma Delta's 150th anniversary,
will be a special event. Plans are
already under way to hold the
largest, greatest, and most
significant event in our Fraternity's
history in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
The event will be held on August
12-16 at The Westin William Penn
(site of the 100th Ekklesia).
Special sesquicentennial events
include a visit to the Alpha
Chapter at Washington & Jefferson
College and a trip to the log cabin
where the Immortal Six first met in
1848.
Anyone interested in attending,
please contact Joe Weist for
information. You can also find
information and registration forms
on the international home page.

Carl Hartmann Nominated for Wilkinson Award
As you may remember, every year
an award is given to the most
outstanding senior member of Phi
Gamma Delta. It is called the
Wilkinson Award and the
competition starts on the chapter
level. Each chapter holds a vote to
decide who is the most outstanding
senior in the
chapter. The
candidate then
competes with other
brothers on the
regional level. The
regional
representative
advances to the
international
competition where
the final winner is
selected. Each
chapter's candidate
must submit three
letters of
recommendation
from their peers and
fraternity and school officials, a
transcript, color photo, and a
formal application. This year the
Rho Phi chapter nominated Carl
Hartmann III and, though he did
not win the award, Carl was a
worthy candidate.
Carl was very active at RoseHulman and with FIJI. He
graduated from Avon High School
in Avon, Indiana and entered Rose
in the fall of 1994 majoring in
Chemical Engineering. At Rose,
Carl was active in the Student
Government
Association where
he was a student
representative and
served as the
director of the Club
Relations
Committee. Carl
was also a member
of the Blue Key
Honor Fraternity
and Honor Key.
In addition to
school activities,
Carl was very
involved with FIJI.
This devotion was
shown by his attendance at the
148th Ekklesia as a chapter
representative and his involvement
with the Scholarship and Activities
Committees as Chairman.
In addition this, Carl was always
enjoyable to be around and knew
how to have a lot of fun. Through
his four years at Rose, Carl gained
some valuable real world
experience. He spent a summer
interning for Reily Industries in
Indianapolis. The summer before
and during his senior year he
worked for Tredegar Industries in
Terre Haute where he was involved
in developing products for Proctor
and Gamble.
After graduation, Carl moved to
Anderson, South Carolina and is
currently working for Milikin &
Company as a Process
Improvement Engineer in their
Pendleton Finishing Plant in
Pendleton, South Carolina.
We would like to congratulate Carl
on this nomination for the
Wilkinson Award and wish him the
best of luck with his new location
and job.

\r\nPhi Gamma Delta
A Letter from the Chairman....
Last February, Bill Linstaedt, Joe
Weist, Aaron Weishaar and myself
discussed ideas about how to keep
graduates of the Rho Phi chapter of Phi
Gamma Delta interested in Fiji. We
talked about several things that we felt
could have been improved with
graduate relations within the chapter
while we were in school, as well as
ways to bring graduates back together
after school. It was agreed that the
best events for bringing graduates back
to the chapter were the standard events
that have been held for years but that
other events could be held in regional
areas to keep brothers in contact with
each other.
We felt that graduate brothers did not
drift apart because they wanted to, but
they didn't go out of their way to plan
to see each other. As our lives
continue past college, it is to easy to
not keep in contact if there aren't easy
avenues to do so. With this in mind,
we felt that if a group of people
planned events and opened new doors
of interaction, brothers would attend
and enjoy some of the old times that
they shared as a Fiji. All of this led to
the Rho Phi Graduate Association.
Aaron and I agreed to chair this
committee and plan some events for
fellow graduate brothers. So far, we
have held two events and have planned
a few others.
Graduate Picnic
Notice!!
Make sure you look
at the enclosed flyer
discussing the upcoming
Rho Phi Graduate Picinic
in Indianapolis. This is our
first big event and we hope
to see as many people there
as possibe. This event
should be a good time for
all graduates. See you
there.
We have also sent out a survey to get
other brothers involved and hear what
it is that graduates would like to see
from a Graduate Association. This
survey has helped us to think of new
ideas and put some focus on what we
are trying to accomplish. This
newsletter is one of the things that
many of you felt would be a good start.
While it does not contain all of the
ideas that were shared with us, it does
capture some of them. We are working
on some other things and hope that we
will be able to incorporate all of your
ideas in the future.
The number one response to the survey
dealt with the chapter’s web page. For
those of you that have not looked at it
lately, it has changed considerably. Joe
Weist has spent hours editing and
changing the web-site and it is much
improved. It also now contains an online Fiji finder for those of you that
requested it. Joe plans to turn the site
back over to the chapter, and we will
make sure that they keep it as up to
date as possible in the future.
We are also planning a summer picnic.
The plans for this are set for the 12th of
September at Eagle Creek Park in
Indianapolis. The times for the picnic
are not finalized, but we do have the
pavilion all day. We hope that many of
you will set this date aside and plan to
attend. We will be sending out more
information soon on this event.
Brothers, I hope that you will accept
the new Graduate Association and
share your ideas with us. Anyone that
is interested in helping with an event or
has ideas to share, please feel free to
contact us.
You can reach me at 317-889-5281 or
via e-mail at HubbsT@AOL.com.
The new Rho Phi Graduate Association
is not just a few brothers committee,
but it is every graduate Fiji's
committee. I realize that not all of you
will be able to help plan events, but
please attend some events. The more
of you that participate, the more
enjoyable it will be for everyone.
Please help us make Fiji not for college
days alone.
Fraternally,
Todd Hubbell

Chapter Update
The Rho Phi Chapter is still keeping busy as the year comes to an end. We have
had about $17,000 granted to the house by the House Corporation for some much
needed repairs. Some of the repairs are already taking place such as replacing the
concrete in front of the basketball hoop and miscellaneous repairs around the
house. This summer we will get new furniture and carpet in the living room, new
tables and chairs in the dining room, and new carpet in the bedrooms.
We have also kept busy volunteering in the community. Since State Day, we have
given nearly 1000 hours to activities like highway clean-up and the Mother's
Resource Program. Mother's Resource has asked us to watch over the young
children of battered mother's, while their mothers attend parenting classes.
We are all looking forward to next year's 30th anniversary, and hope to see many
Graduate Brothers back for the festivities.
Fraternally,
Todd Melby, Corresponding Secretary
