GOD FIRST, FAMILY SECOND
AND EPSILON CHAPTER IS THIRD
“I
could go on continuously about what Phi Gamma Delta has
done for me, but suffice it to say that, after God and family,
this great fraternity and Epsilon chapter are very much a part
of my life to this day.”
That’s how Marvin J. Carver III ’75 feels about the
fraternity, which has remained an integral part since he
graduated from the University of North Carolina with a
bachelor of arts degree in history in 1975.
“Rarely a day goes by that my chapter brother and fellow
Merrill Lynch broker, Jim Sessoms ’76, do not go to lunch
and share stories about the good old days at Epsilon,” he said.
Marvin, now first vice president with Merrill Lynch in
Durham, N.C., has been with the company for 25 years. He
has served mostly in the retail sales side of the business and is
a senior member of a three-person team.
’40s and ’50s Reunion
BROTHERS RECALL HOUSE
MOTHERS, BIG BANDS
I
n May more than 30 Epsilon chapter brothers from eastern
North Carolina gathered for a luncheon at the Greenville
Country Club. Those in attendance included Ted Haigler ’46,
John Webb ’50, Paul Bissette ’47, Dave Tayloe ’46, Billy Mayo
’48, Ben Yelverton ’51, Dick Greene ’48, Dave Whichard ’48,
Jack Whichard ’48, Bill Hedrick ’51, Buddy Broughton ’48, Bill
Ellington ’50, Billy Quarles ’52 and Benny Walser ’52.
The brothers had a good time renewing old acquaintances
and reminiscing about their days in Chapel Hill.
“When we were in Chapel Hill,” Jack Whichard recalled,
“the fraternity had a house mother who lived in an apartment
within the house. She oversaw the general appearance of the
house and had fresh flowers there when they were available.
She also acted as a chaperone whenever the fraternity members who lived in the house had girls over. Girls were only
allowed on the main floor. I always enjoyed the formal dances,
which were held several times during the year and were
sponsored by the Interfraternity Council.”
He adds that big-name bands such as those led by Harry
James, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey were among the
entertainment at such events.
He and his wife, Debbie, recently celebrated their 20th
anniversary.
“I am indebted to a great Phi Gam friend, Larry Caison ’77,
for introducing me to the girl of my dreams,” Marvin said. The
couple has two children, Marvin J. “Jeff” Carver IV, born in
1994, and Margaret Barrett Carver, born in 1990.
Favorite memories of his fraternity days include roadtrips
with Pop Cashion ’63 to Charleston; and going to away football
games with Hunter Davis ’77, Tim Gibbon ’74, Charles “The
Other Half” Young ’77 and Jim Sessoms. He also enjoyed
going to stock-car races at Darlington with Billy Worsham ’75,
Ed Peele ’77 and David Beach ’76. In fact, Marvin’s old
nickname was NASCARver, because he often went to stock-car
races at Daytona, Charlotte and Martinsville. “I would never let
a race compete with my study schedule,” he said.
He also had great fun at beach weekends, and, of course, Fiji
Island. He has particularly fond memories of Pig Dinner, when
many Epsilon graduate brothers would come back to reiterate
that “Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone.”
Marvin first joined the fraternity because seniors like Fred
Dula ’72 and David Joyner ’72, along with Ted Griffin, a good
friend from Durham, made him recognize the chapter’s genuine
desire to have him join Phi Gamma Delta.
“They really got to know me as someone who could benefit
from what Epsilon chapter could do to help an undergraduate
grow up,” he said. “They also saw the attributes I could bring
to the chapter.”
As an undergraduate, his roommates included Buck “Gums”
Buckman ’75 during sophomore year, whom Marvin describes
as “one of my best buddies and pledge brother.” During junior
year, his roommates were Billy Worsham and Kevin Easley, a
social affiliate and brother of Mike Easley ’72.
From his time of rooming with Buck, Marvin says, “The
event that stands out most prominent was an early Sunday
phone call from Buck to come pick him up to go and get his car
from where he had ‘parked’ it off the highway between two

ohn Beall ’70 and his wife,
Josephine, will celebrate their 30th
anniversary next June. The couple has
three children. The oldest is daughter
Cameron, 26, who graduated from the
University of Georgia and has a master’s
degree in social work. She is employed
by an independent adoption agency in
Atlanta. The middle child is Caroline,
22, who also graduated from Georgia,
receiving a degree in interior design.
She works for a design firm in Charlotte.
John and Josephine’s youngest is
Jonathan, 20, who is a sophomore at
N.C. State. Jonathan is an SAE, and
two of his fraternity brothers are
Thomas Nisbet and Gray Johnsey,
whose fathers were Phi Gams who
graduated in 1971. All three dads and
their three sons had a great time at the
recent SAE parents weekend in Raleigh.
John sold his oil business in Lenoir
in 1998 to an electric cooperative.
Shortly after that, he and Josephine
moved to Blowing Rock. They recently
moved into a new home they built there.
“We are truly enjoying life,” says
John. “I’m involved in several real
estate development projects, as well as
the capital campaign to build a commu-
nity arts center in Blowing Rock. We
are also very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Lenoir.”
Fellow Phi Gams with whom John
keeps in regular contact include Scott
Richardson ’71, Rusty Carter ’71,
brother-in-law Bert Williams ’72,
Charlie Brindell ’71, John Elmore ’70,
Tom Nisbet ’72, Andy Heath ’70, Chip
Williamson ’83 (who also lives in
Blowing Rock), Charles Wilkins ’65 and
Gary Renegar ’66.
John’s nephew, Tram Williams, is
currently a Phi Gam pledge.

trees, only to find later that the highway patrol had towed it
away.”
As an undergraduate, Marvin served the chapter for two
years as rush chairman and one year as corresponding secretary. He was also active with the Young Republicans.
Later, he served for two years as assistant executive
secretary of the international fraternity in 1976-78, as chief of
Section VII from 1979 to 1990, and as house corporation
president of Epsilon chapter. Marvin sat on the financial
advisory board in 1994-98 and on the fraternity’s board of
trustees for two years. He was elected archon treasurer in 1998
by the 150th Ekklesia. He is now archon secretary of the Phi
Gamma Delta International Fraternity, and will soon complete
his four-year term.
In other activities, he is the former president of the Southwest
Durham Rotary Club, is on the executive committee of the UNC
Educational Foundation, and is a member of the board of visitors
of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC
Hospitals. He is also on the board of trustees and administrative
board of the Epworth United Methodist Church.
Marvin remains in regular contact with Jim Sessoms, Buck
Buckman, Frank Pierce, Larry Caison ’78 and Tom Niesbit.
“I would love to hear from Tim Gibbons ’74, and I miss the
frequent meetings we used to have with Pop Cashion,” he adds.
In his spare time, Marvin indulges a passion for electric
trains. “I have an extensive electric train collection,” he says.
“I’m in the process of building a facility on my property to
finally have the space to build and operate my electric trains.
Lionel makes the large trains, and it is difficult to operate them
without adequate space.”
He also enjoys salt-water fishing and cultivating roses. In
the future, he says, he is looking forward to slowing down a bit
and devoting more of his time to the Epsilon chapter.
Of the current undergraduates, he says, “They still exemplify the high ideals that Epsilon has traditionally prided itself
on. The chapter cherishes its position as the premier chapter
on campus, and continues to strengthen its hold on all of
eastern North Carolina’s finest men.”
However, he adds, he would like to see the chapter’s
recruitment be broadened to include men from other parts of
the state as well as from out of state.
Finally, he believes that the Epsilon chapter, which is more
than 150 years old, has much to teach others across the U.S.
“Our chapter does so many things well,” he says. “Why not
broadcast the goodwill this creates on campus? Why not share
that with other Phi Gams across the country? Many other Phi
Gamma Delta chapters at other campuses could learn a great
deal from our chapter.”

hen you visit the Supreme Court of North Carolina, look for the portrait of your Fiji brother, John
Webb ’50. The painting by John’s brother, and your
brother, Arch Webb ’50, is on permanent display in the
Supreme Court. John Webb served as associate state
supreme court justice from 1986 until his retirement in
1998.
John has had a long and distinguished career as a
lawyer and jurist. After attending the University of
North Carolina and graduating from the School of
Law of Columbia University, he practiced in New
York and North Carolina. He was appointed by
Governor Robert W. Scott as a Superior Court judge
in 1971 and to the Court of Appeals in 1977 by Governor James B. Hunt Jr. In 1986, John was elected to the
Supreme Court of North Carolina, where he served
until his retirement in 1998.
John’s interests and activities have not been limited to
the field of law. He has a keen interest in all phases of
athletics and is an avid booster of the athletic programs at
UNC-Chapel Hill. As a faithful member of the First Baptist
Church in Wilson, N.C., he has taught the men’s Bible class
all his adult life and served on its board of deacons.
