of the Year
Mark your calendars for May 15-18, 2003, the dates of the 2003 Karl Belczyk Reunion
Weekend. This year's event will be held in beautiful and historic Annapolis, Md. The
centerpiece of the event will be at the Pimlico Racetrack, where we will witness the 128"'
running of the Preakness Stakes.
For those that did not know him, Karl '84 was the embodiment of what 128 Madison
Undergrad
Lane stands for. Whether you needed academic help, assistance repairing the house, someone
to go drinking with, or someone to lead the Omicrons to the 1983 Intramural Championship,
Karl never let his brothers down. And he did it all with a smile on his face. After graduation,
Karl joined the U.S. Navy, fulfilling his dream of becoming a fighter pilot.
Karl was lost over the Atlantic in 1994. At his funeral, his pledge brother John Suttles '84
remarked that it was a shame that most of us only saw each other at weddings and funerals.
John organized the first reunion the following spring

Each year the event draws Omicron Fijis
spanning at least 25 years, and each year we have
long-lost brothers crawl out of the woodwork to
attend and renew friendships. This event is a
tremendous opportunity to see old friends and to

As Erik Kisa '80 said after last year's reunion in
Dewey Beach, most folks sit around after college
and talk about their memories. We go out and make
new ones each year with friends old and new. Please
plan on attending this year's reunion and becoming
part of this tradition. For details please check out
www.geocities.com/smedsl28/, or contact Scott
Medvetz '83 (410-329-3953, medvetz@abs.net).

This past year marked Fiji's first full academic year on
grounds since we re-colonized and can only be described as
an overwhelming success. In only a year our house has
nearly doubled in size as we forged one of the strongest
brotherhoods at the University.
We are proud to have reclaimed our house at 128
Madison Lane this year and renovation efforts began in
earnest over winter break to transform the aging structure
philanthropic event, the Fiji Frisbee Golf Tournament. We
have had a very active social calendar with numerous events
ranging from mixers with sororities to date functions in our
newly renovated house. Our main social event last semester,
the Black Diamond Formal, was held in Farmington Country
Club and was a huge success. Foxfields and our Fiji Island
party rounded out a great year.
Perhaps our greatest achievement over the past semester
into one of the most attractive at the University. Thus far the
was our success recruiting some of the best men at UVA
front of the house has been completely refinished and
during Spring Rush. Our hard work and determination helped
us yield the second largest pledge class of any fraternity on
grounds. We are very proud of our 22 new pledges, who
exemplify everything a Fiji gentleman truly is — each
represents athletics, scholarship, leadership, good character,
and service. These men represent a very diverse group ranging
repainted. In the interior the first floor has also received a
complete facelift, with new carpets and furniture in addition
to fresh coats of paint on all the walls. The Fiji house is now
truly one of the most attractive fraternities on grounds.
The brotherhood has been extremely active in all aspects
of fraternity life over the last year. Our house was very
competitive in a number of intramural sports, including
soccer, basketball, hockey, and softball to name a few. In
terms of service, our chapter has enthusiastically sought out
ways to give back to the greater Charlottesviile community
through projects with both Madison Hou,se and the Multiple
Sclerosis Society. We have also sponsored a Fiji Bar Night to
raise money for charity and are proud of our new annual
from national merit scholars to an owner of a small business
and each adds something unique that strengthens our fraternity.
After only about a year as a Phi Gamma Delta colony we
have built one of the most influential and far-reaching
fraternities on grounds. 1 am very proud of all we have
accomplished over the past year and look forward to even
more success in the future as we strive to regain our charter
and build an even stronger brotherhood.

On April 5, 2003, the Omicron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta enjoyed yet another wonderful pig
dinner. However this social dinner for brothers, alumni, and pledges was not isolated to a lone
night but rather was a day filled with events.
Alumni and brothers enjoyed a delicious brunch at the beautiful Greencroft Club. It was a
chance for everyone to get acquainted. After brunch the brotherhood and alumni made it over
to Klockner Stadium to watch an exciting lacrosse match between the University of Virginia
Cavaliers, and the Tar Heels of North Carolina. The Cavaliers were able to end a two-game losing
streak, and down the Tar Heels 10 to 7. Following the game, everyone was invited to back to the
Fiji house. It was a chance for alumni to see all the amazing renovations that have taken place
on the house, and to see what is in store.

In the evening a cocktail hour commenced at the stunning Farmington Country Club. The
ceremony was finally launched with the arrival of the pig. As tradition dictates, the oldest
brother in the room kissed the pig first, followed by the next oldest, all the way down to the
youngest. A delicious dinner was served and enjoyed by all.
A1 Golden gave a wonderful speech after dinner. His insightful comments into UVA
football, and lessons he has learned in life were very motivating. Rick Swift '74, Ray Humiston
'74 and Chapter President Justin Bonner, also gave speeches, while Chapter Corresponding
