RECORD TENTH CHENEY CUP WIN LEADS KAPPA
DEUTERON'S MOST DECORATED YEAR EVER!
For the fourth time in the past six years,
and the tenth time in our history. Kappa
Deuteron has once again reclaimed Phi
Gamma Delta's Cheney Efficiency Cup.
This time the award given to the best
chapter in the nation didn't come alone.
For the seventh time in the past eight
years Kappa Deuteron was awarded the
Zerman Trophy, given to the best chapter
regarding extracurricular activities.
For
the first time ever the chapter earned the
Baker Cup, given to the chapter that best
excels in religious, ethical, and social ser
vices. Additionally, our Purple Legion
naire Jere Morehead followed up his Durrance Award win from last year with a From left to Right: Jere Morehead, Colin Newberry ('05), Ryan Irvine
second place showing this year. Addi ('04), Bill Bracewell, Dan Ludlam ('04), Section Chief Tom Adams, Jona
tionally we earned a third place finish for than Roberts('04), James Derrick ('05), Executive Director Bill Martin
the Brightman Award, given to the chap
ter that best represents that Phi Gamma Delta is "not for College Days alone." Lastly, in the Jordan Bowl,
awarded to the chapter with the highest comparative scholarship in the country. Kappa Deuteron earned an
honorable mention after placing first among all IFC fraternities for the 2002-2003 school year with a 3.25 grade
point average. Combine these awards with the Foundation for the Future fundraising project, a highly success
ful rush pledge class and pledgeship, planning and fundraising for our Run for the Kids charity event with the
Georgia Tech chapter, football games, date nights, socials, and, of course, school work, and things are going
non stop back here at 3 Cloverhurst Court. International Headquarters' Executive Director Bill Martin best
summarized the accomplishments of Kappa Deuteron when he said; "The successes that earned these awards
occurred in 2002, but the foundation for these accomplishments were set many years ago."

\r\nWith the close of Formal Rush midway through August, Cloverhurst Court was happy to have already
wrapped up one of the most productive rush summers in its recent history. Through the diligent work of Rush
Chairman Matt Moore,30 men accepted their invitations of pledgeship into Phi Gamma Delta.
The success of this year's class relied on numerous different aspects of rush. First and foremost was the
commitment of the brotherhood to submit names and go out of their way to meet rushees. This was made easy
with such summer rush events as band parties, dinners, rafting trips down the Ocoee River, and numerous
lunches with rushees during the summer orientation program. Additionally, the support from graduate brothers

this year far exceeded that of the past. Whether it was the numerous names submitted to the rush committee,
either by phone or the Rush form on our new website, www.uga.edu/fiji, made it easy to select men who were
truly a cut above.
With so many quality rushees submitted. Kappa Deuteron was able to pledge one of its largest pledge
classes in recent years. With a GPa of nearly 3.8 and an average SAT of 1270 the Kappa Tetratons look des
tined to continue Kappa Deuteron's academic tradition. With state champions in a wide variety of sports, from
wrestling to cross country, our new pledges prove that Academics and Athletics can, and should go hand in
hand. Lastly, with so many of these pledges already following in the older brothers' footsteps of Dance Mara
thon, Student Government, Relay for Life, it appears that the Kappa Tetraton Pledge class truly belongs in .TTie'
Cheney jCup Chapter.
\r\nFOUNDATION FOR
THE FUTURE
Fundraising Update
After months of planning. The Foundation for the Future Campaign is underway. The Executive Committee
has made sure that this campaign is executed in the most efficient and productive way possible. Now the me
ticulous planning is beginning to see some return. After numerous personal meetings and a few group gather
ings, we have secured our initial commitments.
A total of 29 graduates have committed $474,500.00 towards the goal of $1,000,000!!
How vou can you help?
•
Make a meaningful commitment BEFORE December 1, 2003 payable over 3 calendar years, beginning in
December 2003.
• Team up with your close friends and sponsor a small group gathering where a member of the Executive
Committee will be present to inform and answer questions. This would be an excellent opportunity for pledge
brothers to come together to claim a naming opportunity in either their names or in memory of a deceased
brother.
"Finish the Drill"
We have our initial commitments and the campaign has almost reached the halfway point. Now we need to
"FINISH THE DRILL"! The Executive Committee cannot raise this money on its efforts alone. WE NEED
EVERYONE TO DO THEIR PART TO HELP FINISH THE DRILL!!! Commitments are needed by De
cember I, 2003. We only have 2 I/2 months remaining,so TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. In January, 2004,
we will need to sign the contracts with the architects so that construction can commence by the end of spring
semester(May, 2004). In addition, by January 1, 2004, Charlie Conboy, Campaign Chairman, will cease to
serve as a full time paid volunteer.
If you would like a brochure detailing the project, please contact Charlie Conboy at
cconbov@hot mai I.com ,or 770 823-4095. Charlie will be glad to answer any questions you may have.
Finally, please come by the fraternity house before/after each home football game where you can meet with
Charlie Conboy or a member of the Executive Committee, pick up a brochure and make a commitment.
In closing, please help "Finish the Drill" and ensure that we can lay a strong Foundation for the Future for
Phi Gamma Delta in Athens!
Fraternally,

GAVEL REPORT
By Dan Ludlum '04
Brothers,
I am extremely proud to
give my second and final report at a
time when chapter tone has never
been higher. It has been a sincere
privilege to serve our fraternity
when there are so many brothers
working hard to make it continu
ously successful. When my current
term as President kicked off with a
great spring pledge class, a Kappa
Deuteron SGA President, Arch So
ciety Chairman, and Dance Mara
UGA Dance Marathon. The con
stants that have made Kappa Deu
teron great year after year have
been Purple Legionnaire Dr. Jere
Morehead and IHQ Educational
Director Bill Bracewell. Dr. Morehead earned Second Place in the
Durrance competition this year
even after winning the award just
last year. Brother Bracewell con
tinues to help us improve upon our
pledge program with his insight and
assistance. He helped bring
serving Kappa Deuteron. As the
Purple Machine rolled into summer.
Brother Matt Moore stepped in as
Rush Chairman to lead an ex
tremely successful rush process.
Again, without graduate support,
none of this would have been possi
ble as a great number of rush candi
dates came from your response to
our requests for names. His hard
work, with the guidance of last
year's Rush Chairman and current

merous accolades that International Headquarters has be
stowed upon our chapter, it is easy to forget what Kappa Deuteron does that is so special. Every year the University of
Georgia's Dance Marathon raises near $200,000 for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This success would not
be possible without the leadership of Kappa Deuteron's active brothers, and the financial support from its
graduate ones. With so many brothers contributing to its success. Dance Marathon has become as much of part
of Kappa Deuteron as Kappa Deuteron a part of Dance Marathon. This upcoming November 28th we will
once again be running the GA-GA Tech game ball, along with the brothers from the Georgia Tech chapter be
fore our annual game. Please show your support for your out of shape actives as well as"For The Kids" by
continuing to contribute to what will surely be another successful year for Kappa Deuteron's Run for the Kids.
Sincerely,
Ryan Irvine

\r\n^ EDITOR'S NOTE
Returning for my second term as editor of FijiUGA brought back memories of my first go around
with this esteemed publication. Once again I wrote about the same news that I am sure that you are
used to reading—another spectacular pledge class, a great philanthropy, and the recognitions of our
international headquarters to top it all off. Once again Richt's Bulldogs are making another mn at the
SEC championship. And once again the brothers are receiving tremendous support from our gradu
ate brothers. At a recent Foundation fundraiser I was asked to attend, I listened as you, the graduates,
talked about your experiences with this fratemity. I am delighted by the similarities that we shared
concerning this place, and I became anxious to reap the benefits of best men,co-workers, and future
wives so many of you said you were blessed with because of your experiences with Kappa Deuteron.
I also realized that the chapter was blessed in another regard. While so many of you shared the feel
ings for 3 Cloverhurst Court that are still around today, few of you had the support of dedicated
graduates reminding you of what we are experiencing, and what we will be missing. It is my hope
that all of you reading this will take a moment to reflect upon your time here. We have not taken for
granted the foundation that was built here at Georgia some 36 years ago, and we are ensuring that
those replacing us are instilled with that same appreciation.
Sincerely,
Colin Newberry
