Bang-up calendar in spring semester
by Rettig Talbot
One of our many goals this year at
Zeta is to win the national fraternity
award for graduate relations, the
Brightman Cup. Striving for this
honor,
this
semester's
Graduate
Relations Committee is planning a
bang-up calendar in order to prove
that "Phi Gamma Delta is not for col
lege days alone."
In March, the focus was on the
traditional Norris Pig Dinner, March

1. On the same weekend, we had the
class of 1969 reunion. We realized
this was their 11th year, but due to
calendar conflicts last semester we
were unable to get them back. In order
to catch up on our ten year reunion
schedule, we plan to have the reunion
of the class of 1970 in the fall, hope
fully in connection with the annual
Homecoming Oktoberfest. We will
then have the class of 1971 return
to Zeta in the manner in which we had
this year's reunion—on the same
weekend as Pig Dinner.
This will set us straight and
begin a tradition of ten-year reunions
in connection with Pig Dinner.
This semester we are also cleaning
up our back-log of 50-year Gold Owl

nicer with the new "Big Screen."
Bill Martin at national headquarters
in Lexington, we are now able to cor
rectly determine the proper recipients
by initiation date. Bill ran a computer
search for us and compiled a list of
initiation dates which will hold us for
at least five years.
Then we'll be off to the 10th Street
Stadium for the big event.
Communication with all of you is
the most important factor in relations.
Please, if you have any address
changes, send them to us so we can
correct our mailing lists and assure
you of receiving letters, invitations,

President's Message
The 1979 fall semester was very
rewarding for the brothers at Beechwood. We are trying to maintain the
excellent records that were estab
lished by our graduate brothers by
doing well in each of our main empha
sis areas. The dedication and hard
work of all the undergraduate bro
thers can and will achieve our goals
for the rest of the year.

The chapter realizes this will not be

Fiji activities abound
by Craig Fuson
Beechwood has gone through quite
a few physical changes in the past
I.U. Sing
The 1980 I.U. Sing was a huge success as the men of Beechwood teamed with
the women of Sigma Delta Tau sorority to present the best show Zeta has seen
in recent years.
With the theme"Escape to Reality,"rehearsals started early in January under
the direction of Brent Dunn, Kyle Grayson, and Cathy Lee. They lasted until
the night before the show.
Intramurals
As of February 15, Fiji stands third
Remodeling
overall in IMs, and the prospects
for moving up in the standings are good, say co-chairmen Don McMahon
and Jeff Moheban.
All the house basketball teams with the exception of the pledge team are un
defeated at the present time. McMahon says the A-team has a "real good shot at
winning all-campus."
After the conclusion of the basketball season in March, soccer, tennis
doubles, track and softball will round out this year's IM schedule. Zeta is
going for its sixth consecutive all-campus IM championship.
Rush
Sophomores John Douglas and Mac Tripp are serving as co-chairmen
of this year's rush committee. The never-ending process of finding new blood
to carry on the great tradition of Phi Gamma Delta here at Zeta is always active.
There will be three rush weekends; March 15-16, April 5-6, and April 19-20.
If alumni know of any potential Fiji's who are currently high school seniors,
please send their names and addresses.
Scholarship
Forty-seven brothers ate steak at the Scholarship Dinner on February 11.
To qualify, each had to have a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Greg Nichol
son,'82, had the highest G.F.A.in the house at 4.0. Perry Fogelson,'81, received
the steak and lobster dinner awarded to the brother with the most improved
grades.
In order to improve study conditions, several changes were made in the
library. New carpet was laid, a new clock was purchased, and a campus activi
ties board was displayed on the wall. All this was financed from the $500 Zeta
received for winning the Jordan Bowl last year.
Baker Cup
Zcta's Baker Cup chairmen have been busy recently, planning service activi
ties for this semester.
Plans include working with the Bloomington Christian Center, to help in
home restoration and repair for elderly people and shut-ins. We will also be
helping the YMCA with a six-mile and a one-mile kiddie run tentatively sched
uled for April. Also planned is a song-and-refreshment hour to be presented
at three local nursing homes. We plan to enlist the aid of a sorority to make the
few years.
This semester, under house man
ager David Pauley, Zeta has im
proved its outward appearance re
markably. 'Zeke' has just completed
leading the freshman class in its
freshman project. The weekend pro
ject saw the class thoroughly clean
ing the house, along with doing the
painting in the diping room.
The ladies powder room has been
totally refurbished, along with the
new paint on the wall. The powder
room and the library have also been
recarpeted this month.
Among some of the comforts of
home
that
the
brothers
of Zeta
are growing accustomed to is the
new big screen television that
now sits in the tube room. Many
brothers enjoy the comforts that have
been provided for them through the
generosity ofthe Mom's and Dad's
Club, as well as the House Corpora
tion.
The Dad's Club money which was
collected at the annual Dad's week
end, went towards buying a used
pool table, which is now in the tube
room. That money also provided the
necessary funds for a three-station
Universal Weight Machine.
The floors of the Fiji room and
front foyer have been recovered.
They now display slate-like linoleum,
which gives those rooms an extra
sparkle.
