Profile
Lewis Deans ’03
2002 UNC Greek Leader of
the Year Offers Sage Advice
“If there is one thing I would like undergraduate brothers to remember, it is that
we have a wonderful house that has been rebuilt, and we should not take that
for granted.” These words from Lewis Deans ’03 can be a reminder to actives as
well as graduate brothers of the burning of the house seven years ago. Even
though it was a tragic event, Deans sees how it has pulled many classes together.
“The Class of ‘03 was the last class to be with those who actually experienced the
fire. We need to pass down memories even if they are adversities.”
As this senior from Farmville, N.C., prepares for a May ’03 graduation, he is
quick to remember the good times, as well. “Fiji Island during my freshman year
was the best,” he recalled. “It was nice to get back together as a pledge class. And
as we slid down the slide into the house, we just knew that this was something
we would remember for a long time.” Deans is very proud to have shared these
memories with pledge brothers and good friends Rusty Byrd ‘03, Wood Sarless
‘03 and Chris Calloway ‘03.
Dean’s list of Phi Gam credentials is quite impressive. In addition to being
named the university’s Greek Leader of the Year in 2002, he adds to the list his
achievements as house rush chair, social chair and historian as well as his roles as
IFC president, vice president, social vice president, house representative and
executive board member.
And having seen a significant amount of leadership experience in both Phi
Gam and general Greek initiatives, he is excited about improvement programs
he has helped develop and implement. “Right now, I am working on the
Chancellor’s Committee on Greek Affairs,” he said. “This is a hand-selected
committee of faculty, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Visitors, alumni advisors, the Parents’ Council and students. We are working to put forth a proposal
to the Board of Trustees to restructure rush and pledge programs. We want to
take some of the pressure off freshmen in their first few weeks of school.”
Anxiously looking ahead to a summer business program, Carolina Business
Initiatives at the Chapel Hill Business School, and a possible career in real estate,
Deans encourages all brothers, active and graduate, to play some part in the
continuing traditions of Phi Gamma Delta. To undergraduates, he says, “Take
advantage of the many opportunities you have to serve on so many levels. You
don’t have to be president, vice president or even treasurer to share in the
responsibility and have a great time.” And, to the graduate brothers, the advice is
very similar. “It is so easy for you to come back and be an active part without it
becoming a burden. Remember, it is really through you that the undergraduates
know the history of Phi Gam.”
Best wishes to Lewis Deans as he graduates from UNC and moves forward
into what we know will be a successful future!

Report
An Outstanding
Year at Phi Gam
The brothers listed at right value the
relationships they developed through
Phi Gam and want to keep track of old
friends and our chapter’s progress. They
care about the place they called home at
the University of North Carolina and
where they will always be welcome
visitors. They have a stake in the
ongoing process of creating the next
generation of young leaders, and by
writing a check to our 2002-03 Annual
Fund, they have shown that they believe
these things are important. Also, they
fund graduate communications, including this newsletter, our Web site,
reunions, house events and maintaining
contact information for nearly 800
living Phi Gam graduates.
We reach out to those
who have not been
involved and invite
them to participate.
To date, 135 brothers made gifts of
$10,490. It is gratifying to see 68 new
donors and 16 increase their giving this
year. However, we still hope to hear
from those we have not heard from this
academic year. We reach out to those
who have not been involved and invite
them to participate.
A strong organization is the foundation for a healthy undergraduate
chapter—a place where leadership
develops and lifelong bonds are forged.
Our donors are grateful for what the
fraternity did for them and wish to pass
on to those that follow the experiences
and benefits of Phi Gam at UNC.
A fraternity is an association of
men, selected in their college days by
democratic processes, because of
their adherence to common ideals
and aspirations. Out of their
association arises a personal relation
which makes them unselfishly seek
to advance one another in the arts of
life and to add, to the formal
instruction of the college curriculum,
the culture and character which men
acquire by contact with great
personalities, or when admitted to
partnership in great traditions. —

By Graham Edward Farless ’04,
Chapter President
A Full House Serving the
Community
All is well in Chapel Hill as the brothers of Epsilon enter their second semester of
the school year. With the beginning of the new year came the installation of new
officers to the cabinet. The undergraduate brothers of Epsilon would like to thank
the old cabinet for their dedicated service to the fraternity. The new leadership is
eager to fill their shoes and continue Phi Gam’s tradition of being the best fraternity
on campus. This past fall, Epsilon was proud to induct 12 new initiates into its
brotherhood.
This year’s pledge class contained within its ranks two legacies, John Dixon
Fleming III who is the son of John Dixon Fleming, Jr. ‘76, and Wilson Hanley
Weed who is the son of Frank Charles Weed ‘70. With the addition of these
initiates, the current undergraduate membership of Epsilon stands at 57 brothers.
We are also pleased to announce that for yet another semester, our chapter’s cumulative grade point average is above the all-male average at UNC. Our membership
numbers as well as our academic standing are very strong compared with other
fraternities on campus, so it need not be said that our chapter is carrying on the
tradition of excellence that has been a hallmark of Epsilon for more than 150 years.
Vance Hall is in great condition as it enters the second semester of its fourth
year since it’s reopening in 1999. Currently, it is at its full capacity with 27 brothers
living in the house. One of the new objectives of Epsilon and the Greek community
is a renewed focus on service to the community. We are proud to announce that our
own Breck Gibbs ’04 is the IFC chairman responsible for leading the Greek
community’s spring initiative to build a Habitat For Humanity house. Throughout
the spring semester, UNC Greeks will raise $25,000 and will provide all of the manhours to build the house. Phi Gamma Delta is committed to helping see this project
through by not only raising part of the money but also providing labor for several
weekends on site at the Habitat house. Please be sure to put this year’s Pig Dinner
date on your calendar. We look forward to seeing all of you at the Angus Barn.
