Update on the Proposed Acquisition
of Beechwoodfor Law School Expansion
Negotiations are continuing with the University on the acquisition ofour
property. The University appraised the land and building at $750,000. The
unresolved issue is what it would cost to replace our existingfacility, ifwe are
required to relocate.
At our last meeting, on April 12th, we interviewedfive architectualfirms
in an attempt to gather some preliminary information. We have hired James
and Associates to complete afeasibility study to identify what the replace
ment costs would be. The costfor this study will be approximately $3,500.
Wefeel we will need this information to negotiate properly.
It appears that the Law School expansion project, the research for the
proposed acquisition, will receive approvalfrom the Legislaturefor 5.5 mil
lion dollars infunding. It has passed through the House and is currently in
the Senate Finance Committee.
No decisions have been made on this entire issue. Your House Corpora
tion is merely "doing it's homework"so we will be able to negotiate with
facts, rather than speculation. We'IIkeep you allinformed assoon as we have
any new information.

Pig Dinner
Despite a smaller turnout than in
previous years, Zeta's 11th Pig
Dinner was a success. The feast, held
on Saturday, March 7th, attracted
over 150 graduates and actives, as
well as Archon President Joseph

After a day of socializing and the
dinner itself, an evening convocation
was held in the living room. William

was toastmaster for the
event, at which Zeta honored its out

Fijis Take Seventh Place in Little 50$
Zeta remains the #2 team in overall Little 500 qualifications(this year we
qualified 15th)and finishes. This year, because of three busted spokes and a
flat tire on the new faster track, Fiji finished seventh.
After two-time All-Star rider Kevin King gained the lead from the 15th
place start, he handed the bike to first-year rider (second year on the team)
Chip Helm. Chip led the race for several laps then on approximately the 45th
lap he came in with the flat tire.
Kevin King was unable to catch the fast-moving pack from so far back.
Then, after second-year rider Mark Effrein and first-year rider Matt Millikan traded sprint laps with Kevin and Chip the team decided to wait for the
pack.
Placing seventh was the highest finish possible after becoming one lap
down.
Both Perry Fogelsong and Kevin King won the annual Tyte award for the
most contributions to the bike team.
Congratulations to the entire team: Perry, Kevin, Mark,Chip, Matt,Kyle

President's Message
The 1980-81 schoolyear closed, and with it came the end ofanother year of
successesfor the pages of Zeta Chapter's history book. The undergraduate
brothers are still maintaining the standard ofexcellence that is and always
will be a tradition here.
We initiated 22 pledges in February, a superior class that contributed
much to the house this past year. In intramurals, they were the backbone of
the house's second place overallfinish. They won pledge league champion
ships in bothfootball and volleyball, and placed second in basketball. They
have recently completed theirfreshman project, and are doing an outstand
ingjob helping with Zeta's rush activities.

in the rush program to make it more enjoyablefor both the rushees and the
Phi Gam brothers. At thispoint, we have extended30 bids, and nearly halfof
those have already been returned.
Scholastically, we are still maintaining our long tradition ofquality work.
Last semester, Zeta exceeded the lU all-men's grade point averagefor the
42nd semester in a row. For that semester we also placed third among lU
fraternities with a house grade point average of 2.93.

concerning the proposed acquisition of our property by the university. The
House Corporation has been keeping an open mind on the matter and is
actively dealing with the situation. The undergraduate chapter does not want
to leave Beechwood, but it is prepared to do so. Wefeel that we can keep up
the standard of excellence during the transition period if that situation
proves unavoidable. No matter the outcome, the graduate support will re
main as it always has been: strong.

Intramural Update

"Ain^t No Stoppin' Us Now"
Zeta once again demonstrated ver
satility with a strong showing in the
51st annual lU Sing, for which the
brothers from Beechwood paired with
Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
Although the theme of the sing was
"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now!", the
judges left the show scripts open for
interpretation. Our act traced the his
tory of the cinema from the viewpoint
of an industry documentary. The
show included excerpts from "Heat
Wave" and "The Sound of Music".
The act concluded with a scene from
the movie "Breaking Away", accom
panied by the popular Christopher
Cross song "Ride Like the Wind."

tion.
The pledges served as a main cog
in this year's program by winning
championships in volleyball and foot
ball, and placing in basketball.
Third Place Scholastic Rating
Keeps Zeta Well Above Average
For the fourth year in a row, the
Fiji "A" basketball team captured the
Crimson (large) fraternity champion
ship. Other Crimson championships
were gained by the doubles ping-pong
team of Brian Hedges '83 and Jim
Holland '84 and by the "B" softball
team.
Next fall, the Fijis promise to return
ready to do all that is necessary to re
capture the intramural trophy it has
won five out of the last seven years.
Zeta finished third among lU fra
ternities in house scholarship last
semester, slipping slightly from the
first place slot it occupied the semester
before.
Fiji achieved an overall grade aver
age of 2.93, well above the university
all-men's average. In January, over 50
brothers ate steak—the reward Jor
CPA's over 3.0—at the Scholarship
Dinner.
Three brothers, Don Behrmann '82,
Greg Nicholson '82 and Scott Gude-
man '84 had perfect 4.0's, and thus
were awarded lobster tails in addition
to their steak. Brian Davis '82 also ate
steak and lobster for improving his
CPA by the largest margin over the
course of a semester.
Zeta is currently wrapping up its
22nd year above the university allmen's average, tops for chapters of the
international fraternity.
Philanthropies Put Fiji In Line For Baker Cup
ruary,
Zeta enjoyed a fine semester in the
area of social service, and is hoping to
finish highly in this year's Baker Cup
race.
The semester got off to a good start
when the entire house participated in
a miss-a-meal, donating the $100 the
meal would have cost to the Bloom-
ington United Way. In early Feb-
the
Student
Recreational
Sports Association sponsored the
Spirit of Sport All-Nighter, a fund
raiser competition against the SAE's
and the Sigma Nu's, Fiji raised over
200 dollars in nickels, and was 1600
nickels ahead of the 2nd place
finisher.
Later that month, about 30 broth
ers donated their lU basketball tickets
to the local Boy's Club, giving many
youngsters their only chance to see the
NCAA champion Hoosiers in action.
On April 11 and 12, many brothers
did odd jobs for senior citizens around
the Bloomington area.
These endeavors, added to our first
semester projects, leave us eagerly
anticipating our highest Baker Cup
finish ever!
