FIJIS AT CAL CELEBRATE 100th
The Fijis started in 1881 as the Gamma chapter
with a handful of young, strong and ambitious fellows.
They wanted to be part of the upward march to broth
erhood and to achieve success. Things haven't
changed much over the years. The chapter name
changed to Delta Xi in 1886 but that same strength and
ambition lives on. To celebrate this momentous occa
sion, the Pig Dinner will be the best ever as it is high
lighted by a PRE-PIG golf tournament. We are
expecting a very large turn out and hopethatall will be
able to attend.
I would like to relate to all the Fijis around the
world, the pride we hold in originating the Pig and
Winter 1981
consisted in bringing on the platform a barrel labeled
"U. of 0. Glee Club," tied with a cord illustrating the
hold established by the two houses. Out of the barrel,
to complete the picture, came a squealing pig. That
night the pig was incarcerated in the lower regions of
the Fiji House on Dana Street (no. Art Bell is not quite
that old) while Frank Norris staged an elaborate
ceremony worthy of the burnt offering. On May 18 at 6
p.m., twenty Fijis gathered at the table and chanted "All
hail the pig!" At the break of dawn, after enjoying
themselves immensely, Frank Norris proposed the
perpetuation of a perennial alumni-chapter pig dinner.
In this same light, 60 years later, four illustrious Phi

Academics
'Fijis in academics', formerly a paradox in terms,
has now become a familiar phrase at the University of
California.
As a rule. Phi Gams at Cal are not known as
academic over-achievers. Our reputation is founded
more along the lines of power house athletics and
raucous partying. The house CPA usually hovered
around 2.4-2.5, never placing us above 27th of 35 with
respect to other fraternities.
The most recent publication of house CPAs
shows, however, that the Fijis have more than oatmeal
for brains. We now sport a house grade point average
of 2.96, and are ranked 5th (fifth) among the other 35
houses: a leap of 22 places in one year.
President's Address
Dear Brothers,
In my first presidential report of the year I would
like to say that things are going well at the Fiji house
here in Berkeley. I would like to congratulate the new
cabinet as well as thank the past one for a job well
Although there are several factors that contribute
to this quantum leap, the most important is the
done. I feel this new cabinet has the ability to get the
changed attitude the brothers have taken towards
school. No longer are the Fijis the 'happy-go-luckycome-what-may' students of the past. The Phi Gam of

with his academic performance, and is making
definitive goals for his future.
The Fiji House presently holds 37 live-in members
and has 8live-outs. Live-in housing could be a problem
next year because we are only graduating 3 live-in
seniors this year. As you can see we have a young
house which will make us very strong next year.

INFORMAL RUSH is coming to a close as we are
rounding up a few good men for our Spring pledge
class. We are in the process of extending bids and
would now like to take the time to thank all the people
who sent recommendations. They are very much
appreciated and we encourage them from our Gradu
ate Brothers. There area lot of boys'clubs but only one
Fraternity.
Pat Doyle has recently been elected to the ASUC
Senate at Berkeley, trying to get some respectability
back into the student government. Elsewhere, John
Winans, our Washington and Lee transfer, and Marc
Cagigas are attempting to build a powerhouse out of
the Cal Lacrosse Team, while Dave Clark and Jeff
McDermott are leading the way for Cal's Rugby Club to
capture their second National Championship. Randy
Thomas is fighting for a spot on the first boat and a
chance to go to Henley with the infamous Cal Grew,
while our new initiate Kurt Whiteman is expected to
start for the Football Bears in the Fall.
These are just a few of the organizations in which
we are involved and we are constantly reaching for
new opportunities. If you have any stories, come on by
and tell them, we'd love to listen.
FIJI INTRAMURALS
Cnce again this past year the Fl JIS fielded some of
the most dominant teams ever drawn together on this
campus. Cur athletic teams clearly showed our all
around effectiveness, ahd this past year we succeeded
in capturing the IFC Ail-Around Sports Trophy for the
second consecutive year.
Last spring's undefeated IFC and A League
Intramural Softball team captured the title handily in
both leagues. We won the IFC Championship game by
Page 3
This past football season marked the emergence
of Locky The Plaid as the bombing signalcaller of Fiji
Football. With our usual effectiveness we blew out our
opponents during the regular season, showing them
why it's not fun to play the FIJIS. Unfortunately, we
were unable to live up to the achievements of the 1976
and 1979 Championship teams. It took a last second
desperation bomb in the semis of A League to keep us
out of the finals, and in IFC semis were edged out in a
0-0 tiebreaker. All in all, FIJI Football was a worthwhile
effort, and championship looms for 1981.
Street Hockey this fall marked the emergence of
the return of the once great FIJI squad. It was a rebuild
ing year, and with such ex-Hockey stars as Wiwang
and Cheese, the future looks bright. As of the printing
date, our Basketballers are in the semis of A League
and look to be a dominating force on the court this
year. With Clark, Bubba, Buckley, Huey, and Portaire,
it looks like we could compete with anybody. All in all,
Intramurals has proved to be a good time for all. Even
our Horned Cwls and Inverted Dribblers, who always
seem to play their own kind of ball when they
remember what sport they are playing, have
experienced success in their own fashion. Under
Intramural Chairman Jason, all Fijis are experiencing
the thrill of playing, parties, both pre- and post-game,
no doubt play a factor in the rise and continued
success of FIJI Intramurals.
Little Sisters
The Delta Xi Little Sisters Program is in its typi
cally strong shape. Cur rush went well and we ended
up with approximately 100 of the finest young ladies
the University of California has to offer. We have had
several incredible encounters with these girls, capped
off by the Winnebago trip down to the USC football
game. There were several casualties on the trip, but
nothing compared to what we expect to see this wee
kend, during our Lake Tahoe Skifari. Tensions are
running high with great expectations for this snow
bound fun fest. As usual, the girls will be providing
food and kitchen help while we'll beholding upourend

House Manager's Report
As House Manager in conjunction with Brother
Pete "Woody" Neville, I'm glad to reporttothe Phi Gam
community that I have struck on a weekly work crew
system to maintain our house. The system is operated
three times a week(M WF)with the hashing crew work
ing every dinner. The housework is divided into six
major areas: hashing,commons,vacuuming, bar, out
side and bathrooms. The live-in Brothers are divided
into six crews with a senior member as a crew head.

They're almost as ugly as we are!
As the sun rises over the Berkeley hills and beams through the Golden Gate, the
Fijis of the Delta Xi chapter look to broaden their horizons beyond the house and the
campus at Cal. With the help of Graduate Brothers this can be accomplished. You
need not be a Delta Xi. I would appreciate correspondence from the highest Archon
to the most recently inducted chapter. My great enthusiasm stems from thefactthat
I have recently taken my pen in hand as the new corresponding Sec. and I hope this
enthusiasm will generate more Graduate participation in the House. Due to the rise
of costs in the past year, the Morris Fiji has been unavailable. However, with Rea
gan's new economic plan, we have ample funds to print this literary wonder. I know
the support is there; now let's bring it to the surface and make this the strongest
chapter in the world. With your support it's possible."Not For College Days Alone."

Fijis in Battle—Enemy Defeats Many
The annual Fiji Military Brawl was this past Janu
ary, as a full squadron of determined Fijis and their
dates persevered through one of the most momentous
Brawls of recent history. Continuing a tradition that
was'started by some of the earlier Phi Gams of this
chapter. After a pre-battle strategy at Manuals, the
local watering hole, we marched back to the battlefront
determined to defeat the enemy at hand. However,
luck was not on the Fijis side this night, as many girls
and even a few unsuspecting Fijis fell and were
defeated by the enemy. The casualties were heavy, yet
the enjoyment outweighed the losses. It was overheard
later that the boys had never performed so well in the
heat of combat. In the end some had been defeated,
and some had won their own combat battles, and the-
enemy was defeated. Needless to say, the Military
Brawl was a definite success, and with rehabilitation
now completed, we are planning our assault for next
year's Brawl.
