1968 December Newsletter Upsilon Sigma (Utah State University)
DEDICATED TO THE GRADUATES OF UPSILON SIGMA
December 1968
Vol. I No. Ill
Another quarter is drawing to a close at Utah State. It has been a
challenging one for your chapter and we are looking forward to more of the
same. Winter has come to the great Cache Valley and with it tubing on Old
Main Hill and skiing at Beaver Mountain. The Christmas lights have been
strung downtown and everyone is anxiously anticipating vacation. At this time
your brothers at Upsilon Sigma want to wish you a very merry Christmas and the
best of luck in the coming year. If you are crossing the country during your
holiday travels please drop in on us. This is your chapter and you are always
welcome.
Response to the Graduate Bulletin has been greatly appreciated. All letters
are read carefully and posted for the chapter. Please feel free to make any
comments you wish about the Bulletin and suggestions will receive the utmost
consideration. Drop us a line and let us know how you are doing. If you have
a new or temporary address please let us know. This is extremely important
in order to keep our graduate file up to date.
Danny Romero was our welcome guest this
by the University of Arizona when they chose
Grand Marshal and outstanding alumnus of the
inspiration, needed advice, and an enchilada
month. Danny was recently honored
him as 1968 Homecoming Parade
year. Danny always gives us
dinner.
Our number has increased this month with the addition of Pat Fagen from
Bountiful and Mike Sullivan from Rochester, New York. This gives a total of
44 actives and pledges.
Once again it looks as if the Fijis will be running Greek Week. Roy Irwin
was chosen as Greek Week Chairman and four other Fijis are heading up the most
important committees: Alan Lichty, Swing Sing; Tom Maiello, Greek Games;
Bill Tennent, Philanthropy; and Dave Palumbo, College Bowl.
Thanksgiving brought not only a turkey to the Fiji house but also a pinball
machine compliments of the pledge class. For the present this new addition is
pre-empting the usual poker games and has even put our table top shuffleboard
(which we painted on our dining table) into retirement.
\r\nKarl Zufelt ^69 received the outstanding scholarship award for last spring.
Uncle Sam has inquired about Pube*s physical condition.
Mike Morrissey *70 is engaged to Kathy Bilton of Dugway, Utah. Kathy
was treated to a rendition of "Fiji Girl*' by the brothers and thus a new
tradition has been added to the chapter.
Our bowling team is still undefeated. It consists of Roy Irwin, Dave
Bergener, Tom Maiello, and Sandy Chase. The basketball team is not in the
same category.
Mike Robinson took his weight division in wrestling.
The Spoi Odi with the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon was held at the
American Legion Hall and the usual bath tub was very much in evidence. The
Black Diamond Formal will be held at the Old Mill in Ogden to top off our
fall social calendar.
Rick Mclnturff is the editor of Bachelor, the East High Rise newspaper,
which is the finest dorm publication on campus.
Jim Mackey was our first skiing casualty of the season. He stabbed
himself with his ski pole! Kurt Koetter has taken up the sport and actually
made it down the hill at Beaver Mountain nine times his first day out.
"Maverick** has replaced "Rawhide" as our pre-dinner culture.
The chapter has been giving things away as Baker Cup projects: a turkey
dinner at Thanksgiving to a widow with seven children, kitchen equipment to
the Cache Training Center, a Christmas present for our orphan child, and a
sled to a poor family for Christmas.
You can see that our year thus far has been an exciting and busy one.
We hope that it has been a good one for you and that we will be seeing some
of you soon. Stop in and try our pinball machine.
Fraternally,
Bill Tennent
