- - - - - - PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Brothers,
It gives me great pleasure to bring you up
to date on the status of your chapter here at
Allegheny College. The reorganization of Pi
Chapter of PHI GAMMA DELTA has begun!
A chapter retreat was held on February 9,
1985, at the David Mead Inn in Meadville,
Pennsylvania. This gathering was helpful in
defining and setting Pi Chapter's goals for
the coming year. The retreat was attended
by the following: Eugene D. "Buddy" Cote,
Director of Chapter Services;
Robert W.
Niebaum, Chief of Section 13;
Robert
Stanton, Chairman of Pi Chapter's Education Fund;
The Board of Trustees of Pi
Chapter; Numerous concerned graduate
brothers;
Undergraduate brothers and
pledges of Pi Chapter.

be trained in alcohol awareness. They in
turn will educate the fraternity through their
training. This group will also be responsible
for providing seminars and/ or speakers
from a national or local organization on
alcohol abuse and awareness. Through this
committee and the adoption of a new
alcohol policy, we hope to avoid any
alcohol-related incidents in our future.

At the retreat the following issues were
discussed:
1. Public Relations - With campus and
community.
2. Alcohol - Chapter's approach to its use
and abuse.
3. Rush - Goals and procedure.
4. Pledge Education - Re-evaluation of
current program.
In addition to this, new officers were
elected, and are as follows:
President - VINCENT J. CRISWELL '86, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Treasurer - DONALD TRACE '86, Saegertown, Pennsylvania.
Assistant Treasurer - CHRISTOPHER MANDELLA '87, North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
Corresponding Secretary - MARK BONESS! '86, Washington, Pennsylvania.
Historian - JOHN SUSNAK '86, Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
The new officers and the entire chapter
will operate under the guidance of our new
Purple Legionnaire Ben Miceli.
We are now in the process of formulating
policies for each of the above issues. All
policies will inevitably be installed into the
fraternities by laws and/ or used as guidelines in the chapter affairs.
One of our newest developments so far is
an "alcohol task force." This committee will
be comprised of underg raduates who will
TRUSTEE'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
Pi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta is up and
running. The process of evaluation and restructuring of the Chapter was less painful
than any of us had anticipated. In fact, we
have found the process to be a pleasant
one. This is due to the total cooperation
given us by the undergraduates.
main thrust was goal setting and election of
officers. The Chapter now has goals for the
Year and a super group ot leaders. The
weekend was an unquestioned success. As
corny as it may sound, the only regret was
that all Pi Chapter Graduates could not
have shared the experience with us.
We are working together with the active
brothers, the college administration, the
house corporation, and the graduate brothers. It is our opinion that Pi Chapter really
has to act together and is moving ahead in
an outstanding fashion.
We hope, and quite frankly, expect that
September 1985 will bring a celebration of
reopening a refurbished house for our 125th
anniversary. Of course, you will all be
welcome.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
Each undergraduate was asked to submit
a written response to questions and go
through an interview. This permitted us to
learn about the past activities of the Chapter
and evaluate each undergraduate. Five
Brothers elected not to go through the
process, and one Brother was kept on inactive status by us. We did not remove any
undergraduate from the Chapter as a result
of the "incident" during Fiji Island.
It has been reported to us that the College
has halted its investigation of the Fiji Island
"incident" with no formal report and no individual punishment.
We have an excellent group of undergraduates as demonstrated during our retreat weekend of February 9th and 10th. The
facilitator for the weekend was Buddy Cote
of the National. Also attending that retreat
were Chuck Reimer and members of the
House Corporation, Bob Stanton of the Educational Foundation, Warren Keck III,
Chairman of the newly established Board of
Chapter Advisors, the Trustees, ten other
Graduate Brothers, and Bob Niebaum, The
Once again brothers, Pi Chapter is still
financially sound. Because of our current
status, we have not had the funds coming
into our accounts but this has not posed a
problem as of yet. Presently, the treasurer of
the trustees Lou Phillips, has the books and is
performing all financial transactions that
have to be taken care of for Pi Chapter. I will
have received the books by the time this
article is read, and will take over the responsibilities of my office as treasurer.
At the present time, my position has been
similar to that of a vice president. Vince and
I, as well as the rest of the cabinet, have
been working hard to get Pi Chapter back
on its feet. On the weekend of February 23,
the whole cabinet traveled to Ohio State for
our annual regional fraternity meeting. As
could be expected, we gathered a lot of
good information and ideas that will be
very beneficial for Pi Chapter. Let's hope we
can keep moving forward in the right
direction.

\r\nFUND RAISING AND
PUBLIC SERVICE
Dear Brothers,
In accordance with the multiple activities
of Pi Chapter to regain our status as a highly
respected and top quality fraternity in the
eyes of our peers, the Fund Raising and
Public Service Committee has been hard at
work. We realize that a favorable public
image, both on campus and in the Meadville community, is crucial to our successful
comeback. A useful and productive method
to attain this image is through aiding worthy
charities and services in the Meadville area.
At the present time, several charities and
organizations are being contemplated for
our community projects. We plan not only a
rund raiser, but service-related projects as
well. The Salvation Army, United Cerebral
Palsy, and the March of Dimes are all worthy
charities that are under serious consideration. Additionally, the Special Olympics
Organization is an inviting option both for
our helping hands at the Olympics and in
raising money to make the Olympics a
success.

As for pledge education, our new program provides great opportunities for
brothers and pledges to grow together. The
emphasis is on scholarship, service, and
interaction with the brothers. Pledges are
instructed in the great tradition of our fraternity as well as the history of our own chapter.
The committee on pledge education is
working hard to secure a great program
that will teach the pledges to become contributing brothers.
A new rush committee has also been constructed. This committee is developing ways
to find freshmen who will bring admirable
qualities into our fraternity. We will be looking for young men with characteristics such
as leadership, academic excellence, and
enthusiasm.
Two other committees, public relations
and community service, have also been
established. The public relations committee
will focus on improving campus as well as
community relations. The community
service committee is responsible for Pi
Chapter's philanthropic events.

This is where we are today. Each of us is
taking part in a voluntary association. Colleges that have made the decision to encourage fraternities as an alternative to
leadership training and allowing man to
learn to live with man have alleged the
values which come from the individual students as well as the institution.
This is why we are working. Our chapter
house is closed but the fraternity and spirit of
brotherhood lives. The rewards our fraternity can give are abundant. Our fraternity
can hearten the purposes and goals of Allegheny College. More importantly, however,
each of us carries within ourselves our
friendship which is the greatest gift our
fraternity has to offer.

The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta will celebrate the 125th anniversary of Pi Chapter at
Allegheny College . .As undergraduate
chairman of the Anniversary Committee, it is
my responsibility to encourage all graduate
brothers to fully participate in this festive
occasion. The plans for this celebration are
in their beginning stages. Our anniversary
festival will be held during a home football
weekend in the fall. This turnout promises to
be the largest ever. Information regarding
this affair will be published at a later date.
.As undergraduate chairman, it is my plea to
you to help us make this a most memorable
event. Brothers, if you are interested in helping organize this celebration, please contact me at the following address:
In Phase II we will extend invitations to all
faculty members to either a) have individual meetings at the campus grill, orb) have
lunch with each separate department in the
school cafeteria. At thismeetingwewillcontinue building our relationship with the
faculty.
Overall, our goal is to improve relations
100% in all of the departments.
Although the plan has not yet been tested,
we feel that with full support of the brotherhood, it should be a success.

FACULTY RELATIONS
Dear Brothers,
In an effort to improve our relationship
with the faculty, the brothers of Pi Chapter
have formed a faculty relations committee
to attack the issue. By enhancing our relationship with the faculty, we should .improve our overall status here at Allegheny
College.
The committee came up with three
phases we should enter in improving our
status with the faculty.
In Phase I each brother will meet informally with at least three members of the
faculty. The purpose of the meeting is to
receive suggestions concerning the improvement of Pi Chapter in the eyes of the
faculty. With these reports we can then
determine which faculty members need a
change of heart concerning Pi Chapter.
PLEDGE EDUCATION
Dear Brothers,
The Pledge Education Committee of Pi
Chapter has been created to structure a
pledge program that will emphasize
scholarship and interaction amongst the
brothers. The committee members are concerned people - dedicated to creating a
program that will benefit both the pledges
and the brothers. We intend to see that our
pledge program offers the pledge every
opportunity possible in the pursuit of academic excellence at Allegheny College.
It is our belief that the fraternity can be the
foundation of successful, achievementoriented scholarship, and some of our initial
ideas reflect this: ( 1) Set up tutors within the
house so that the pledge has some place to
tum, at any time, when he is in need of help;
( 2) Develop a stronger big brother program
so that the pledge has someone to see when
he is in need of guidance; (3) Keeping a
close watch on every pledge's grades so
that no one is allowed to slip.
We are interested in any suggestions that
the graduate brothers might have. Please
make them out to :

HISTORIAN'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
History is being made at Pi Chapter. Our
recent retreat was a great event in that we
got a lot of old and new brothers together to
have an informal discussion of our ideals
and goals for the fraternity. It was a profitable day for Pi Chapter. A lot of our old
problems were discussed and initial planning was done to address these. Now it is up
to us to keep the progress moving. All the
brothers are getting involved in the rebuilding of our Chapter. Being a member of the
new cabinet, I believe we have a good
group with the experience our Treasurer
and President have from last year's officers
slate. The future of Pi Chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta is in the current brothers' hands and I
feel we can face the challenge . All we need
from you is the support and encouragement
to get through this difficult period.

PURPLE LEGIONNAIRE
The first meeting of the undergraduatePi Chapter-Allegheny College was held in a
"basement room " of the Pellitier Library.
Contrary to my expectations, the discussion
was positive and the brothers were determined to overcome the problems theywere
confronted with.
The new slate of officers had a firm grasp
of their job; and the cooperation of the
brothers gave definite indication that this
year will be one which undergraduate and
graduate brothers will take special pride in
being a Fiji of Pi Chapter at Allegheny.

\r\n- - - - - - - P I CHAPTER S P O R T S - - - - - - The 1984 Gator Football season recently •
passed as another sub .500 season. However, it was a season highlighted by some
fine individual Phi Garn efforts. These
efforts resulted in six Pi Chapter brothers
attaining All-Conference honors.
Highlighting Allegheny's premier
season in the North Coast .Athletic Conference was a first team all-conference
performance by Robert Fraser '85. Brother
Bob finished an outstanding career at
Allegheny by zeroing in on 108 tackled
opponents to garner a first team spot on
the All-Conference list for the third time in
his career.
Brother Marc Calderone ·85 once again
led Allegheny in interceptions with four.
Marc's savvy style of play also enabled
him to return these pilfered passes for over
90 yards and one touchdown, thus placing him 7th on Allegheny's offense in
yards gained. Marc is also a two-year
letterman on Allegheny's tennis squad.
Calderone
Fraser
Complementing ·Robert on defense was
Brother Chris Mandella '87. Chris led the
Gators in both solos and assists to finish as
the leading Gator tackler. Brother
Mandella's hard-nosed and intensive
play earned him an All-Conference
mention at the linebacker position.
Garnering All-Conference honors for
the Gators on offense were Brothers Tom
Lacey '86, Ron Olson '86, and Mark
Bonessi '86. These three brothers not only
enjoy rooming together, they enjoy performing on the gridiron together as well.
Lacey at guard, Olson at tackle, and
Bonessi at tight-end form the right side of
Allegheny's offensive line.
Tom is complemented by the strength of
Ron Olson. Ronnie has become one of the
strongest players on the team through a
tough off-season weight training program. Brother Olson also cites his recent
acquisition of a microwave oven as an
indication of his continued dedication to
the Gator Football program.
Olson
Brother Mark Bonessi ·86 lends agility to
this unit as he led all Gator receivers in
1.984 with 17 grabs for 261 yards and two
touchdowns. He is also able to block well
as he was named All-Conference in the
new NCAC.
Brothers Olson, Lacey, and Bonessi function well as a unit despite their contrasting
styles of play. Brother Lacey '86 joined the
tandem of Olson and Bonessi in August as
a converted fullback. His aggressive and
steady style of play earned Tom the nickname "the Hammer" as well as an AllConference mention.

all-new coaching staff this past fall .
Leading the Gators in 1985 will be
newly-appointed Tri-Captains Vince
Criswell '86, Mike Fisher '86, and Don
Trace '86, all brothers at Pi Chapter.
Other top returners for the Gators include kick return specialist Mark
Lamendola '86 and defensive lineman
Lex Winans '87. Mark Lamendola is also a
talented receiver as he hauled in fifteen
passes for over 200 yards and two touchdowns while Brother Winans is an
aggressive, gutsy player at the nose

WRESTLING
Up Close and
Personal with
Dan Goodrum ...
Wrestling is one of Allegheny's lesser
publicized intercollegiate sports despite
enjoying some highly successful seasons
in the last five years. This relative anonymity contributes to the difficulties facing a
Gator wrestler. One wrestler who trains
week in and week out without regret is
Dan Goodrum '86.
Brother Goodrum says he enjoys the
competition and the chance to become
better everyday. Dan also feels that the
wrestling season motivates himself to perform better academically.
Dan posted a 16-13-2 record for the
Gators in 1985 and barely missed qualifying for the National Tournament,
. placing 6th at the Eastern regional
tournament. Although Dan only racked
up a .548 winning percentage at 150-
158 lbs., most of his losses came at 158
where he was asked to help the injuryriddled weight class of 158.
Pi Chapter was able to field two intramural play football teams this past fall .
The Outlaws, consisting of Jay Clayton '85,
As Brother Goodrum pointed out, "The
most difficult point in my season was wrestling a heavier weight class than I usually
compete in."
Paskey '85, Steve Gavatorta '85, Mike
Mutkis '85, Ron Mumbray '85, and Ron
Repaskey '85, came away as the undefeated intramural champs.
Tom Piero '85, Josh Walters '85, Nate
When asked why he did it, Dan was
quick to point out, "I did it for the benefit of
the team."
Dan's most rewarding moment came
against the Gators most hated opponent:
Thiel College. Wrestling in front of an unusually large crowd, Dan pinned his
highly-rated opponent in a key bout.
When asked to describe how he felt, Dan
replied with a hint of satisfaction as he
simply said, "It felt great."
Dan's goals for 1986 include qualifying
for nationals and doing well in school. "I
don't want to sacrifice my academics."
Dan Goodrum . . . a winner.

NEWS-----------------
Dear Brothers:
Writing the Graduate News section of the
Pi Crust has always been one of the more
pleasant jobs associated with the Pi Crust.
Words alone can not describe the feelings I
have as I read the biographical information
returned to me after each edition of the Pi
Crust. Each questionnaire returned to me is
a testimony to the strength of Pi Chapter and
Phi Gamma Delta. Each questionnaire is a
story in itself. However, each shares the
theme of success in life. It makes an undergraduate proud to see such successes that
still remember their years at Allegheny and
the friends they made at Pi Chapter. The
quote, " ... not for college days alone," is
something every pledge learns, but your
letters and support put meaning behind the
words. For this I thank you and entreat you to
continue.

1985. He is involved in IEEE, ACM, and Eta
Kappa Nu. He remembers "When Stumpy's
dog saved our lives by barking at the fire in
his room. Beerbelly jumped out the second
floor window and was in a half-body cast for
the rest of the semester. You never saw a
bunch of Thetas clear out so fast - you
would have thought it was a fire alarm at
the co-ed dorm. Also, the fire chief accused
us of being radicals setting off bombs! My
fondest memory is squeezing Thetas." He
promises to get back to the house one of
these days as soon as he can convince his
wife to allow him. Come on Sally!
