ALPHA IOTA CHAPTER
FIJI FOOTBALLERS
By Kyle Elbert
When I started phoning the past FUl football players, I had my doubts about getting any dirty details from their
years of school here at Iowa State. My doubting their memory was the biggest mistake IVe made since my last math
test. These brothers remember their college days as a FUl and a footballer like it all happened yesterday. I heard a
few stories that Iwould liketo tell you all, but there are laws against printingthat kind of stuff.

brotherhood he experienced throughout the days and years of his
college career.
During the years Ron played for the Cyctones, he remembers the 1971 season when the 'Clones went 8-3 and
played in their first txjwl game. That year they went to the Sun Bowl where they lost to LSU. Ron told me that the
score of the game doesn't really matter, it was still agreat honor to play.
Ron remarked what it was like to be both a member of the Greek system and an athlete. His commented that
participating in both kept him very busy but he loved it and he felt he earned the respect he received from it.

John is currently living in Vermillion, South Dakota, where he is an assistant football coach at the University of
South Dakota. Also, John and his wife are currently expecting a babythat isdue thiscoming Spring.
John told me that he, too, was close to the other players on his team and feels that this is what he got most out
being a player. Along the same lines, ho remembers the brothers for their brotherhood and helping him adjust to
college life. He said their biggest help was in the area of grades. Because he was busy with football, they helped him
whenever they could.
One season John remembers was the '73 season when ISU went 4-7.
Even with the bad season, John told me
the FIJIs and the rest of the campus continued to support the team through the rough spots.
At the end of his senbr
year season, John was awarded the award for being the most inspirational player for that season. (Story continued on

Hats off to Roger Morgan and Mike O'Hare for the
job they did on rush! Their persistence and determination
enabled Alpha lota to open it's doors for twenty-four
very talented young men this fall.
With this energentic
group among us, we pushed house capacity to sixty-eight
members.
Also, many thanks go out to all the graduates
who sent in rush recommendations.
Even though we still have water sports in our
basement after hard rains, we do have some functioning
bathrooms now. During the summer, we repaired third
head and second old bathroom and they seem to be holding
up. We decided to do only half of the bathrooms at this
time so that we could spread out the financial burden,
which is being handled by the undergraduate chapter. The
other two bathrooms in the new section are set to be
fixed in the summer of '87.
Brothers, I could go on and on about the chapter

Kyle Elb)ert ('89) and I am your new editor-in-chief .
As
you may know, last year I was the production editor.
While occupying that position, the past editor, Steve
Walker ('88), taught me a lot.
With that knowledge and
my experience as a yearbook editor, I think I can bring
you a fairly good-looking and interesting Brainstorm.
You might be interested in knowing a little bit
about me.
I am presently a second-semester freshman

I am majoring in Pre-Business and

some money.

I have decided to change from three columns
to two columns of print.
In my opinion this looks a little
better and it is easier to read. The color (Purple-What

end in his pursuit of hisfootball dream.
On November 6, the State Board of Regents
unanimously upheld a decision by Iowa State officials to
suspend Braswell.
The appeal, which was to settle a
dispute between ISU's Athletic Department and Braswell,
was the first of its kind in morethan 20 years.
Braswell was suspended by ISU just prior to the
Clones season opener at Iowa on September 13 due to
violations concerning transportation from a former

assistant coach, credit for meals at an Ames restaurant
and assistance in obtaining a bank loan. These violations
were later ruled to have given Iowa State an advantage in
recruiting Braswell from Des Moines Area Community
College in Boone.
Prior to the Regents decision Braswell had attempted
unsuccessfully to reverse his suspension by bringing his
'^Ih an NCAA subcommittee on eligibility and an
NCAA appeals committee. Braswell had then obtained a
o County District Court injunction to rejoin the team,
but the action was stopped and struck down by the Iowa
Supreme Court the following week.
If Braswell were allowed to play, ISU would be facing
a number of possible penalties. Including forfeiture of Big
Eight televisbn revenues.
Braswell plans to fight this battle to the end.
Unfortunately the end of the season is almost here and the
future of Jeff in a Cyclone uniform look bleak.
