THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
VOL. 1 NO. 1 ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER FALL 1986
THE 124TH CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
What a great weekend September 26-28 was for all involved in
the Installation of the newest addition to Phi Gamma Delta.
The weekend started for the fifty-seven members of the
former Delta Colony with Formal Pledging Ceremonies Friday
night. Only to wear our White Stars for one night, until the day
we had all been waiting for. Saturday morning the Formal
Initiation began at the Masonic Flail in downtown Akron. After
the first two groups had been initiated a luncheon followed, with
the President of the Univ. of Akron speaking. Dr. William T.
Muse (TKE), along with Mayor Tom Sawyer proclaiming that;
September 27,1986, was Royal Purple FIJI Day for Akron, OH.
After the luncheon the last group was initiated followed by the
Installation of Chapter Officers. As all initiated Phi Gams know
what a great experience it is to witness the ritual for the first
time.
Early that same evening all newly initiated brothers and their
guests where transported by Lolly's Trollies of Cleveland,
(Peter Paul, K.S.U. '70) to Anthe's Restaurant (Jim Anthe,
O.S.U.'64)for the Formal Banquet. All of our parents were very
proud and also very impressed with our Fraternity, they never
thought Fraternity was like this. Then following the banquet we
held a Casino Night at the REA Express Depot in downtown
Akron for everyone to enjoy. Of course everyone had a great
time.
Sunday began with an Ecumenical Church Service at the
Gardner Student Center, followed by a delicious brunch.. All
left over food was donated to the Haven of Rest Mission as our

we can then — and only then — move them to motivation
through the chapter. At the present time bud has stressed that
we should look for the potential and not the polish In pledges,
another key to setting an example of excellence would be — as
Bud sayt — for the group to stress that an Incoming person
must have higher goals than that of the group. In other words In
order for a group such as us to maintain our goals and stay here
we must constantly be looking for the people who are better
than us. Bud related It to me as a type of "self Imposed standard"
that we have set as Phi Gam's. This Is the philosophy that our
since." It was from this base that Ralph agreed to be a part of our
colony, now a chapter, as the Purple legionnaire.
In an Interview with Ralph Updegraph, the concept of
tradition stood out as a recurrent theme. Ralph reflected upon
the Idea of having Fiji brothers transmit the knowledge doc
trines, customs, practices from generation to generation.
To accompUsh this transmission, Ralph stresses the need for
strong upperclassmen. We need these older men to lead the
younger ones to a more active fraternity experience. He also
emphasizes tlxe need forall brothers to be active In all phases of
college life; to have a well rounded chapter.

In staying with his theme Ralph expressed the need for more
concerned with the Individual and therefore the Individual will
be concerned with the group. When Bud was a pledge he said
traditional social graces. This Includes singing, hospitality and
a sense of chivalry. He would like to see more singing done by
that "you never found two Fiji's In the same class sitting away
from each other." This Is an excellent example of how by
the brothers at all events. He belleve's It's a way to teach us to
working with the group the Individual benefits.
We will set the example of excellence for the Incoming
pledges. We are looking for possible potential rather than the
polish of a person. It Is self-Imposed. So, let's go after It, we are
the only one's that can make It happen!
Many of us try to emulate Bud because he Is such a fine

live more socially with each other. In addition. He would like us
to have a parlorforglrlstowalt forthe men until they are ca I led.
Overall Ralph would like us to stand up for females and be polite
as possible to them at all times.
Ralph would like us to continue on current great pace at
accomplishing goals. He would like us to have more goals for he
belleve's that everyone must have long term goals.
In conclusion Ralph states, that we can "learn by living
together the ritual, history and tradition of Phi Gamma Delta."

HAPPENINGS
FALL RUSH
Rush, an important event for all Fiji chapters, has dominated
the limelight since the end of the last school year. Many of our
Founding Fathers will graduate this spring or some time next
year. We need to find quality men to replace those leaving.
chairs. Oh, we are still missing a few active brothers who were
invited up to a loge box by older women.
Therefore, it became our goal to find and to pledge twenty

freshman and sophomore men to fill the ranks.
Our Rush chairman, Scott Reese, masterfully organized a
host of events to attract possible pledges. On July 26 in
combination with Delta Gamma, we held a swimming party at
Marie Panetti's house. It was a great opportunity to introduce
some men and women to the fraternity and sorority life. With
about forty people in attendance, we swam and played a variety
of games.

coming more acquainted with them. We had forty - five men
show up for the event. Many left with a positive attitude about
fraternity iife and especially Fiji.
Later that week on September 11th, we held a pizza party at

ask additional questions about each other. Afterward, the thirty
rushies listened to an extremely impressive talk given by ex.
Arcon President Louis(Bud) Mangels, our House Corporation
President.
On our last rush event, fifteen rushies went to Cleveland on a
chartered bus to watch an Indians baseball game. The bus ride
gave us an opportunity to take a better look at them and them to
get a better look at Fiji. Everyone had a great time. The rushies,
to show how psyched they are about Phi Gamma Delta, went to
the upper deck of the stadium and spelled "Fiji" with the empty

Rounding the weekend out with the planting of a tree and a
reading of the inscription upon the stone to be placed in the
front lawn of tt.v,- chapter house.
We have come a long way in a short amount of time, and hope
to go a lot farther in the years to come as a premiere chapter in
The Fraternity of PHI GAMMA DELTA. We extend our greatest
thanks and appreciation to everyone for their support.
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
The Delta Colony has had a successful
probational period. Scholasticaiiy ranking __
among the top five of fraternities for three
consecutive semester's, placing among the
top five of ail Fraternity intramural sports, and
raising over $2,000.00for phiiinthropic organ
izations. These accomplishments have been a
direct results of our colonies motto to "never
give up".
Now that we have become a Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta we
must continually strive towards our goals. Currently, we are
working towards international awards. This means efficiency
throughout the Fraternities system. Documentation has been
an extensive portion of ourorganization. it has created a strong
foundation and will enable the longevity of our efficiency. We're
also hoping that graduate support will provide post expertise of
success and encouragement towards these awards. We believe
that the potential exists and it's only a matter of putting it to use
Chris & Tony Sporting Their Tuxedos
effectively. This effective usage of resources will not only be
topped by the Chapter administration, but the graduates who
will be advising.
The Colony has learned that success is a journey not a
destination, it will bethisjourney thatourfuture brothers will as
we did strive to be the best Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.

SUMMERTIME TRADITIONS
as a
Over the summer the guys in the house started a new tradition
that will be carried out in summers to come for all Fiji's staying
in Akron during the summer. This tradition starts Thursday
afternoon by bringing furniture from the house out onto the
front lawn. During the afternoon, we would study and then at
night we would celebrate that another week of school was over.
Usually, we would grill up some burgers and dogs -- then we
would just sit around and talk about everything that was going
on, while downing some beers and having fun with passers-by.
What a great tradition for the summertime-learning about your
brothers and having a great time.
FIJI ESCORT SERVICE
Because of the location of the Akron University campus, the
"Brad, are you sure this didn't hit the ground"
Fiji's got together to form an escort service. Any Akron
University student can call the house anytime day or night to
have a Fiji escort them wherever they want to go. The response
for this service has been overwhelming. By doing this, we are
taking great strides to ensure the safey of our fellow students.
And the brothers are meeting many girls and expanding their
"little black books".
THE FIRST TAILGATE PARTY
"Mark Burns and Jon
Workman perform for
a lawnfui of groupies."
On September 6th, the men of Phi Gamma Delta and the
women of Alpha Delta Pi opened up the Akron Zip football
season with a tailgate party. We gathered in the Rubber Bowl
parking lot to start the festivities. As the ACME/ZIP game got
under way there was a cloud of peanuts that covered the Fiji s
and the AD Pi's. The peanut fight was a sign that everyone was
glad to be back to school. I could hardly believe it, everyone was
so busy throwing peanuts and having fun that we missed the
first quarter of the game. By the time the game was over, the
Zips came away victorious, with a 35-7 win over Salem College;
and all Fiji's and ADP's were still delerious from all the fun. Only
to be continued back at the Fiji house.
