PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Another improved aspect of the
C h a p t e r w h i c h I am p r o u d of is the
1985-1986 Board of C h a p t e r A d v i s o r s .
Under president Jeff Waldon and
s e c r e t a r y J o n P a e k e r , t h e BCA h a s
a v e r a g e d two m e e t i n g s per q u a r t e r in
conjunction with the House Corporation.
L i n e s of c o m m u n i c a t i o n between the
graduates, undergraduates, and
headquarters s t a f f are much better than
they were even a year ago. Everybody is
aware of what everybody else is doing,
and the Chapter benefits greatly.
Looking ahead to the r e s t of the
school y e a r , Rho Alpha has spring rush
t o gear u p f o r , P i g D i n n e r , P a r e n t ' s
Weekend, and the infamous F i j i Islander
party. See elsewhere in the newsletter
for dates and information.
The C h a p t e r is a c t i v e l y t r y i n g to
improve its sorority relations, and our
"social chairman in the wings" Jonathan
J a c o b s h a s b e e n h a r d a t w o r k even
though he is still a pledge.
Much of the strength that the
u n d e r g r a d u a t e leaders d r a w f r o m can be
credited to House Corporation president
President Bob Dix and Purple
Legionnaire Danny Kallick.
By giving advice, encouragement, or
a s w i f t kick in the rear as they feel
necessary, these two Brothers have been
particularly instrumental in motivating
the u n d e r g r a d u a t e s to set and achieve
the many goals and o b j e c t i v e s of the
Chapter.
Bob Baney at h e a d q u a r t e r s is also a
good friend to the undergraduates, and
knows the concerns of our Chapter and
As I a p p r o a c h the m i d d l e of my term
as p r e s i d e n t , I f i n d myself both
looking behind at the things that Rho
Alpha has a c c o m p l i s h e d , and looking
forward to the things that await.
Our accomplishments since September
are many. Most importantly, we have six
men pledging this q u a r t e r . Given that a
m a j o r i t y of our "top" prospects from
fall quarter didn't make grades, six is
a d e c e n t n u m b e r . Of c o u r s e , r u s h is
still action item number one, two, and
-three on the Chapter's agenda.
Brothers, pledges, and little
s i s t e r s have b a n d e d t o g e t h e r to
generate names of eligible men to r u s h .
As everyone knows, our "product" is an
excellent one. It is the marketing of
the product that has been lax.
This quarter's efforts have resulted
in a much more organized rush plan and
a spring prospect list that is pushing
20 g o o d n a m e s of i n t e r e s t e d men who
will do more for the F r a t e r n i t y than
fill a rush quota.
Rho A l p h a ' s i m a g e on c a m p u s is
i m p r o v i n g every d a y . Our B r o t h e r s and
p l e d g e s are i n v o l v e d in a m y r i a d of
a c t i v i t i e s a n d c l u b s , a n d have made
great e f f o r t in bringing rushable
f r i e n d s out to the h o u s e . The other
g r e e k s on c a m p u s h a v e a m u c h b e t t e r
opinion of us these days, and we even
h o s t e d an IFC open f o r u m m e e t i n g in
January. Another reason that many other
f r a t e r n i t i e s a r e l o o k i n g over t h e i r
shoulder is our continued academic
achievement ... the Chapter took #1 in
grades yet again last f a l l . We had
b e t t e r get a bigger trophy case soon!

its o p e r a t i o n b e t t e r than any s t a f f
member has in a long time.
In c l o s i n g , I w o u l d l i k e to a g a i n
t h a n k t h e g r a d u a t e B r o t h e r s o f Rho
Alpha who have p e r f o r m e d above and
b e y o n d the call of d u t y . H a v i n g 20+
g r a d u a t e s brave icy J a n u a r y r o a d s to
make it to B l e a k s b u r g for a rush
weekend is j u s t an example of what Phi
Gamma D e l t a can mean to men who pass
through it.
The C h a p t e r s t i l l has much work to
do, but the new r u s h , social, and
EGA/House Corporation programs are
i m p r o v i n g the s i t u a t i o n w i t h every
p a s s i n g week. I look forward to seeing
the g r a d u a t e Brothers at Pig Dinner
W e e k e n d , if not b e f o r e at our spring
rush.
A s p e c i a l w e l c o m e to all the new
L i t t l e S i s t e r s and an extra thanks t-all the L i t t l e S i s t e r s for helping
Chapter out when we needed it. Welcome
Terry H a r r i s and Davis Eichelberger
back to Rho Alpha and good luck to Jim
Rooke as he transfers to VCU.
Bob Baney, D i r e c t o r of C h a p t e r
Services , will be the s p e a k e r at Pig
Dinner. He is an o u t s t a n d i n g individual
and speaker. Make sure you get to Pig
Dinner this year.
