Time For A Change
This is not an easy article to write.
It is time for a demonstrative change
at Chi lota in campus image, scholar
ship and overall chapter administra
tion. Let me explain.
Over the past several years, Phi
Gamma Delta has been in and out of
trouble with both the University and
Graduates. A campus wide image for
rowdiness coupled with poor judg
ment and scholarship culminated in
two incidents with other Greek
houses, one last Spring and again
this Fall. Both were "pranks" that got
out of hand (no one was harmed) yet
generated a series of Univesity/
Chapter/Graduate Board meetings.
At the University's urging, we or
ganized a Bead of Control composed
of local Phi Gamma Delta graduates.
Bill Goldstein will serve as Chairman
and other members include John
Phipps (DePauw '59), Todd Dawson
(DePauw '62). Chris Meyer, and
Hank Walters (Mich '86). Their
responsibility is to provide firm local
direction to help our chapter demon
strate substantial improvement.
They now meet regularly with the
chapter officers and University staff.
Chapter operations continue normal
lybut our local graduates are signifi
cantly more involved than other
previous advisors.
So, the chapter will be operating
with different objectives this Fall. Led
by president Jim Armstrong and his
cabinet, the chapter will be striving
for these changes in the '87-'88 year;

keep them very busy. Their dedica

them for their involvement.
All this attention is not so easy for

been positive and have resulted in
these actions.

The University of Illinois has set a
course to improve all aspects of Its
fraternity system. Phi Gamma Delta,
as a "name" house on campus, must
be a positive leader in this move
ment. None of us like to have anyone
looking over his shoulder, however,
the University's concern will do us
well in the long run.
You should know your House Cor
poration supports and is working
closely with the local Board of Con
trol and the Undergraduates. They
are acting positively and firmly to
return Phi (3amma Delta to its posi
tion of prominence at Illinois.

The Interfraternity Council along
with IBM and Unicom Software are
negotiating a computer and software
package which will meetthe individu
al chapter and Greek system's need
for computerization at a substantial
savings. With this new system, it is
the IFC's hope that there will be a
computerized Rush system for the
Spring, which will be similar to the 3
year old Panhellenic System. The
system will also have capabilities to:
handle allchapter finances including
accounting, printing house bill and
checks, recording membership and
alumni data, as well as word process

ration will be discussing the
possibilities at Homecoming on
October 31. While the whole Greek
