Alumni Day '82
DePauw's annual alumni weekend
was a great success again this year, and
Lambda chapter was proud to have an
impressive number of graduate brothers on hand for the festivities. Each
year in early June the university organizes a reunion for every fifth graduating class, and reserves all of its facilities for the enjoyment of alumni. This
summer's group seemed particularly
impressed with the new Lilly Center
for Physical Education and Recreation,
but sentimental ties to Bowman Gym
were obvious as alumnis flocked to an
auction sale to bid on floorboard bricks,
signs, and other memorabilia.
For the nine undergraduate Phi
Garns present, the highlight of the
weekend was the afternoon gathering
at the chapter house, organized by
George Dirks '29. Aside from the
Norris Pig Dinner, Alumni Weekend
is one of the few opportunities we have
to mix with such a large group of
graduate brothers. The fun and brotherhood which so naturally filled out
the afternoon confirmed once again the
fact that Phi Gamma Delta is not for
college days alone.

exit. Phi Garn house. Brotherhood
reignited. Stories. Beer. Smiles. Our
home.
The third week of August brought
great things to Lambda. It began with
an early return of the brothers to the
DePauw campus. Although summer
vacation was enjoyable as always, we
were ready to get back to the house, our
friends, and the books.
The first order of business was the
matter of rush. With quota set at 24, the
second largest quota out of the thirteen
fraternities on campus, we knew that
we had our work cut out for us. Our
goal was to fill the house without compromising on the quality of our future
brothers. Because of the intensity of
this cnallenge, our policy concerning
honesty became extremely important.
Since we had no desire to pledge anyone through the means of deception,
our rush tactics were highly personal.
This called for 100% effort from all
act!ve members. As a result of this
effort, the chapter acquired added
strength and unity which has continued to motivate us throughout the
fall semester.
The product of this hard work is
reflected in our full pledge class, 19 of
which came off of our first list. During
I their short existence as Fijis, the
pledges have already become involved
. in campus activities, house committees,
' intramurals, social functions, and of
! course, the pursuit of scholarship. We
would like to invite all of our graduate
1
brothers to visit the chapter and meet

Fall 1982
President's Corner
Greetings from Lambda. During
this holiday season, the brothers of
Lambda look back on a semester that
has seen successes, challenges, and
growth.
The semester got off to a great start
when the chapter sent four undergraduates to Toronto, Canada for
Ekklesia. Besides offering a chance
to experience a great city, Ekklesia
gave those who attended a greater
appreciation of the scope and breadth
of Phi Gamma Delta. Especially encouraging was the seven Lambda graduates w o were a so m atten ance.
For the younger brothers, a new
appreciation of the history and continuity was instilled.
The positive impact of Ekklesia was
strongly felt in rush. Fiji was the place
to be as the enthusiasm and spirit of the
brothers enabled us to take a pledge
class that is definitely right at the top if
not the best on campus. We certainly
think so.
Ekklesia and rush set the note for a
strong semester. Lambda increased her
campus involvement further established herself as a social leader, and
made her presence more strongly felt
on the DePauw campus.
But of course, our chapter is only as
strong on campus as it is internally
strong. Growing recognition and success have not prevented us from remembering our most basic purpose: to
share friendship and give support to a
brother in need. The bond of brotherhood at Phi Gamma Delta has been
subject to difficult tests in the past and
will undoubtedly face them in the
future. But facing those challenges
makes us stronger as a chapter and
gives us more faith in ourselves as a
brotherhood.
Please feel free to stop by and share
in our confidence. We eagerly await
hearing from you.

A Note from the
Editors
We hope that this issue of the Tiger
Fiji has been of interest to you as a
graduate brother. It has come about
through a considerable effort on the
part of our committee, which we would
like to thank. We feel that it is our
purpose in publishing this letter to
better inform you of the happenings
within the chapter house and in doing
this, enlist your support and interest in
what you are still very much a part of.
Also, we are beginning with this issue
of the newsletter an attempt to provide
you with information on things that are
of more direct interest to you: ie, the
- - -i...nn;-nr-vm:n- pledge-t:lrntners, their
whereabouts, etc. However to do this it
is essential that we have your cooperation and participation. With this issue
of the Tiger Fiji we have included a
questionnaire which we encourage
you to take the time to fill out and
return to us. This questionnaire will be
used to gather pertinent information
on graduate brothers so that we will be
able to compile a graduate information
file that will serve you as well as us.
From this it should be clear that the
undergraduate chapter does have a
vital interest in its graduate brothers.
As a further example of our desire
to involve the graduate chapter, we are
also pursuing the possibility of renewing interest in the BCA (Board of
Chapter Advisors) . The board has been
in existence for quite some time now

but we feel that it could be expanded
and intensified to increase the amount
and quality of input. For instance, some
of you may have a special interest in
house imp rovements, pledge education, or the financial aspect of the
house. The BCA will provide a link
between the graduate and undergraduate chapters: a link that will serve
to better relations and understanding.
Finally, we would like to point out
that this is your newsletter, not ours.
Therefore, if you have any questions or
requests please feel free to write, call,
or visit us anytime. The doors to Phi
Gamma Delta are always open and we
think you will be pleased to discover
that Fiji hospitality is still alive and well.
Thank you for your cooperation on
returning the questionnaires. We hope
that this correspondence will be the
beginning of a new, sustained interest
in Phi Gamma Delta.
