PIG DINNER '82: AN EVENTFUL DAY
The annual Norris Pig Dinner was a
fine success this year. The dinner,
on February 28th., culminated
weekend activity of many Brothers,
also attended a very exciting and
held
the
who
suc
cessful I.U.-Purdue basketball contest.
The day began for the graduate brothers
with the important meeting of the Lambda
Iota Graduate Corporation members and
Board of Directors. After an informative
Treasurer's Report, Brother Terry
Heath, '75, opened the old business by
reporting on the limited edition prints of
the Chapter House. Heath reported that
unsold prints are still available through
Brother John O. Coffin, '59. The class of
'61 presented a print in memory of
Robert M. Woodard, '61. Other old bus
iness included discussion on the grand
piano and dining room floor. The
graduate brothers voted to purchase a
Yamaha 5'7" grand piano. A new vinyl
asbestos tile floor was decided upon to
replace the existing floor. Both of these
items were added to the Chapter House
by Spring break. These gifts are very
much appreciated by the undergraduate
brothers. Many young Phi Gams now
wish that they had continued taking the
piano lessons that their mothers made
them take when they were youngsters!
The meeting was adjourned after new of
ficers and board members were elected
for the coming year.
After the busy meeting, the Pig Din
ner was held at the Trails, north of West
Lafayette. After a nice chit-chat happy
hour, the brothers were treated to an ex
cellent steak dinner. Following dinner,
the pledge class of '85 was introduced to
the graduates, along with various reports
from undergraduate and graduate of
ficers. The main speaker for the evening
was Archon President Joe Carney.
Brother Carney delivered an interesting
speech to all brothers in presence. All in
all, the Norris Pig Dinner day was a fun
time for everyone involved.

"Positive Pledge Program"
The 1981-82 school year has seen
some major changes in the Lambda lota's
pledge program.
Hazing, a controversial subject any
where is no longer a part of Lambda
lota's pledge program. The 1981-82
school year saw some major changes in
our pledgeship. Last year a Pledge Pro
gram committee was organized. The goal
of the committee was to design a con
structive program and build good
brothers, not good pledges. The program
had its rough spots but forward gains
been in the past. An example being class
unity. No longer are the pledges pushed
through punishing line-ups and exercise
sessions. Instead the pledges performed
projects designed to get them working
together as a group; and that promoted
leadership. An example being a can drive
for the needy that the pledges planned
and executed themselves.
This was the first year for the new
pledge program so it needs much im
provement and requires a lot more work
on it. However, a major step in fighting
were made. An important step was a pos
hazing has begun, and the committee is

"Run For the Money"
The Lambda Iota Phi Gams very
much enjoyed the festivities of Grand
Prix week this year, April 19-April 14.
Along with our fim-loving Grand Prix
partners, the Phi Mus, we started
building momentum on Monday for the
Silver Anniversary running of the Grand
Prix on Saturday. On Monday evening,
we brought back memories of the John
Belushi movie, "Animal House", with a
Toga party. Tuesday evening was the
time for our annual Formal Champagne
dance. A mini "Fiji Island" party was on
the itinerary for Thursday. With the
courtyard filled with sand, people run
ning aroimd in Hawaiian clothes, and
Beach Boys music playing, the house
definitely looked and soimded like a
beach party. Friday was a mellow day as
we all had a cookout at Fort Quiateron
south of West Lafayette. Saturday morn
ing was the last fire-up for the main event
— the race. Gerry Mason ('83) started the
race in his hi-performance kart from the
8th position in a field of 33 karts. Gerry
was progressing very well when the race
was red flagged due to a terrible wreck of
another driver who crashed into the re
taining waU and flipped up and over a
of the race followed with Gerry eventual
ly climbing into the lead. However,
Gerry's kart had a slight malfimction and
he was forced to drop out of the race.
However, he finished a respectable 18th
in the race. For the third year in a row,
Gary Irvin of Irvin's Concrete Products
gave us considerable financial support to
our Grand Prix entry. Gary is also going
to attempt to race in this year's In
dianapolis 500 on Memorial Day
weekend. Many thanks and much good
luck go to Gary.
The imdergraduate Phi Gams were
not the only ones to have fun on the
Grand Prix weekend. Many members
and wives of the Phi Gam class of'37 at
tended the festivities. Bob Loehr, class of
'37, writes us: "In case you are not
already aware of it, I wanted to let you
know that the Fiji class of '37 was well

What is known to us as "Run for the

philanthropic project by the West

had a wonderful time during our stay on
campus and are looking forward to our
50th in 1987. A niunber of us were able
to visit 640 Russell during om- stay and
were quite favorably impressed. The
physical condition of the house was ex

were made to feel at home." The Lambda

Housing Units At Purdue
A new alcohol policy took effect
January 1, 1982 concerning the pos
session and consiunption of alcoholic
beverages on the premises of the Uni
versity recognized Greek and Co-op hous
ing organization. This new policy allows
limited possession and consumption of
alcoholic beverages, whereas the old
policy prohibited such actions in
recognized housing imits. Conditions of
the new policy include:
• Under no circumstances may
alcoholic beverages be sold.
• Alcoholic beverages may not be
available at any event where an ad
mission fee is charged.
• Alcoholicbeveragesmay not be con
sumed outside the house.
• Alcoholic beverages and containers
for alcoholicbeveragesmany not be
displayed outside the house.
• Alcoholic beverages may not be pro
vided or consiuned at any open
event.
This policy was formed by staff
members of the Dean of Students office
and various members of off campus stu
dent organizations. The main idea in
creating a new policy was to recognize
that consumption occurs by underaged
students but that students should be
educated on the problems of alcohol
abuse through some type of new policy.
This new policy will hopefully help in
limiting the chance of any serious acci
dent that may occur due to drinking and
also the liability associated with such an
accident.
Mother's Weekend/
U-SIng Competition
Saturday, April 17th was a day that
many Mothers and Sons will remember
for a long while. This was a day in which
the Fiji's competed in the annual U-Sing
competition and also danced with their
Moms into the wee hours of the night.
The day started with a nice luncheon be
ing served to the Moms and Sons. After
limch, the Fiji's teamed with the Alpha
Phi's in the preliminary round of U-Sing.
We were well prepared for this event as
we had practiced the songs, "Music
Makes My Day Seem Right" and "Hello,
Young Lovers" for over a month's time.
However, the judges somehow did not
think we were one of the top eight groups
who advanced to the finals held in Elliott
Hall of Music on Saturday night. I guess
that's the breaks of the game! Following
the preliminaries, a dinner was served to
the Moms and Sons. Many Moms and
Sons then went to watch and listen to the
groups in the finals. Following night
sing, the real fun began! A very fini party
began at the house at 10:00 p.m. and
lasted imtil 3 a.m.! With the Alpha Phi's,
their Moms, and the Fiji Moms, the
Lamsda Iota Fiji's had to be tired from
dancing all night! It definitely was a day
to remember for everyone.

THE BOILERMAKER FIJI
Phi Gam Campus Leaders
Dear Graduate Brothers,
It is never too early to start thinking about our rush program. We
are truly looking forward to a successful one this year. Rush will start
on August 29th and end sometime in mid-October. Some of our ideas
include pizza with the graduates, cookouts, and a hayride. If you have
any ideas, contributions, or especially names of possible Fiji material,
please feel free to contact me. There is a rush form attached to the
Boilermaker Fiji for your convenience.
The Fiji House has again returned to
campus activity scene this year with many
brothers involved in the leadership of
several organizations. Jim Dodson ('83)
has been very active. In addition to his
house treasurer duties, Jim is the PSA
Student Representative to the Board of
Trustees. Mortar Board, DDK, Ginlet
and College Republicans arealso some of
the organizations which Jim is a member.
Members of U-CAN include Buddy
