52 Alums Come Home
Over 50 graduate brothers returned to Evanston on
the weekend of Oct. 16-18, 1987, contributing to one
of Phi Chapter’s most successful Homecomings in many
years. About 20 graduates joined their younger brethren
in ushering in the weekend Friday eveing at an ever-
popular FIJI TG cocktail party.
After watching the Homecoming parade float down
Sheridan Road, the chapter focused its attention on a
more southern locale. Pledge fathers were announced
at “the Rock,” which was later transformed into a mas-
terpiece of royal purple. For the tenth straight year,
Homecoming weekend visitors yiewed the majestic
white star of Phi Gamma Delta on “the Rock.”
Saturday brought a typically brisk Evanston morning.
The strong winds made our pregame tailgate party easy
to find, however, as the FIJI flag (donated by the Class
of °78) flew high over the Dyche Stadium parking lot.
Brothers enjoyed fraternizing over lunch and cocktails
before passing through the gates with upset on their
minds.
There seemed to be an unusual amount of optimism
around campus because this weekend marked the
twenty-fifth anniversary of Northwestern’s brief stint at
the top of the college football polls. Coach Ara Parseg-
hian and several players from that team were on hand
to increase the nostalgic and hopeful feeling. Unfortu-
nately, Michigan State refused to cooperate. Led by
superstar running back Lorenzo White, the Spartans
trounced NU 38-0.
Refusing to let the blowout dampen their weekend,
FIJIs young and old returned to the house for the annual
champagne reception. The bubbly and the conversation
flowed freely into the night. Graduates shared fond
memories of their days at NU and undergraduates in-
formed them of current activities.
Graduates in attendance included: Joe Accetta, Cliff
Aspegren, Gary Beasley, Dave Bercu. ic Brackett, Dan

A Message from the President
Brothers,
It was another busy Fall quarter here at Phi Chapter
Starting with a successful rush in which we attracted 12
stellar pledges, the chapter quickly moved on to Home-
coming and the parents reception on Parents’ Weekend.
One factor which contributed to the success of these
events and the running of the chapter as a whole was a
strong chapter tone. The chapter is currently at full oc-
cupancy; besides the obvious budgetary benefits this
entails, it also generates incredible chapter tone. This
tone, combined with motivated Phi Gamms and active
graduate brothers has helped to create the leading
Northwestern fraternity that Phi Chapter is today.
Looking back, I am very satisfied with the improve-
ments which occurred during my tenure as President, _
and I am confident that the next cabinet will expand
upon these improvements as we did on those of the
previous cabinet. Yet, if these improvements are to con-

President Bradley David Barbera (’89)
served the Chapter as corresponding secretary
last year. A Cincinnati native and a chemical
engineering major, Brad was a starting goal-
hails from Tacoma, Washington. Tom was
_ chapter steward last year. He is majoring in
electrical engineering and is also in the naval
ROTC program.
Recording Secretary David Bryan Sigman
(89) was rush chairman in the spring of 1987.
He is majoring in American culture and pre-
med and is a Resident Assistant in NU’s largest
dormitory. Dave is from Baltimore, Maryland.
_ Corresponding Secretary John Hugo

journalism major, John published the Scrib-
bler for the last year and is also active on cam-
pus radio and television.

tinue, Phi is going to need more than a full house or
strong chapter tone. Major structural defects as well as
faulty electrical and water systems are everyday prob-
lems at the chapter. If we are to continue to attract high
quality rushees we must be able to provide them with
the basics of quality of life.
Your support as graduate brothers in the form of ac-
tive involvement with the chapter or monetary con-
tributions is of vital necessity. I encourage you all to
stop by the house for a Friday cocktail party, to meet
the undergraduate chapter and see for yourself the ex-
cellence that exists here and why it is important to pre-
serve it.

Halloween Party
Phi Chapter introduced a new philanthropic event
this fall, joining forces with our sister sorority, Kappa
Alpha Theta, to host a Halloween party. Nearly forty
children from the Better Boys Foundation of Chicago
dressed up to come trick-or-treating at the Chapter
house.
Philanthropy Chairman Paul Moretta (90) organized
the event, but the entire Chapter joined forces in pre-
paring for the little monsters. Pumpkin carving and bob-
bing for apples were held in the living room while the
second and third floor rooms were converted into a
haunted house.
The children were able to trick-or-treat from room
to room and were treated to a fireside ghost story before
they returned home. The whole party was a tremendous
_ success, with-children, Thetas and Fijis-alike-expecting—}—
it to become an annual event.
Cowboy Tom Lohuis (90) and a Theta friend help a child
carve her pumpkin.

FUJIs Down Under
From the wild undersea beauty of the Great Barrier
Reef, to the desert “outback,” to the steps of the Sydney
Opera House, Phi Chapter alums have been exploring
the land down-under in force. Vance Freymann ’81,
Scott Snyder ’82 and Peter Baskin ’83 decided that the
trip-of-a-lifetime could be best enjoyed in fraternal
style.
Creating perhaps the greatest “road trip” in Phi’s h™
tory, they managed to overlap diverse itineraries on .
other side of the world last May and June. For some, the
trip involved nearly a year’s planning. For one it was a
spontaneous decision made only weeks before the

film service company. His most recent encounter with
other Fijis took place at a party for Vance Freymann
(81) at Brad Willen’s condo in New York City. Others
in attendance included Erwin Aulis (80), Justin Skala
(82) and Scott Snyder (’82). J-D remembers falling off
the second story of the chapter house during Bone Vigil
in 1977. He sends congratulations to Rob Knepper for
his recent starring role in “Wild Thing,” and “Hi” to
pledge dad “Bean Dog” Abbene (’77).

advisor to the commander of American forces in Azores,
Portugal. Last year he met Vance Freymann and H.B.
Willen for a Mexican meal in San Francisco. “Dowzer”
fondly recalls 1981 Bone Delivery, including the “truly
outrageous dancing bear.” He says to all brothers, “If
you can find Terceira Island in the Azores, you are wel-
come to visit. Bon viajem!”
Jon Vukovich married Lin Halifield on January 9 in
Pensacola, Florida. Also attending were Vukovich’s best
man John Kukral (’82), groomsman Steve De Palma
7682), usher Eddie Williams (’83), Mark Reis (84),
id Justin Skala (’82). Jon and Lin will live in San
Diego. :
Patrick R. Connor, a communications studies major
and former cheerleading captain, is currently an as-
sociate marketing manager with the Pillsbury Co.
John Kukral celebrated his engagement to Karen Bain

Robert G. Miller, Jr. is a pension accountant with the
Northern Trust Company. Bob, who majored in
€conomics and played varsity baseball while at NU,
fondly recalls Fiji Island ‘84.
Dave “Cu” Bercu is a real estate broker with Bennett
& Kahnweiler Inc. in Chicago. His favorite memory is
of Mark Dooley (‘90) giving the “Cu” rap. Dave’s mes-
sage to Craig Nossel (‘88): “Get a job, holmes!”
10,000-mile journey. For all it was an adventure never
to be forgotten.
And as a good idea continued to gain momentum,
John Kukral 82 and Rob Shaw ’83 also attempted to join
the travelling FIjIs — John, on a rugby team tour of
Australia and Rob, looking for a chance to be arrested
in another hemisphere.
In sum, it was a wild time. One minute feeding kan-
garoos, the next trying not to feed crocodiles and
sharks, and then feeding faces with notorious Aussie
meat pies and a cold “stubby of lager.” With such exotic
pleasures it didn’t take long to become awe-struck
aliens! The Aussies displayed a genuine friendliness and
harbor no ill feelings over the loss of the America’s Cup.
‘Win or lose they really know how to celebrate (and
regret it in the morning). A mighty “phine” time was
had by all! =
