• GAVEL'S REPORT •
'BrotfuTs,
I amfaced with the privilege and challenge of being president ofKappa Deuteron during its twentieth anniversary. Twen-
fy years at the university of Georgia almost qmlifies us as an oldfraternity, and with age can comefrailty as well as wisdom.
fCapP^ D^titeron is now at whatI consider a crucial turning point. We have the talents and abilities among our brotherhood to
ones again take the Cheney Cup and enjoy the recognition ofexcellence. We are also quite capable ofgently and lazily sliding
Ifito an existence of mediocrity. This cabinet and chapter are committed to theformer, but it will take more than a commitment,
jt will take new ideas and action. These "new ideas" that we need may well be ones that worked in the 1970's, but over time were
forgotten. This action need not come solelyfrom our 71 undergraduates when there is a twenty year resource ofgraduates to tap.
After visiting several other chapters this summer I am convinced that graduate input is vital! One chapter had graduates
of40 years regularly volunteering their time and help to insure that their chapter prospered. Kappa Deuteron began in 1966 with
jio Kappa Deuteron graduates to help, and it prosperedfor years with no graduate support to speak of. But now we have a large
number ofalumni and the responsibilityfor our chapter still in part rests on you. I challenge all graduates to in some way con
tribute this year, whether it be by advice, physical work, financial donations, or your brotherhood shared in a visit. Whatever the
nieans, have a continued impact on Kappa Deuteron.

WINTER RUSH
Winter rush of 1988 was a huge success where Phi Gamma Delta pledged four of the
finest men on campus. Beginning Sunday, January 10, rush lasted five days and featured the
annual Little-Sister skit Wednesday as weU as a fine performance from the Woodies, one of
the areas most popular bands, Thursday evening.
The Gamma Triton pledge class, although smaU,is extremely promising. Jonathan Lee
Westin Roseman,a freshman, is an Economics major from Stone Mountain. Christopher John
Daniel, a sophomore, majoring in Risk-Management and Insurance from Morrow, Georgia.
Rodney Eugene Hawkins, a sophomore, is an Accounting major from Riverdale, Georgia.
Steven Oliver Dunn, a freshman,is a Business major from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta have great expectations for these four men. May
they grow to be leaders on campus and in the fraternity and represent us well.

PUBLICATIONS
As the new Publications Chairman, I would like to take this opportunity to ask you, the
graduates, for your help. This is not the easiest job in our chapter, but without your input it
is nearly impossible. My goal for this committee is to put out an in-depth FIJIUGA once per
quarter with the PHI GAM-O-GRAM such as this to be used in an as needed capacity for time
ly announcements and information concerning our chapter. The formula that I would like to
see in the FIJIUGA would be 70% graduate news, 25% undergraduate news, and 5% Athens
area and University news. This sounds great and looks good on paper but the 70% graduate
news must come from you. I can not make it up. If you, or someone you know, has accom
plished something, send it in. Are you starting a new business? Is your company looking for
a few good men? Got a promotion? Got a raise? Fathered a child? Gotten married? (not ne
cessarily in that order) please, send it in. We can help you keep up with our brothers if you
keep up with us. Send the information to Steve Fowler, Publications Chairman, 3 Cloverhurst
Court, Athens, OA 30605, or call 404-353-0503.
