TIGER FIJI
DePauw University "Not for college days alone"
Phi Gamma Delta, DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana
Dear Brothers,
Greetings from
DePauw! As the new
Chapter President I
thought I would introduce myself. I am a
senior from Winnetka,
Illinois. Last year I
spent a semester in Los Angeles going
to Paramedic School near Inglewood. I
have had quite a bit of experience with
Phi Gamma Delta; serving as Chapter
Treasurer for the two past years. I am
extremely excited and am looking forward to the upcoming year.
Lambda must prepare itself for the
future. The Phi Gamm national motto
is "The Quest for Excellence," and we
intend to fulfill this goal. On those lines
we plan to stress brotherhood and
strengthen both our academic and intramural standing on campus.
Efficiency is a prime objective for
Fiji this year. The most important aspect is in our financial obligations. We
need these to be promptly met, so that
we may be better able to effectively
manage our affairs.
And lastly, we have begun totally
revamping our in-house committee
structure. We have incorporated new
innovative ideas with the rich heritage
of the past.
I would like to integrate the graduates into the daily lives of Lambda
Chapter. We desperately need your
help! Perhaps the best way to achieve
this would be for all of you to join us
here on April 22 for the 1989 Phi
Gamma Delta Norris Pig Dinner. Being
on the same day as Little 500, we hope
everyone can make it for a great day. It
should be fun, but more importantly it
will provide a forum for your ideas.

Fiji Shifts Into High Gear For Little 500
Little 500. Every year this bicycle race raises the adrenalin of DePauw's
campus, and every year Fiji leads the way. This year's contest involves Fijis in all
areas. Greg Morical ('90) is co-Rules chairman. A judge last year, Greg will head the
pan.el of judges th!s y~ar to insure a safe and fair race. Marc Rile ('91) is co-Timing
chairman, following m the footsteps of brother Tom Lewis ('88) who last year
revitalized the timing system by turning it into a computer operated format.
Newly initiated member Greg Shapleigh ('90) is a veteran member of the
riders' adviso~ board, keeping track of any questions the riders have concerning
the race. Shapleigh, who rode the race last year for Mason Hall, is one of the top 200
professional riders in the nation; he will be a great asset to the team.
Chris Gilbert ('91) will announce both the men's and women's races for the
second. consecutive year. It will be his voice which will proudly proclaim Fiji
champion on race day.
Shapleigh and second-year rider John Kneisley ('91) head the team itself, with
several other brothers in hot contention for the remaining two spots. All in all, Phi
Gamma Delta leads the charge for the checkered flag on race day, April 22. Time
Trials are in early April. GO FIJI!!!
A team determined to bring the traphy home.

Right now we are seeking to improve

HOOTS FROM THE OWL
Hoffman Wins Racquetball
Over the past few months Fiji has done exceptionally well in four more IM
efforts. One of the highlights was Drew Hoffman's victory in racquetball. Drew
placed first in second singles with a dramatic 3 game win in the finals. Mark
Willmert also did very well, making it to the semi-finals in third singles.
The basketball team finished with its best record in over 5 years. After starting
off 0-2 with lo.seslo the..exentual champions and runner-up, the Garns finished the
remaining 6 games with 5 wins to wind up with a very strong 5-3 record and an impressive fourth place finish. The team was led by seniors Vic Lewis and Thai Pham
along with sophomores John Kneisley, Bill Bachand freshman Jake Riffer to round
out a very strong starting 5.
The Fiji swim team once again was a force to be reckoned with. Jason Erb and
Brian Thornburg each had two first place finishes in two events to lead us to a
second place finish, missing the championship by just 1 point!
Volleyball was led by captains Chris Gilbert and Rob Johnson. These two
played key roles as spikers for the team which once again had a very good year, but
who unfortunately just missed the playoffs.
Soccer is currently underway and Lambda is off to a 5-0 start including a 1-0
victory over Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the champions for the past two years. We are on
our way to the title and we will settle for nothing less. Pride and determination will
make it happen!

IM Chairman
Brother Bill McGaughey, '35
would welcome letters from any brothers of the 1928-40 period. He has recently launched a "communication
exchange" by and for brothers willing
to report their news and offer their
comments. The new project, a successor to Fiji Mail Drop, edited by
McGaughey from 1986-88, is known as
HOOTS FROM THE OWL and is embellished with the Fiji crest. He plans to
issue HOOT about four times a year,
initially at no cost to contributor, but
eventually accepting money for postage and handling.
Those interested in participating
should write to William H .
McGaughey, P.O. Box 244, Milford, PA
18337.
Graduates,
The most important
events of this semester
coincide on the same
day. Little 500 and Pig
Dinner will be held on
April 22nd. This year
we are planning many
events for the graduates participation.
We will have a volleyball tournament,
Euchre tournament, a "real" pig roast
held in the backyard, and of course the
Little 500 race. I encourage you to get
back to me as soon as possible so we can
get an idea of what you would like to
do.
Thank you,
John Tuhey

"Lambda Philanthropies - 1 down 2 to go"
Brothers,
Lambda Social Service is looking strong this semester. An amazing three
philanthropies have been slated with one nearing completion.
The first of these projects, a clothing drive to benefit Goodwill, has been quite
successful. Brothers have already collected hundreds of clothes from the Greencastle community at large. More donations of clothing are expected to pile in.
The second of these philanthropies will be an Easter Egg Hunt held on March
26, Easter-Sunday at the Greencastle-Ghristian-Chur-eh. Children between the ages
of 2 and 6 are expected to participate. This project will help Lambda's relations with
the community churches not to mention the thrill it will bring the brothers from
working with the toddlers.
This semester Social Service concludes with our annual Fiji Isle Philanthropy.
Many ideas for this have been suggested but none have been finalized as of yet. All
proceeds will benefit Putnam County Operation Life. This will follow up last year's
donation of $2,500.
With these three projects we will be benefiting all ages of the community and if
the other two philanthropies are as successful as the first, Lambda will be walking
tall in Greeencastle.
