evening for Fiji, Theta, and the parents.
Phi Gams lead cast In play
Senior Chris Gilbert, and junior Mike
Musgrave were both cast with leading roles
in the Parent's Weekend production of The
Fantastiks. Brother Gilberts starred at El Gallo,
a semi professional actor in need of money,
and Brother Musgrave starred as Matt, a
young boy experiencing the difficulties of
love. The play involved the classic tale of the
trials and tribulations of adolescents in love.
There were a total of four productions; one
each night from Thursday , October 20 through
Sunday, October 23. The reviews were good,
and the production was well received with
both the Friday and Saturday night shows
being sold out.
Gilbert, from San Pedro, CA, is a communications major, and Musgrave, from Ft.
Wayne, IN , is an English Composition major.

Rush yields shortage of pledges
The Brothers at the Garn seemed
poised and ready to once again dominate Rush on Oct. 10-13. Last year's
success of having the second highest
percentage of returns among the 13
fraternities appeared to be another
achievable goal for the Garn. Unfortunately, this picture never became a
reality.
Instead, the Brothers at 916 S.
College Ave . experienced its worst
nightmare when only 4 freshmen
pledged Fiji out of a quota of 23. A
number of factors contributed to this
unfavorable outcome, the first being
the low turnout in Rush.
Last year's registration of 290
freshman men for Rush dropped by
eighteen percent to 230 Rushees.
Competition among the 13 fraternities
for pledges was evident during the six
weeks pre-Rush period, which gave
fraternities the chance to exploit one
another's deficiencies. One of those
exploitations was directed towards Phi
Gamma Delta.
Last year's hazing incident, which
led to one academic year of social
pro at1onand prohibition from participating in intramural sports, was the
most significant factor. "I believe we
underestimated the effect that probation was going to have on us," Co-Rush
Chairman Steve Acken, junior, said.
Acken attributed the low number of
pledges to a failure of most freshmen to
see through the probationary status the
chapter was currently undergoing.
Junior Dan Kiely, who was a rush
counselor in charge of taking a rush group
of 16 freshman men to every fraternity,
believed the low pledge turnout had a lot
to do with the six weeks, delayed Rush.
According to Brother Kiely, the freshmen
were virtually deprived of any association
with fraternity social life, which put social
activity high on their list when looking at
fraternities. "A lot of the guys in my group
were basing their decisions to pledge a
certain house on things like 'Well, this
house parties with the best girls on campus,'" he said.
Junior Conrad Almase, another Fiji
rush counselor, concurred with Kiely.
"Maybe the house deserved this low turnout for its hazing incident," he said. "But it
still bothers me to hear this kind of mentality from the freshman."
The delayed Rush had other implications as well. "The six weeks delayed
Rush gave freshmen the chance to find
out about our hazing incident," Co-Rush
Chairman Bob Stefanakos, junior, said, "I
think some felt ' hazing would continue
which scared them off."
The next logical step for Lambda
Chapter is to work on obtaining spring
pledges. Although the Greek system at
DePauw is not know for producing spring
pledges, the Rush chairmen hope to re-
cruit as many as possible to help offset the
heavy financial burden which the house
currently faces.
The Rush chairman also want to stress
the fact that Fiji recruited a quality pledge
class. "We got four stand-up guys who aren't
narrow-minded and were able to see through
our situation," Acken said.
This year's pledge class consists of
freshmen Brandon Davis, Chad Woolums,
Jason Kiely, and Andy Slipher. Davis is
from Elwood, Indiana. He is here on an
academic/financial aid scholarship. He plans
to major in biology and is interested in
theater work.
Woolums, also from Elwood, was valedictorian of his senior class and is here on
the Rolla Malpas Trust Scholarship. He
plans to major in either economics or English composition. Woolums also play
centerfield for the DePauw varsity baseball
team.
Kiely is from Birmingham, Alabama. As
of now, he is undecided on a major, but is
interested in theater. Kiely, an honor scholar,
is also a legacy to his older brother, junior
Daniel Kiely.
Slipher, originally from Kokomo, Indiana, now resides in Noblesville. He is planning on majoring in communications with a
possible minor in art. He served on
Noblesville High School's newspaper and
magazine publications which spurred his
interest in the communication field .

The fall season is always a busy
time for Lambda Chapter and this autumn was no exception as the Brothers
worked diligently on the fall philanthropies, while looking ahead to philanthropy
projects in the spring.
The semester began with the fourth
annual Fiji Volleyball Tournament to benefit
the Greencastle Food Pantry. The tournament was held the weekend of September 29-30. The philanthropy raised
over $700 for the cause and, of course,
everyone had a fun time in a friendly
spirit of competition.
The second philanthropy of the semester was the traditional Wabash-DePauw Fiji Football Run held on Saturday, November 10 on Monon Bell weekend. On the eve of the fourth straight
DePauw victory over Wabash, sophomore
Bryan Johnson ran 16 miles from
Greencastle to the half-way mark on Route
231
between
Greencastle
and
Crawfordsville, with the Wabash Fijis
covering the remainder of the distance.
Brother Johnson, who runs cross-country
for DePauw, volunteered to run for Lambda
and for Riley's Children Hospital, which
received over $1 OOOforthe DePauw-Wabash
Fiji fund-raiser.
Currently, the chapter is planning for
the spring semester. Among a number of
possible ideas being considered are an
Easter Egg Hunt for Greencastle children
and a Lift-a-than to raise money for a
charity to be determined. "We're trying to
raise a lot of money for the various charities
for the reason that a successful social
service will definitely help improve relations
with the community and the university,"
Social Service Chairman Jeff Kaye,
sophomore, said.
