PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Brothers,
First let me begin this president's letter by
thanking all the graduates for the unbelievable
amount of support they have been giving. Our
graduate support has not only helped us make
noticeable improvements in the house, it has also
aroused an ambitious feeling throughout the
undergraduate chapter.
During the summer the cabinet had several
meetings to work out a direction in which we felt
the chapter should move. We set up goals for both
the cabinet and the chapter which we planned to
discuss later at the chapter retreat. As a cabinet we

felt that we needed more committee heads and more
cabinet interaction, so we divided the committees up
in a way so that each committee has an overseeing
officer and an assistant officer.
The idea behind
this is to improve aspects of the committee and
cabinet interaction and to improve the overall
performance of the chapter.
Also, during the summer we felt that the
FALL '90
chapter retreat would be a crucial event to get the
house moving in the right direction. This retreat,
held on September 8th at Gompei's Place, was a
very encouraging one.
First, the individual
committees presented their goals to the chapter at
which time there was an open discussion on their
goals and how the committee heads could improve
any aspects of their jobs. We also set our goals as
a chapter. Some of these goals include improving

winning of a major national award."
the involvement of all members of the house, more
efficient use of the committee system, and the
winning of a major national award. The latter took
much discussion because it was felt that the chapter
had the potential to win several major awards.
Finally, it was decided that the chapter would strive
for the Cheney Cup, feeling that it is indeed a
reachable goal.
Additionally, we discussed the upcoming
planned events. Homecoming, October 6th, should

\r\nbe better than ever.
This would be an excellent
opportunity to come back and meet with old friends
and make plans for the upcoming Pig Dinner. Pig
Dinner, April 13th, is one not to miss; it is the kick
off of the centennial celebration. William Zerman
(Michigan '49), the educational director and former
executive director of the International Fraternity,
will be the keynote speaker.
This is going to be an exciting and eventful
year and we hope to see many graduates throughout
the year at dinners, on weekends, or at any time.
We look forward to seeing you and to a great year.
Fraternally yours,
Jim Detora '91

TREASURER'S REPORT
The coming year looks very promising.
With an initial goal of improving the collection of
funds virtually accomplished, secondary goals of
converting the manual bookkeeping system over to
computers and individual committee budgeting can
take the majority of my time.
During the summer a payment plan was
"...converting the manual bookkeeping over to

Treasurer's job.
Also, by giving each committee head a
monthly budget and reviewing it with them, it will
not only help the treasurer keep track of individual
committee spending and improve budgeting, but
will also heighten the awareness of the members of
the house on the amount of money that is available
for productive use during the year.
Finally, our graduate accounts receivable has
begun to decline. Beginning last Pig Dinner, the
publishing of the outstanding balances in the Pi Ides
and working closely with Mark Macaulay and the
B.C. A. in contacting people, we feel confident that
the graduate accounts receivable will be around five
thousand dollars by the upcoming Pig Dinner.
We have lofty expectations for the year and
we hope that this upward trend continues!

balance to account for the time value of money,
encouraging people to pay early.
For the remainder of the year, I will work
with my committee on converting out current
budgeting system onto LOTUS 1-2-3. This will
significantly reduce the time that future treasurers

more time to improve other aspects of the

order of repair will be the pebble beach roof which
will start to cause significant water damage unless
it is fixed soon.
New ideas of the house committee have
\r\ngotten the brotherhood more involved as a whole.
There are many other smaller projects that need to
be done that will improve the appearance of the
house. These projects will take a 100% effort by

the house. They include the replacement of all
broken windows panes, painting the windows inside
and out,
refinishing the dining room floor,
refinishing the stairs, and several others. These
projects will be completed in the next couple of
weeks in time for Homecoming on October 6th.
The renovation is underway, but in order to
keep the ball rolling. Alumni support is greatly
needed. I would like to take this opportunity to
invite you to Homecoming this year. This would
give you the chance to see how the house is shaping
up and more importantly to be amongst your FIJI
brothers again.

agree, the twenty new brothers included, that the
ritual is something very special to the privileged
few allowed to experience it.
As neophytes, these twenty men participated
in Post Initiation training (PIT). Along with PIT,
came new responsibilities - reading the by-laws,
reciting, reading the constitution, learning more
about the Fraternity. Through Pit, the neophytes
developed an even greater appreciation for the
customs and traditions that are the ritual.
After
finally completing PIT, these twenty probationers
were given the benefits of Fraternal association.
"...the glory of Phi Gamma Delta..."
The Brothers at Pi Iota hold the ritual in the
highest regard. This we attempt to pass on to new
initiates so they, in turn, will pass our most
precious inheritance on to those fortunate enough to
follow. This has been successfully accomplished
for 100 years and, hopefully, will continue for
hundreds more.
With Fraternal Affections,

BOA MESSAGE
Dear Brethren,
If you missed Pig Dinner, you missed one great shindig. In the eyes of this BCA chairman, there
couldn't have been a better alumni event at WPI which surpassed Pig Dinner '90. One reason for the success
on April 7th was the cooperation and the interaction of the F.A. Morse and BCA with the undergraduate
chapter. The three worked harmoniously preparing Ole '99 for this prestigious Alumni event.
We will be passing into another year soon and with the loss of a few BCA members to the F.A. Morse,
we could afford to utilize the knowledge of some other graduates. There is a form in this issue of Pi Ides for
enlisting into the BCA or some other graduate activity. Please fill this out and return it if you are interested,
or if you would prefer to just show up at a meeting, go ahead.
Lastly, Congratulations to the class of '90 for graduating.
Forever Purple,
Mark J. Macaulay '89

WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE
Above is a copy of the lithographs of the house.
EXCERPT FROM:
THE PHI GAMMA DELTA QUARTERLY
Vol. 21 - October, 1899 - No. 4.
PI IOTA CHAPTER HOUSE OF PHI GAMMA DELTA,
WORCESTER, MASS.
The new chapter house of Pi Iota Chapter of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute has just been completed, and
will be ready for occupancy on the first day of October, 1899.
The house was built by the F.A. Morse Association, an incorporated body made up, with the exceptionof Brother
T. Alfred Vernon, of members of Pi Iota Chapter. The name of the association was adopted in the honor of Fred A.
Morse, a character member of the Worcester Chapter, who died shortly after completing his course at Tech. He was
a noble fellow, and a true staunch Fiji, and it is with no small amount of pride that the Worcester boys honor the name
of the one they held so dear.
The house is situated at the corner of Boynton and Salisbury Streets, facing the park, and commands an
uninterrupted view in three directions. The park is the most beautiful in the city, and almost directly behind the house
are the spacious grounds of the institute. All of the other land in the vicinity is owned by Hon. Stephen Salisbury, a
multi-millionaire, who is reserving all except a few side street lots for buildings of a more or less public nature, such as
the Art museum and the building of the American Society of Antiquity which he has recently built. And even those lots
that are disposed of are sold under such restrictions that only very fine residences may be built upon then - in fact, the
location of the new chapter house could not have been better in the city of Worcester.
The drawings accompanying this sketch will tell much about the house, and it need only be added that the interior
finish is all that could be desired, the first story and all the stairways being finished in quartered oak, and every floor
in the house is of polished hard wood. The property cost more than $20,000, and it looks every cent of it...

Brothers,
The Pi Iota Chapter at WPI continues to
consider the pursuit of academic excellence one of
the most important goals of the Greek community.
Driven by academic excellence, Pi Iota has
maintained one of the highest CPA's on campus.
This year, the Scholarship Committee plans to
provide weekly help/tutoring sessions to benefit the
pledges as well as providing a lengthy time
management course presented by Dr. Groccia,
Director of Student Counseling at WPI. These will
aid our new candidates in attaining the academic
standards which we have been proud of at Pi Iota
for 100 years. In addition, the Doc Atwood
Brotherhood Tutoring Award, set up by former
Scholarship Chairman Brian E. Hanlon in 1989,
will again be awarded in the Spring. Last years
winners were James M. Detora '91, Christopher J.
Gebo '90, and Mike J. Staffopoulos '90. The
recipients of last year's Pledge-Brother Scholarship
Award were Conan D. Fitzgerald '91 and Crispin
Battles '93. The goals this year include maintaining
our above average CPA and aiding the Brotherhood
in the educational process in an effort to strive
towards our pursuit of excellence.

STEWARD'S LETTER
Over the past summer the kitchen underwent several major changes. Through the help of graduate
support, we were able to purchase a new gas stove and install new linoleum. With these new additions, the
kitchen's appearance has been one of the highlights of our return to school. For the first time in years, the
brotherhood is no longer afraid to show their parents the kitchen. Another area which has changed, has been
the temporary creation of a co-steward position. With the elected steward now participating in the co-operative
education program, I have taken on some of the responsibilities he would have held. This temporary position
should reduce some of the everyday pressures past stewards have faced. Last years steward, Conan Fitzgerald,
has helped out greatly in these first few weeks.
Frank Holmes and I have established some goals for ourselves that we hope will maintain the kitchen's
appearance. Our first goal is to improve the attitude towards the kitchen. In past years, the brotherhood has
not treated the kitchen with as much respect as they should have. We hope to instill the same attitude as is
taken at home in their parents' kitchens. Our second goal is to involve our committee members more. We
hope to keep them familiar with the bookkeeping necessary to ensure a well run kitchen as well as keeping
them an integral part of daily upkeep and procedures. This should help with an easy transition at the end of
our term. One of the most important goals we hope to accomplish is one of better bookkeeping. Bookkeeping
is one of the most important aspects of the kitchen and has lacked in recent years. With these goals in mind
we expect a smoothly and efficiently run kitchen.
Fraternally yours,
James McCleery '92

\r\nEDITOR'S
NOTE
Brothers,
Over the past year there has been a lot of changes at Pi Iota. If you have not had an
opportunity to visit the house recently, We encourage you to make a special effort to make
it to Homecoming on Saturday, October 6th. Also, as Brother Detora has mentioned, this
would be an excellent time to come back and meet with old friends.
We would Like to take this opportunity to thank the Graduate Brothers for all they
have done for us. Alumni support has become stronger, helping the chapter to excel to its
goals and accomplish tasks that could not have been undertaken without graduate help and
guidance. It has again been proven that Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone. A
special thanks is extended to those Graduate Brothers who helped out at a recent work party
and to the Graduate Brothers who took time out of their schedules to come to the house to
talk with the Undergraduate Chapter about their careers.
A new award was established at Pi Iota last Pig Dinner. This award is the Walter E.
Knapp Distinguished Service Award. The first two recipients of this award, which
recognizes outstanding Graduate participation, were Shawn Bernard '88 and Mark Macaulay
'89.
An American flag that was flown over the capitol under the direction of President
Reagan was given as a gift by Karl Penney '28 to the chapter. It is proudly displayed in the
foyer. It is truly an honor to have received such a gift. Thank you.
We would like to thank all of you who took the time to fill out and return to us the
"Graduate Brother Questionnaire". You are encouraged to keep us up to date so that we can
keep your brothers informed. If anyone has a picture that they would like to see in the Pi
Ides, please send us a reprint and we will try to include it in the next issue. We have spent
a lot of time working on this issue of the Pi Ides, and hope that it helps to keep you
informed. We would hke to hear your input, please send us your comments or suggestions.
Hopefully the format of the past two issues will set a new trend for the look of the Pi Ides.
