The 1989 Norris Pig Dinner was held at the Comhusker Plaza
on Friday, October 21. This year, as always, held the same tradi
tions as they did way back in 1894 when Frank Norris sent his
desires to be at the Pig Dinner with brothers in the form of the
first Exiles Toast. This year's privilege went to Steve Luby ('91)
as he fluently brought into focus the true meaning of the Pig Din
ner: A gathering of brothers to share their bond of friendship
and fraternity that lasts a lifetime.
Our keynote speaker for the evening was John Binning ('51).
John's long list of accomplishments certainly preceded him and
he was well prepared to give a speech. But, as John put it, "I
had mixed emotions about being the speaker because I always
thought the reason brothers came to the Pig Dinner was to see
and talk to old friends, and not listen to a lecture." But he felt
John concluded by saying, "The principles our fraternity is
founded on taught me and gave me an opportunity to learn. They
have been the solid foundation to which I owe my successes. Truly,
Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone."
A number of awards were presented to the brothers for
various achievements. David Bauer ('91) received, for the second
year in a row, the award for highest intramural involvement. Also,
for the second year in a row, Kevin Larsen ('90) received the award
for the highest scholarship achievement(4.0) and Gary Friedman
('91) was presented the award for greatest involvement in cam
pus activities.
Although the attendance to this year's Pig Dinner was not
as high as expected, we have taken measures to alleviate the com
that this gave him "a unique opportunity to stress the teaching
munication problem and give a greater advanced notice to the
graduates so that next year's Pig Dinner will have S greater
principles that Phi Gamma Delta is dedicated." John outlined

those principles as being: Unity, Discipline, Excellence, Tolerance,

community and others. John also stressed that to achieve these
principles you must use your resources and that making decisions
about how to use those resources can greatly affect your success
in later life.

Campus Activities
Intramurals
In the past, the Lambda Nu chapter of Phi Gamma Delta has
always been a great supporter of campus activities, always striving
for that facet of universiality which is attained by extra-curricular
The Triple Crown is the most distinguished intramural award
that can be won at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In the
participation. The tradition is being carried on in every area to the
fullest extent with both the new pledge class and the active chapter.
Just recently Bro
ther Gary Friedman '91
was presented with an
award for campus ac
tivity at the annual Norris Pig Dinner. Gary has
history of this University, this has only been done three times. Two
of which were won by the Lambda Nu chapter in 1986 and 1988.
Last year, compared to the previous, was a little down. In order
to get us back to the level of excellence we are used to, I have
generated more enthusiasm toward intramurals throughout the
house. The members have responded well to meet this as shown
in our accomplishments so far this year.
To name a few of the events we have done well in would be
been active in the Fran
as follows: Badminton, Softball, Football(of course). Archery, Place
Kicking, and Swimming. So far this year we have already won two

events, Intertube Water Basketball and Golf. This has put us in

tions at the Oregon State game. FUI, thanks to a superb chapter
turnout, once again collected more than any other fraternity. FUI
also took the Delta Gamma "Anchor Splash" by storm, and has
been doing an exceptional job in intramurals. Let it be added that
our annual "Honey Sunday" philanthropy advanced upon us
November 12.
The fall pledge class has already jumped into the campus in
volvement game, sponsoring the first annual FUI RASTA ROAST
(reggae and weenies), which was open to the public. In addition,
the industrious pledges are all on some campus committee, and
are in the process of planning a pledge class philanthropy.
The outlook for the 1989-90 college year is strong. Campus
involvement is just one key way to make it even stronger. By work
ing with our campus and community. Phi Gamma Delta will con
tinue to be the best, as it always has been.

Brothers:
Parent's Day
Greetings from the undergraduate chapter of Lambda Nu.
Although the fall semester is but half spent for the brothers here
at Lambda Nu, the accomplishments have been outstanding. I
believe the ground work has been, and is being, laid not only for
great success in the present year, but for many years to come. I
feel it is my obligation and pleasure to inform you as brothers that
the Lambda Nu chapter is not only on the mend, but with the help
of the national fraternity, the Trustees, and the local graduates,
is accomplishing new forms of excellence!
The hard work of Peter Satori and Craig Davis, the '89 Sum
mer Rush Chairman, brought Lambda Nu a new pledge class of
25 that is as diverse and promising as any of the past. These, along
with the undergraduate actives, have completed two very successful
philanthropic activities, one of which gained us local newspaper
recognition and praise by the Lancaster County Red Cross. The
chapter won the 1989 Delta Gamma Anchor Splash swim meet and
is currently one of the top three houses in intramurals.
Early in the semester the Chapter was visited not only by our
It was 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, and the final touches
were being put on an event which had been in planning for weeks.
The dining room was crowded with tables and decorated to the
hilt with ornaments setting the mood for the 1989 Phi Gamma Delta
Parent's Day.
Parents came from all over the state and farther away to visit
the Fiji house and their sons. The brunch was served from
10:30-12:00. There were a large variety of foods served such as
turnovers, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage. During
the brunch, guests were entertained by several speakers, first of
which was Kevin Larsen '90, our House President. Kevin introduced
the various committee members who then explained the objectives
of their committees and what they do for the house.
After the different committee heads spoke, our housemother,
Mary Jane VanBerg talked about what she thought the different
house committees' responsibilities were and how intramurals help

suggestions of these individuals, many positive changes have occured here at Lambda Nu; the most important of which is a new
Our graduate speaker was Walt Stevensen '51. He spoke of
the strides the house is taking to become more active on campus
and how he thought the house was looking to our future to better

The last event during the brunch was a videotaped interview
documentation and structure system for the Cabinet and its com
mittees. It will enable not only easier planning and implementa
tion of current activities, but will help dramatically in Cabinet and
committee change-over in the future. A yearly calendar and report
will be published and distributed to the national fraternity, the local
intrafratemity council, and the Trustees.
The Lambda Nu undergraduate chapter is very excited and
thankful for the encouragement and support of its graduate
brothers, along with the Board of Trustes and the national frater
nity. We encourage you as a graduate to get involved! If you have

1989 Pledge Class
We attended our first Norris Pig Dinner. It was fun—we had
Dear Uncle Alumn,
How are you? I've been very busy with pledge activities, as I'm
sure you can easily understand.
I'm getting along great with both the active chapter and my
pledge class.
Time seems as if it flies by, we've already been in college for
eight weeks and accomplished a whole lot.
October has been a busy month for my pledge class. We have
had two car washes, a barbecue, and sold t-shirts for fund raisers.
We have also been trying very hard in both intramural softhall and
flag football. Hopefully we will win both tournaments.
On November first our pledge class left for its "Sneak." We
traveled to Colorado and stayed at the Fiji house there. Although
there were many problems, no one got caught and the "Sneak"
was a huge success. It made us all depend on each other and 1
believe we all got a little hit closer to one another. The only thing
that could have been better would have been a Husker victory.
the chance to talk with alumni who were once pledges. It was very
interesting to see how—even with great age differences—the ac
tive chapter and the alumni get along as if best friends. It made
us all realize how important Phi Gamma Delta is and how Phi Gam
ma Delta is involved with you in life beyond college.
Everyone has been concentrating on scholarship. I think we
will have a very high class GPA. The mandatory study hours help
a great deal and they make us realize how important scholarship is.
I'll tell you something, I've only known the guys in my pledge
class a short time but I feel as if they are my closest friends. When
someone needs help in something, you know you have a house
full of people who can and will help.
Well Uncle, I hate to end this letter, but I really need to go
study. We hope that you will come to visit the house and give us
a chance to get to know you better.
Sincerely,
David Codr '93

Graduate Profile
Brothers:
This issue the Alumnus profile is on Jim McFarland 70. Jim,
who grew up in North Platte, was a second semester pledge who
was also active in Big Red football. While playing for the Huskers,
Jim played tight-end setting records for total number of passes
caught at that position, which still stands at 30.
1970 was a busy year for Jim. He was married to Linda Preston
of Wayne, Nebraska, and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.
After five years of professional football at St. Louis, Jim played one
year for the Miami Dolphins. Jim's education continued at UNL,
receiving a Master's in Sociology in 1974, while teaching high school
in Malcolm, Nebraska. From 1977 to 1980 Jim attended Cornell
Law School in Ithica, New York, receiving a J.D. in 1980.
Jim's law career returned him to Lincoln working as an
dissociate with Crosby, Guenzel, Davis, Kessner and Kuester from
1980 to 1982. Presently Jim is practicing law with Bums and

Grenier, P.C., and has done so since 1982. In 1986, Jim was ap
pointed to Lincoln's 18th Legislative district by Brother and former
Governor Bob Kerrey.
Jim keeps busy by running, playing racquetball, reading and
playing chess, not to mention raising his two children, Doug, 18,
and Jamie, 13. Jim is currently considering running for governor.

Fall Kickoff Dinner
Gary Friedman '91 with Lanett Blum serves dinner at the soup
On September 27, 1989, the Omaha Graduate Chapter had
its annucil Fall Kickoff dinner. Despite a low turnout, because of
William A. Martin (Executive Director of Phi Gamma Delta) at the
Lambda Nu chapter, the dinner wcis a great success. It was held
at Anthony's and a great prime rib was served.
Some of the graduates went all the way back as 1929 and some
as recent as 1986. Besides Lambda Nu graduates, there was a hand
kitchen.
ful of graduates from various other Phi Gam chapters across the
nation. The speaker was former linebacker coach John Melton. He
was very humorous and it was really entertaining to hear him speak.
The most impressive scene was seeing the brothers from past
and present reminiscing about old times. Steve Luby '91, Dave Carl
'91, and 1 really enjoyed being there and wish more brothers could
have made it. A lot of thanks needs to be given to Jeff Moran and
Jim Sacoman for their time in setting the dinner up.

Our records show that the following people have outstanding
bills of more than $10. Individually this does not seem like much,
however, the total is quite high. To give you a little perspective,
the total outstanding is approximately the amount that we budget
for summer. The house this year, as always, is in dire need of money
and your cooperation is greatly needed, and would be greatly
appreciated.
