PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
As we prepare to conclude the academic year and
ready ourselves for the departure of our senior class, I
must congratulate this strong group of men for their
assistance throughout a difficult transitional period for
the brotherhood of Zeta Deuteron. They have lived
through the tragic death of a fellow Brother and a three
year struggle to rebuild the chapter house but their spirits
always remained high. Even more importantly, I must
acknowledge the financial support ofour house corpora
tion under the direction of Edward Bishop, 68, Chip
Chew, '68, as well as the rest of the graduate Brothers
who have donated their time and funds for the continua
tion of our chapter at Washington and Lee.
As a result of the last few rebuilding years, we have
raised ournumbers back to a total of forty-five members
with ten astute Pledges. Our Pledges have gone beyond
all expectations in their academic prowess and attained
the highest grade point among the Pledges of all the
fraternities with a 3.2average. Ourintramurals have come

Stanley Hall, '89 will take charge of Fiji Islands which
will be held on April 25. Our initiation is scheduled for
May 2 under the direction of Andrew Hermer and
Thomas Skeen, both members of the class of '89. Alumni
weekend has been organized as the official rededication
ceremony and the house corporation has planned
numerous festivities for the entire affair. Once again, I
urge every graduate Brother to attend the Norris Pig
Dinner on Friday, May 8 in order to see the continued
efforts of both the undergraduates and the entire legion
of our alumni.
The eyesof the administration as well as our graduates
have been on us for the entire year and I feel that our
outlook for the future can only be positive. You, the
alumni, have supported us and hopefully by this effort
our strength will increase even more in the future. The
entire chapter looks forward to seeing you on May 8 and
any other time that you may be in Lexington.

and we are currently ranked fourth among the Greeks.
The concerted efforts of the Brothers in the academic and
athletic concentrations have brought us back into favor
of the administration.
The contractor has completed the entire house and
the landscape will be accomplished in the next two weeks
thereby providing the finishing touches to a beautiful
home which, by the way, has been included in the
Women's Garden Club tour in April. From the spiral
staircase to the newly completed basement, the house is
a gem to lookat and I must urge all thegraduate Brothers
to visit Lexington and see the new structure. January 5
marked thereopening of our kitchen andmeals have been
superior under the direction of our housemother, Mrs.
Vogt.
We have enacted a number of new policies this year
concerning open parties and drinking and I feel that by
taking the initiative in such matters we can only
strengthen the entire fraternity system at W&L. As
always, spring term will be an eventful time for the entire
chapter and the new cabinet under the leadership of

A FIJI TRADITION
Dr. Hess, The Mouche, Holbs, G-bo, Spewee, Chief,
Duper, Bamlet, and Hymie—all these nicknames can be
associated with six years of FIJI history at 25 West
Washington Street, Apartment B; the Dive. Apartment B
gained its name, the Dive, in the school year 1981-82when
the first group of FIJI'S entered her doors. The name was
decided upon because of Apartment B's prehistoric ap
pliances, the mouldy shower stall, and the occupant's
special relationship with the local cockroaches. Whenold
stories of the Dive were being discussed. Dive alumnus
Jim Hess stated, "The Dive wasn't that bad." Each suc
cessive year since has brought new memories to the Dive.
The year of G-bo, Spewee, and Chief can be remembered
by toothbrush wars. Plan B, maggots in the sink and total
domination of the Style House. This year is the sixth an

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
"Excellence Off The Court And On"
While tending to academic and fraternity obligations,
the Brothers of Zeta Deuteron have always supported
athletics at Washington and Lee. Our Brothers help fill
the rosters of seven intercollegiate sports at the Univer
sity. Now we honor one of ouroest student athletes, senior
Jefferson Harralson, who has contributed four years to
niversary of FIJI habitation at the Dive and has ushered
in a new age at Apartment B. Occupants Phil Dupont,
Doug Franzese, and Jamie Gaucher are actuallyconcern
ed about the appearance of the Dive. When asked why
they wished to be a part of the "FIJI TRADITION
Doug replied, "The cushioned toilet seat was a major fac
tor" in his decision. Even with a new era at the Dive,
some things will never change; the tilted Van Gogh,
WRONG CHEESE, and the Dive's reputation as the best
"stop" in town.

the Generals basketball program, while majoring in
business administration and holding office in our chapter.
Jefferson Harralson, affectionately known as "JBone" because of his tall, skinny build, as a co-captain
led the cagers to a 15-9 record including their biggest win
of the season over sixteenth-ranked Emory and Henry
College. Harralson was the leading scorer and rebounder
for the Generals this season, averaging 21 points and 8
rebounds per contest. Harralson also added 50 assists and
nearly as many steals while paving his way to a first team
All-ODAC selection as well as the Most Valuable Player
Award for the Generals. Jefferson will be remembered
most for surpassing the 1,000 point mark and becoming
Washington and Lee's eleventh all-time scorer.
Despite his many personal accomplishments, Har-
ralson^^^its^he friends he has made and the enjoyment
of the sport as the highlights of his career. This team
oriented attitude got him elected as co-captain two
straight years. His leadership was also noted in the frater
nity as well. Jefferson held the office of treasurer during
his junior year. His job was made more difficult by the
fact that we had no chapter house in which to work out
of.
Jefferson has certainly made his mark at Washington
and Lee and we are proud to say that he is a FIJI. All
of his Brothers wish him good luck and continued suc
cess in the future.

\r\nOUT-OF-HOUSE SPIRIT
Having had time to settle into our new house the
Brothers of Phi Gamma Delta are now turning their ef
forts toward the many community responsibilities that
all fraternities must deal with. Living in a highly residen
tial area makes our task a bit more difficult than that
of the other fraternities at Washington and Lee. There
fore, we must concentrate more on the duty of being con
siderate neighbors. In view of this task we are now begin

FIJIs IN SPORTS
In 1987, FIJI Brothers continue to display leadership
in the Washington and Lee intercollegiate, club, and in
tramural athletic programs.
Jefferson "J-Bone" Harralson, '87 and Rob "Robbo" Spencer, '87 are two important members of the
General's basketball squad. J-Bone is once again cocaptain and a floor leader, and this season scored his
1,000th career point. Robbo, a crowd favorite, provides
off-the-bench inspiration for the Generals. Both players
were instrumental in W&L's defeat of Emory and Henry,
who was ranked I6th in Division III.
Representing FIJI on the indoor track team are cocaptain Thomas "Chuke" Murray, '87, Jim Ambrosini,
'89, and Jon Sheinberg, '90. Chuke has emerged as one
of W&L's premiere shot putters, tossing the shot 48'4"
(only 5" short of the school record) to win 1st place in
the Lynchburg Relays. Prior to that spectacular throw,
Chuke had placed 4th against Division I opponents at the
Virginia Military Institute Relays. Jim is also regarded
as an excellent thrower and thepairarelooking forward
to topping the season off with a 1, 2 finish at the
O.D.A.C. finals. Sheinberg has made an impressive
ninga plan to offer our time and services to the neighbors
by undertaking such endeavors as running simple errands
and performing basic cleaning jobs around their yards.
These chores are particularly appreciated by our elderly
neighbors, and gives the Brothers a chance to meet the
residents in our vicinity. The long term goal of this plan
is to let our neighbors become acquainted with us and
to allow Phi Gamma Delta help make the corner of
Jackson and Preston Streets be the best in Lexington.
The Brothers also feel that we can offer services to
worthy organizations. We propose to hold our annual
lOO-inning softball game for the Cancer Society in the
spring. Last year's effort raised $250 with most of that
coming from donations from the Brothers. This year we
feel that we can surpass that mark with pledges from
alumni and also from other fraternities on campus.
We feel that our Chapter is heading in a positive direc
tion by trying to improve community relations Having
a Chapter House is something new to our Brothers and
Pledges so any ideas that you may have on improving
community relations would be welcome .

showing in his first season, running in both the 40 and
400 meter races.
Yin LaManna, '87, Jim Kelly, '89, Rob Vienneau,
'89, and Stew Funkhouser, '88 are not only key players
for the W&L Hockey Club, three of them serve as its of
ficers. Yin, at center, serves as the Club's president, while
Jim plays at wing and performs the duties of treasurer,
and Stew also plays at wing while acting as vice-president.
The three officers are jointly responsible for organizing
a schedule against the opposing teams, choosing team
members, purchasing uniforms, and rentingice facilities.
The FIJI Brothers have demonstrated a great deal of
competitiveness in the intramural program, currently
ranking 9th in the standings. The rank should continue
to move upward as we enter our two strongest sports.
The Brothers are looking forward to retaining our
volleyball champion status, as well as winning the cham
pionship in basketball.

EDITOR'S NOTE
Dear Brothers,
I hope this newsletter finds you all well. I also hope
that you will find it interesting as well as informative.
It is designed to keep you abreast of chapter news and
graduate information.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each
of the alumni that filled out and returned our alumni up
date form. Your cooperation was greatly appreciated and
your input is welcomed. Several of you wished for us to
retain our house mother, rest assured that we have no
intention of having her leave. She is a tremendous asset
not only to us but to the fraternity system as a whole at
Washington and Lee.
All of your suggestions are taken to heart and
although we can't possibly respond to them all they are
welcomed. Of course feel free to continue your sugges
tions at any time throughout the year. Once again the
Brothers thank you for your support and invite you to
return to Lexington in May for the Alumni Reunions and
Brad Preston, '88, Francee Moore
for our Annual Norris Pig Dinner.
