\r\nPresidents Message
Brothers,
Seasons Greetings from Rho Alpha.
Chapter Spirits are very high this Holiday
Season. With only three weeks of winter
quarter gone, much has been accomplished.
Th e Cabinet has been leading, the Brothers
have been rushing, the Pledges have been
pledging, the students have been studying,
and everyone has been p a r t y i n g . Hopes are
high for the success of the chapter in the
next few months and into the future. These
are not empty hopes, but strong hopes
backed by actions.
The first great accomplishment of the
chapter was our rush this quater. Rush
Chairman Colin Winchester along with Rush
God Wayne Ciccolo were key figures in this
success. Eight men were pledgedbefore
leaving on Winter break. One man left early
and could not make the ceremony. As soon
as we pin him, he will bring the AT PLedge
Class to a total of nine!
Another subtle accomplishment is the
energy and e n t h u s i s a s m brewing within the
walls of the Chapter House. It's one thing to
come together on weekends and have high
spirits, but to sustain them every day is a
different task. All the pressures, problems,
and difficulties which students have to
face for the first time in their lives have
dampened spirits in the past, but true comradery coupled with a bright f u t u r e has
given the brotherhood a great boost.
So, you might ask, "What are they going
to do with all that energy and enthusiasm at
the FIJI House?" Well, let me tell you. We
have been fixing up the house, it looks great.
We're p l a n n i n g to have several brotherhood
events that include things like a sledding
trip, and a "Brunch/Movie" Weekend.
Wer're also planning a social service project
where we'll auction off some academic
deans to raise money for charity. And what
about these FANTASTIC NEWSLETTERS? To
top it all off, we have planned a trip to
Daytona Beach, Florida. Where we will be
situated on the Boardwalk. And as always,
while we have been having fun weare
spending time on scholarship also.

DOMINATION! It was all FIJI at our first
i n t r a m u r a l basketball game this quarter as
we beat Pi Kappa Alpha 52-35. Brothers
Rich Lloyd, Kevin McGuire, Jim Burlant, Pete
McDevitt (then pledge) and pledges Brian
Young, Pat Reilly and others showed that we
can conquer all! All aspects of our game
were working-fast breaks, blocked shots
and 3-point plays, behind a swarm of enthusiasm, led us to victory. Leading scorers
in the Game were Brian Young (13), Kevin
McGuire (9), and Pat Reilly (6). We wish to
thank all those who came out to cheer us on
to victory and hope that there will be continued support in the future.

1987 - 88 Cabinet
Due to the fact that Brother Ken Larson,
our newly elected Historian, had to leave
school suddenly, Mike Maret has been
nominated and elected as the Chapter
Historian for the Remainder of the School
Year. All the brothers of Rho Alpha wish
the best of luck to Brother Larson in all
his endeavors and hope that he will continue to display the u n i q u e qualities that
he posseses to all he encounters. We'll
miss you Ken!
The quality of these fine men is a brillant
Brother Maret, who recently returned to
example of the outstanding potential of our
school
afer several years, has promised to
fraternity and of the good things to come in
increase our chapters awareness in the
the f u t u r e .
Ritual and bring the Chapter Tone to one
of the Highest Points its ever been. The
Brothers would like to thank Brother
Maret for the fantastic job he's already
done and that we know he will continue
to do in the future.
CONGRATULATIONS
\r\nHouse Improvements
The new spirit of e n t h u s i a s m that has
been sweeping over the Chapter was clearly
evident over T h a n k s g i v i n g Break as two
Brothers, John Grady (AO) and Kevin
McGuire (AP), gave a large portion of their
free time to improve some things in the
c h a p t e r house t h a t were in need of renovation and repair. Some of the home improvements included p a i n t i n g the kitchen and
downstairs bedroom, patching holes, refinishing the basement stairs, and sanding and
staining the living room hallway. John, who
took over as House/Finance Chairman at the
beginning of Winter Quarter this year, is
also responsible for p a t c h i n g the holes in the
walls and the ceiling that were left by the
installation of our new heating unit in the
house. The brothers hope that by showing
their e n t h u s i a s m and great concern for the
appearance of the house, t h a t the graduate
brothers will c o n t i n u e their great support
t h a t will have paid for our Chapter house by
Mid 1988.
The new Education committee that was
started in the middle of last quarter has
instituted some new changes in the Fraternity that will be seen in the early part of
1988. In response to some brothers "oop's"
grades last quarter, the committee has set
up m a n d a t o r y s t u d y hours in the l i b r a r y
and quiet hours in the house that all brothers will observe. The committee is also
considering offering other "incentives" to
the brothers w i t h the best grades in the
upcoming quarter. There is even a friendly
little competition between brother Steve
Klosky and brother John "Was that my
alarm?" Grady concerning grades.
The
newly updated "Koofer", old test, file will
also be made available to all the brothers in
order t h a t they m i g h t be able to get better
prepared for their tests. Hopefully, with a
little hard work, by the end of this quarter
we will be back on top of the all m e n ' s average here at Virginia Tech.
Some of the f u t u r e improvements that
are p l a n n e d by the brothers and the House
Corporation include an 8 Foot privacy fence
in the back yard, new insulation and flooring in the attic, remodeling the kitchen
appliances (especially a badly needed new
freezer), and f i x i n g the the basement floor.
Other i m p r o v e m e n t s have also been suggested and prioritized by the House Corporation and the House/Finance Committee
and will be looked at in the coming year.

\r\nRUSH
Message Cont.
Rush this Quarter has been the best ever!
Themes like "Coat And Tie" and "Casino
Night" brought more people to our rushes
t h a n any other on campus! Rush Chairman
Colin Winchester, was in charge of and organized events that led to the pledging 10
good men and there is still a possibility for
more. This is one of our largest pledge
classes in a few years and some of our finest
men. Colin was able, for the first time in a
while, to motivate the brothers for Rush. He
invited speakers to the house to talk on
r u s h i n g techniques, t h o u g h t out new and
exciting ways of presenting our fraternity to
the campus and caused a lot of excitement
within the brotherhood. Colin and the rest
of the rush committee deserve a great deal
of applause for the dedication and enthusii s m they displayed over the last few weeks,
C h e w i n g the true spirit of bur fraternity.
So, this brings me to the end of my
first little article. Please feel free to stop
by anytime your in town. Also, please
try to make it up (or down) for Pig Dinner Sat. May 7,1988. Archon Secretary,
Brother Peter O. Clauss will be the featured speaker. We have cooked up some
special suprise events for that weekend.
Even if you can't make it, drop us a line
at the house and let us know w h a t your
doing, we'd love to hear from all of you.
Fraternally,
Stephen Klosky
