Message
As I write this, I realize that
the predictions I made regarding the
chapter are coming true; 1987 is definitely looking to be a banner year
for Rho Alpha. One of the major
highlights of the cabinet's first
quarter in office was the passage of
two proposals designed to reduce our
liability during parties. First,
four brothers are to serve as "lifeguards" at all parties and social
functions. These lifeguards are required to stay sober for the duration
of the event; they are also required
to give rides home to those who are
too intoxicated to drive. The other
piece of legislation passed was that
alcohol is no longer served past 2
a.m. at any social function.
In addition, the parties are shut down at
2:30 a.m. We haven't had any problems implementing either of these
policies and there haven't been any
real complaints.
Another major triumph for the
quarter was that legislation was
passed requiring all brothers to be
active on a committee. This is in
response to the apathy which has been
plaguing our chapter.
On another note, the P.R. committee
received a boost, with "Gullible" John
Grady being appointed vice chairman.
I can tell you that he is really dedicated to making Phi Gam's name among
the best known on campus. (Feel free
to ask John how he got his new name
when you see him.)
Finally, Lin Leftwich ('88) resigned from his post as Recording
Secretary. His replacement is Roel
Cuejilo ('88). With things going the
way they are, I can say I'm damned
proud to be a Phi Gam!!!

House Corp.
The House Corporation has take-rr
some additional steps to make the
chapter house a safer and more secure
place to live. As most of you know,
$2,500 was spent in the Fall to upgrade the electrical wiring to handle
the load generated by up to ten
Brothers living in the house. During
Winter quarter, approximately $650
was spent on the following items:
- 2 replacement windows (basement)
- 1 replacement door (basement)
- 4 fire extinguishers
- 3 smoke alarms
Additionally, the House Corp. has
asked the House Chairman to conduct a
monthly safety audit, following a
checklist that we will provide. The
House Corp. will audit quarterly as
well. House Corporation Vice Presiden
Rick Gass should be recognized for the
excellent job done on his review and
recommendations on house safety.
Looking to the future, the next
major expenditure we face is the ^_^-loon mortgage payment due on August
13, 1987. Currently, we are approximately $2,000 short of the funds required for this payment. I feel confident that we will be able to raise
the money we need by Pig Dinner via
donations and additional bond purchases. More on fund raising and
additional planned house upgrades/
improvements in the next BCA newsletter.
Fraternally,
John A. Adamo (Chi)

\r\nBCA
So far this year, the BCA has had
meetings in Blacksburg. We have
plans for two more: one on March 14th
with Field Secretary Dave Marino and
one on May 2nd (Pig Dinner). The
emphasis of the March 14th meeting
will be rush. The chapter needs to
have another good Spring rush. Hopefully, good graduate support can be a
big factor.
Another topic for discussion at the
March 14th meeting will be dues and
fees. High initiation fees and high
dues are causing the chapter to lose
pledges and Brothers. Every year the
chapter loses one or two Brothers and
some pledges because of money. We
will address this problem in March and
see if we can come up with a way to
alleviate or eliminate it.
There are 11 people on the BCA and
I am glad to say that most of them
make it to every meeting. Some of
them have better that an 8 hour drive.
I believe this is a good example of
he st^ng graduate commitment at Rho
—Alpha. I hope this graduate commitment will continue to prosper in the
future.4
