Dear Brother In Omega:
In conjunction with our annual dues appeal I think it inportimt to
briefly explain the role dues and contributions play.
Our main source of income is rent from the chapter; after deducting
essential expenses (real estate taxes, insurance etc.) we have approx
imately $900 left to spend on house ii^rovements. I think we all
realize that in the future "538" will eventvially have to be relocated.
However, in the short run there is much that can be done. Dues and
contributions can be added to the above siim for the many physical
improvements which we feel are necessary.
This past year we added some new furniture, new bedding, a new roof,
made extensive plumbing repairs, and had the pool table recovered. At
the present time we are having two new ceilings installed and struct
ural repairs made. We hope that your contribution can help pay for
these and other in?>rovements. It wooild be greatly appreciated if you
would help us by sending a check made out to "Omega Association."
Fraternally yours,
Malcolm B. Sargent

Dear Alvunni Brother,
This will be our last Broadway FIJI for this
school year.
I feel that you might like a clarification
of the actions taken by the Omega Brotherhood during the
recent turn of events at Columbia,
United, the Brotherhood took an active and positive
role in the activities of the "Hajority Coalition", In
jacket and tie ,,, a clear distinction from the strikers, we
manned our positions around Low Library in order to show
the administration that the overwhelming majority did NOT
approve of the disruption of the school by the b.D.S. In
fact the front page of the Lew York Daily Lews of Monday,
April 29th had a picture of six men standing on line for
the Majority Coalition ,,, they just happened all to be
OMEGA FIJI'S,
All during this time , for about a week, we
kept the chapter house open for free coffee and donuts to
all the Policemen off duty around campus. We were the only
house to do this and had well over 300 of lew York's Finest
as Fiji guests. Unfortunately another fraternity served
coffee and permitted their house for the use of "visiting"
strikers.
Another interesting bit of information is that
the strikers, both well financed and organized, have been
using the Alumni and Federally supported Cit Council,
(Citizen Council) equipment to keep the campus in ferment,
S^ile we thought the campus had cooled off, in
fact at this very moment Hamilton Hall has again been retaken
by the radical members of S.D.E. It remains to be seen
what will happen next. Basically there are no more classes,
and most students are receiving pass/fail grades.
It appears
some form of discipline will be forthcoming - in relation to
this I would like to thank all those Alumni who sent the
Brotherhood letters of support with the reassurance that
they would also convey their feelings to President Kirk
and
the Columbia University Administration,
I would personally like to thank George bternad, our
Section Chief for the timely donation of a case of MAXWELL
House Coffee and Brother John Stcaves who time and time again
has provided for the publication of our Broadway Fiji,
- continued -
\r\nIn other house matters, Carpentry repair work is
nearing completion and with it a special debt of thanks goes
to our Graduate brothers of the OMEGA ASSOCIATIOls, brother
Frank MacKain and Malcolm and Bruce Sargent who have pro
vided the funds and assistance for the work.
More brothers
have joined up in our "BUCK OF THE MONTH CLUB";
I hope
that all our alumni brothers will become LOYAL OMEGA FIJI's,
thereby continuing the modernization of the Chapter House,
Chapter Treasurer Paul Werner and Historian Don
Schenk will accompany me to the EKKLESIA this summer in
the Grand Bahamas,
A number of other brothers will also
be present,
Next fall we will be havingfive Cocktail Parties
after all the Home Varsity Football Games, Remember these
dates: Sept, 28 with Lafayette: HOMECOMIIG Oct. 12 with
Harvard: Oct 26 with Rutgers.
Nov. 23 with Brown,
Nov. 2 with Cornell and
Hope to see all of you at the
game and then afterwards at the Chapter House for some
refreshment.
Please feel free to write me at the Chapter House
this summer on any recommendations you may have for the
brotherhood for next year,
i'iay I extend my best wishes and those of the brother
hood for an enjoyable suuraner to all and again speclAI thanks
to those brothers who came to our Chapter's support during
the recent turmoil on Campus,
I Remain Fraternally Yours,

PIG DINNER SUCCESE
Despite the disttirbances that forced cancellation
of University classes this spring, Omega held its annual
Norris Pig Dinner on May IJth at the King's Table in John
Jay Hall, Over 25 graduate brothers attended, making the
dinner a success to compare with the Centennial celebration
of 1966.
James iMugent '48 not only aided Dinner Chairman
James Hoyce'69 in organizing the event, but also donated
this year's pig, dohn oteeves '45 was our speaker for the
evening and his remarks concerning the physical placement
of the College in the city were of particular interest.
Tentatively, our plans for next year place 1969's
in February. V/e hope your attendance will make next year's
dinner an even greater success.
\r\nFIJIS 00-CAPTAIII FRSSH^. CRSW
Starting the tradition of Fiji captainship early in
their college careers, Larry Schenk*71 and Fhil Runnel'71
were elected captains of the freshman lightweight crew.
We are proud to say that all the brothers continued rowing
throughout the recent crisis as well as playing an actire
role in trying to restore the campus to a reasonable semblence of a value-free institution dedicated to the pursuit
of intellectual inquiry,
BROSHratS HOHOR^ AT aRARUAIlOR
Dennis Hinno, last year's brother's' received the Gen
eral Dynamics Award in Avaltion. Presently Dennis is at
the U.S. Naval Air Training School in Pensacola, Florida,
Bill Glover was the receipient of the Richard Goodridge Jackson Memorial Prize which is awarded annually to
the member of the Varsity Rowing Squad who attained the
best scholarship record during the previous yeeur. Follow
ing his duties aboard the U.S,S, Canberra, Bill plans to
enroll in Columbia's School of International Affairs,
B(^OB ELECTED TO 0,U.S.0.
Early this spring, in the annuAl school-wide elections
James Boyce'69 was elected to the Columbia University
Student Council. Jim's election takenson added significance
when viewed against the backgroxmd of active politicizing
narmikilyooarried on by the radical element on campus,
ROSBKBLAIt TOURS EUROPE
Ron Rosenblatt'69 is spending most of this siunmer
traveling throughout Europe, Ron's travels have been made
possible by grant he received from the Metropolitan
Museum of Art for the purpose of visting a number of
Gothic Cathedrals,
OMEGA WINS GRAND PRIX RELAY
On June 30 five Omega Fiji's won the General Clinton
Grand yrix Relay Race in the name of Omega of Phi Gamma
Delta and Colimbia Lightweight Crew, This annual Memor
ial Day race on the Susquehanna was unusually exciting
as the Columbia team proved that a standard canoe could
beat a modified racing craft. This accomplishment was
largely the result of Bob Chappla's '68 and Gerry
Botha's '670,'68E outstanding performance against two
professional canoeists who were racing for the Ithica
College team.
\r\nFour new brothers are wearing the Black Diamond
this spring semester; this brings our total to 16 new
brothers for this year. Through all the tuirmoil that has
taken place on Columbia's Campus this spring, our four new
brothers distinguished themselves throughout the crisis and
on May
officially became OMBGA FlJls
These four are;
liichard Schell, '71C, from Wilton, Conn.
Richard Brooker, '7lB, from Westfield, R.Y,
Richard Moss, '7lC, From i\ew 'ilork, I,.Y.
