Dear Brother,
LAUKUTaT*^
I am writing to you today to let you know what is happening to your Chapter.
Over the last few years I have lost touch with you. It's not that I haven't thought
of you, I have,... often. Things seem to keep me occupied. But now it is time to catch
up on what is happening to the Pi Sigma Chapter of Phi G^mma Delta Fraternity.
Currently, the cdiapter is running at a loss. In 1990 we needed to use over $8,000.00
of Pi Sigma's savings to cover operating expenses. The number of undergraduates
has been slowly decreasing as today's young college men realize that fraternities
are no longer a haven for free beer. The current undergraduates are a fine group
of young men, getting the lion's share of good rushees. None the less, the number of
new Phi Gams at Pitt is getting smaller. The Pi Sigma Association derives funds
to operate the House facilities from two sources: undergraduate rents and Graduate
contributions.
Our existence at the University of Pittsburgh is in jeopardy. The other fraternities
on campus have been moved up to the stadium. They live in cement blocks. They
are in worse shape than we are, having fewer new members than we do. They
will probably dlssapear from campus, their houses converted into "Sport Condos"
for the atheletes that bring recognition and media dollars to the university. With
fraternities on campus, it is truly survival of the fittest. When 1 look back on my
experiences with Pi Sigma, I remember us as being the fittest house on campus.
Now, we're struggling to possibly remain the only house on campus.
The one weapon we have to win the war is our Chapter House. It is the authentic
Fraternity House on campus. When people come to FIJI, they all say the same
thing, " You have a really nice house, the nicest one on campus." By keeping our
Chapter facilities in good repair, we will likely be the only fraternity left on campus,
having a monopoly on the men who can be Phi Gams. These men will pay the rent,
but right now we need to pay the bills.
I am requesting that you make a graduate contribution to the Pi Sigma Association
in the amount of $100.00. The first $40.00 will go to purchasing your seat at the
up coming 75th Diamond Pig Dinner. The balance will be deposited into an interest
earning account to be used as working capital for the current and anticipated
expenditures of the House Corporation. Please contribute if you can. With the
summer upon us, this is an ideal time to work on the Chapter facilities, and to
prepare for the Fall Rush. Please do not let this plea from your Chapter go by the
way side. Take it upon yourself to help keep Pi Sigma Number One at PITT!
Fraternally,
Brother Basco
