PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Brothers, once again, I have the pleasure of
informing you of the status of the Rho Phi chapter.
This will be my last opportunity to speak as the
president of the chapter since we are holding
elections in the near future. As I stated in the
Spring issue, we had an extremely busy year and
we went to FIJI Academy with high hopes. On the
way to Ohio State, we reflected on the previous
year.
Preparation and Planning
As soon as the new cabinet took over one year
ago, we came up with our own set of goals to follow
in order to help guide the chapter and have a great
year. At our pledge retreat, the chapter answered
a survey that allowed the cabinet to identify areas
for improvement. Using the results of this survey,
we came up with the "150 Steps to Excellence" our
chapters' pathway to achieving our goals over the
next year. We also reorganized the committee
system to better serve the chapter. In general, we
were determined to stay motivated and keep up our
commitment to improving our scholarship.
Commitment to Excellence
We committed ourselves to excellence in twentysix different areas of fraternity operations including
rush, scholarship and graduate relations. This
commitment was a day to day activity. The brothers
spent many hours studying and working together.
In order to motivate our brothers, we gave out
awards for the brothers who best exemplified the
THE ROSE FIJI
The Rose Fiji is published twice a year by the
Rho Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Indiana. It is
intended for the enjoyment of graduate brothers,
parents, friends, and Fijis everywhere.

Five Values and public recognition was given to
those who excelled in their academics. We had
successfully completed 50 of our 150 Steps by
summer and we have now completed 113 of them.
This fall we targeted rush as a major focal point for
the chapter. With last year's class only numbering
fifteen, we needed a large pledge class this year.
Throughout the Fall, rush was on the brothers'
minds. Everyone put in a lot of hard work and spent
many hours meeting the rushees. We tried a couple
new rush activities, such as go-cart racing and
miniature golf. Everyone who attended had a great
time.
Rewards
Our hard work and commitment to our goals
paid off. We had one of the best years in our
chapter's history. We were above the all-mans
average for the first time in several years. At FIJI
Academy, we were pleasantly surprised by
winning several awards. We won the Owen Cup
for the most improved scholarship. We placed third
in the Brightman Award for graduate relations. The
biggest uprise was an honorable mention in the
Cheney Cup competition which is awarded to the
best all-around chapter (this puts us in the top nine
of one hundred and twenty-three chapters). We
also received a John Templeton McCarty award for
the fifth consecutive year and a certificate of
academic achievement.
Our efforts in rush also paid off. We took twentynine impressive young men into our chapter as
pledges. We have only lost two, one because of
his grades and one because he is transferring to the
Colorado School of Mines and we know he will
make a fine addition to the Gamma Kappa chapter
there.
Overall, this past year, the Rho Phi chapter has
had a stellar performance. We learned that there
are several important focus areas in a good chapter.

NEW OFFICERS ELECTED
Dear Brothers,
It is my pleasure to greet you as the newly elected President of the Rho
Phi chapter. On December 9, 1991, the chapter selected the following brothers
to serve as the other officers:
Luis "Sweet Lou" Franco
Brad Miller
Mike "Law" Lawrence
Kelby "Big Boy" Ridenour
Treasurer
Recording Secretary
Corresponding Secretary
Historian
Since our election, the other new officers and 1 have been engaged in
transition, experiencing "on the job training" with our new positions. Despite
the fact that we have been working together only for a short time, we have
already begun to set a chapter tone aiming for whole-hearted fraternal
association within the chapter. Although we have not yet learned all that
our positions involve, we are all confident that the chapter will continue in
its tradition of exemplifying the finest aspects of Phi Gamma Delta.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to commend the resigning
cabinet for all the hard work they have given to this great fraternity of ours.
Their efforts will be appreciated well into the future. I sincerely hope that
the new cabinet can continue building on the excellent foundation which
they have laid.

GRADUATE CORNER
Pd
Since the beginning of this school
year, Rho Phi has enjoyed the presence
of graduates at various events. At
u
Homecoming, nearly 80 graduates were
in attendance for the variety of weekend
activities. Although the weather the day
of the game was less than ideal for a pic
nic, several graduates and their families
were in attendance for George's Bar-bque sandwiches. On a disappointing
note. Rose lost the game.

The entire chapter would like to thank the follow

to the fact that cash was placed in the collection

that we obtained 27 dynamic and

The Rho Phi intramural teams enjoyed two quite

The football team had only one loss in their season
which was handed to them in the Championship game.
The team ended their season with five wins and one loss.
Intramurals also had some contests with the individual
in mind. Rho Phi was represented by some of its best
runners in the cross country meet and also teams in
the two-on-two beach volleyball tournament. J.B.
Muncie, Doug Sowder, and Scott O'Neil "played in the
sand" for the day of volleyball competition.
Currently, the Fiji athletes are competing on frater
nity and floor teams in bowling, major indoor soccer,
major & minor volleyball, and major & minor basket
ball. Each team hopes to be quite competitive in their
respective leagues.
