25 Years of Excellence
25th ANNUAL
By Tim Harlan '72
March of 1996 will mark the twenty-fifth
FRANK
anniversary of the national chartering of the
FIJIs on the Indiana State campus. Fraternity
members are working this year to make the
anniversary a special occasion for the many
graduate brothers who plan to return for the

The initial group consisted of 16 men who then
took a pledge class of 17. A group of Terre
Haute graduate brothers, who had been instru

house which the colony members refurnished
on weekend trips to Terre Haute during the
summer of 1970. That fall the colony took a
pledge class of 19, bringing the group to a
membership around 50.
After filing a formal petition to charter,
the ISU colony was granted permission by Phi

\r\nThe FutureiExpansion and Internet
Brothers,
There are exciting changes
in store for Indiana and the frater
nity as a whole. Indiana is blessed
to have some of the oldest chapters
in the system. DePauw is 140 years
old this year, Indiana is 135, and
Hanover is not far behind. Wabash
is over 100 years old. Even Purdue
is over 50. The new guys on the
block have been Rose Hulman and
Indiana State founded just 25 years
ago. But think of it, that was a
quarter of a century ago. It's about
time we looked to change that~and
we are.
The fraternity is looking at
three schools in the state for expan
sion possibilities. Expansion visits
have been made (or soon will be) to
the University of Evansville, Ball
State, and Valprasio. The Univer
sity of Evansville is a fairly "hot"
prospect. We are competing with
two other fraternities there. The
other two schools are only in early
exploratory phases.
If anyone has any information
they would like to share with me
about those schools, contact me at
(812) 235-3546 or Keith Henley at
(606) 255-1848. Keith is in charge of
expansion for the fraternity.
The second area of excitement
is something that the founders could
have never comprehended—the
internet. Although the internet has
been around for about thirty years, it

The Next 25 Years
As the Iota Sigma chapter celebrates its 25th
anniversary, it must address the challenges for the
next 25 years.
The chapter has grown for 25 years, but
where does it go from here. In recent years increased
numbers in rush a steady growth in the chapter have
now put the numbers close to 50.
The chapter has begun these issues already.
The Tau Iota Foundation, which is a special account
set up to provide for chapter house improvements,
and the possibility of a new house, is paid by the
undergraduates every semester.
Other changes include the increased aware
ness of the dangers of alcohol. The chapter has
implemented a strict risk mangement program and
will continue to shift the focus from alcohol to
responsibilty.
The chapter will also turn it's attention
towards it's ever increasing gradute brothers. There
are approximatley 350 graduates of the Iota Sigma
Chapter. The chapter is looking for close to ICQ to
attend Pig Dinner. What are you doing March 30?

The Road Less Traveled
A Traveling Consultant's Perspective
'2^0^/Soundeutddo44m, ioadoduf%andifmokiu,.,Rood
I knew I was meant for the road before Headquarters
was out of sight. I had never felt such independence in my
life. I was embarking on the first of my many travels as a
Field Secretary for Phi Gamma Delta. I was ready to take on
the world.
In the past two months, I have loved.. .and cursed
How do you want to be remembered? Taking on this
job, I knew it was a once in a lifetime experience. I com
mitted myself seizing the day. While on the road I have seen
the sun rise at the eastem most point of the United States,
hiked on the Appalachian Trail, ferried across Lake
Champlain, toured New York City on foot, and drove the
roads less traveled.
the road. I have lost sleep, clothes, and sometimes my mind.
I have learned more about myself and others in this short
time than I have in the past twenty-three years. I accepted
this position to give something back to the Fraternity and was
again amazed by the genius of the Greek experience. No
matter how much you put into it; you always get more out of
State, but those things I do regret can never be changed or
taken back. I have made it my mission as a field consultant
to urge brothers to go the extra mile and make the sacrifices
it takes to become successful as and chapter and an indi
it.
vidual.
This column is not intendedto be and will not be a
history of my travels. Rather, it is my perspective on what I
have observed on the road and how it relates to Indiana State,
Greeks, and life in general. Hopefully, it will give you a look
inside the life and mind of a traveling consultant.
i liken the consultant position to Sam Beckett, the
lead character in Quantam Leap. I have three days at a
school to plant the seeds that might change a person or
chapter forever. It can be a desperate feeling knowing there
are only seventy-two hours until I leap again.
In contrast if I help one of my thirty-three chapters
I have few regrets regarding my time at Indiana
In less than sixty days and covering more than four
thousand miles, and I visited almost twenty schools. I
received a crash course in independent living and at the same
time learned to be totally dependent on God, friends, and coworkers. I quickly realized that "no man is an island."
Without the support of those around me, I would be lost. I
I will still have a feeling of disappointment or regret know
ing that there were chapters and individuals who blew me off
or fell between the cracks. The key to the job is to give the
same attention and detail to every chapter; never knowing
feel this is something we all need to understand. You can try
which one will heed my advice.
to move mountains, but without help and friends you will
fail.
Dead Poets Society is one of my favorite movies. I
attempt to apply its theme, Carpe Diem, to my job. While
speaking to chapters, I urge brothers to look at old compos
ites. I tell them these brothers also had dreams and aspira
tions for themselves and the chapter. Odds are, the graduates
in the photographs are not recognized, let alone remembered.
This is the point I am trying to make: life is short.
Your time at college is even shorter. You will leave a legacy
behind you. It is your choice of what the legacy will be. I
see so many students living lives of quiet desperation. It is
easy to do. Blame someone else for your problems. Don't
change because it is "tradition". Cruise through school
because you have the rest of your life to be serious. Your life
can change in the blink of an eye.
or even one brother, it will have made all the difference, but
The moral or theme of my column is: you have only
a limited amount of time at Indiana State. Your legacy is
totally dependent on you. Seize the day!
If I had known now, I would never have said one
bad word about ISU or the Greek system. I have seen many
systems. I can say with a straight face that ours is one of the
best. It may not be the biggest or even the very best. There
may not be a fraternity row or even sorority houses, but for
overall quality I would put the staff, chapters, and the
individuals of Indiana State up against anyone.
Fraternally,
Mike Raisor
