BROTHER MacCACHRAN REMEMBERS
Russell A. MacCachran '45 re
cently sent us the following letter:
"My congratulations to you on the
winter 1996-1997 issue of The Wiji
Fiji. You have done an excellent job
communicating and instilling interest
of alumni in the current activities of
the Alpha Chapter. 1 lookforward to
future issues.
"To stress the importance of such
newsletters, 1yield to the motivation it
inspired in my own communication to
you and, thus, to other brothers ofour
valiant andfondly recalled chapter.
"Although through the interruption
of service during World War 11, I
graduated in the fall of 1947, 1 am
officially known as a member of the
class of 1945. I think this was to re
spect thefact that we arrived on cam
pus in 1941 and to declare a later
graduation year than 1945 would have
implied scholastic inadequacy.
"1 am pleased to hear of the reno
vation (and, thus, respect) ofthe chap
ter house. 1 have visited this house
several times, mostly recently in 1991,
and have enjoyed the classic architec
tures and solidity that is presented. To
put this into perspective, the previous
chapter house on East Wheeling Street
was, to put it bluntly, a fire trap. A
sleeping porch on the secondfloor ac
commodated the sophomores, the
chapter room was in the attic and a
knotted rope hung out ofthe attic win
dow in case there was a fire. So,
gentlemen, appreciate, respect and
maintain your present homel
"1 also applaud your maturity and
accountability in leading the campus
in your alcohol policy. Responsible
Brothers Attend Leadership Academy
From July 24-August 2, Brothers
Grant Ervin '99, Jason Kelecic '99
and Jon Tabacjar'99 attended the 25th
Fiji Leadership Academy at the Inter
national Headquarters in Lexington,
KY. The Fiji Leadership Academy is
held in opposite years from the
Ekklesia, and it brings brothers from
various chapters around the United
States and Canada together to discuss
ideas and share experiences from their
respective chapters.
The academy was conducted at both
the Headquarters in Lexington and at
Miami University of Ohio in Oxford,
OH,just north of Cincinnati. The five
main points of concentration for the
meetings were recruitment, pledge
education, graduate relations, mem
ber development and scholarship. A
model initiation and a model pig din
ner were also conducted.
Overall, the academy was a suc
cess. Many refreshing ideas were ex
changed and many new friends were
made. The academy provided a
valuable learning experience for all
involved.

Alpha Member
Development
The issue of member development
has been pinpointed by both the in
ternational fraternity and the brothers
here at the Alpha Chapter as a major
concern in the ongoing process ofim
provement. The brothers of Alpha
Chapter are taking steps to educate
not only brothers, but other members
of the campus community as well
(Continued on page 2)
alcohol use is not a new issue. 1 recall
many chapter meetings during which
the brothers debated whether to allow
alcohol during our parties and social
events. While I was in college, the de
cision was to simply exclude the use.
We got ourfdl at the DU(Down Un
der bar) located at the corner ofEast
Wheeling and Main Streets!
"From apersonal, anecdotal stand
point,Iam retired (anyone working at
73 has to have his knickers adjusted!)
after a professional career in market
ing management with such firms as
General Electric, Goodyear, Unisys
and Storage Technology. Career
moves sent me from coast to coast.
During the last 10 years ofactivity, 1
established a consulting firm to help
the public and private sectors do busi
ness with one another.
"My present endeavors include ac
tive tennis matches throughout the year
(in Colorado, one can play outdoors 12
months a year!), international travel,
attending Dixielandjazzfestivals, sing
ing with an international champion
ship barbershop chorus, civic activities
such as the Boulder Police Victim Ad
vocates Program, church moderator,
business manager for my townhouse
association, enjoying the fabulous
Colorado Rockies and the University
of Colorado women's basketball team
andfootball team—Go,Buffs! Oh,Iam
also publishing my first book, a re
counting of all the fabulous individu
als, including Fijis, who have entered
and enriched my life.
"1 wish you well with your leader
ship of the fraternity. From what is
indicated by this issue of The Wiji
Fiji, you are well on the way.
