Norris Pig Dinner
Thanks to the hard work of Jude Elliott and Len Frank, the
1993 Norris Pig Dinner was a big success. The Pig Dinner was
held Sunday, April 25, at O'Callahan's Restaurant.
It was good to see so many graduate brothers down enjoy
ing the chapter house and a good round of golf. Many old Fiji
tales could be heard being passed from the graduate brothers
to the undergraduate brothers.
At the dinner for the brothers' entertainment and informa
tion, there were a number of graduate and undergraduate
speakers. Many awards were given, including the Golden Owl
Award for fifty or more years in the fraternity. The Guiding Light
Award went to Brian Bruce, and the Dr. Dill Award went to Tony
Johnson.
Our special guest was the field secretary for the international
fraternity, Dave Willmer. He spoke about the international frater

We thank Chapter House Chef Erie for cooking and garnish

have seen.
Thank you to all the brothers who attended the dinner. We
hope to see all of you again next year. — Brandon Reese

THE BEAVER FIJI
Section Chiefs Report
New BCA Established
The Strength of an undergraduate chapter depends upon the
level of graduate support. In the Fall 1992 issue of The Beaver
Fiji, Mike Goger wrote about the Kappa Omicron Chapter's
financial crisis. As the chapter's problems have become known,
graduate brothers have stepped forward to help out.
The idea of helping our undergraduate brothers work
through the ever-changing fraternity climate at Oregon State
has motivated eight graduate brothers to reestablish the board
In the past, first Mike Goger and then Ken St. Pierre
shouldered the entire undergraduate advising burden singlehandedly. They have been house corporation, board of chapter
advisors, and purple legionnaire all in one. We owe Mike and
Ken our thanks and our promise that from today forward the
advising duties will be divided among several graduates.
Ron Hagen and Dan Forth have joined Ken St. Pierre and
Tom Jackson on the house corporation board. Dan's accounting
expertise will be appreciated. Ron brings his successful business
acumen and building materials supply background to the house
corporation, and will be coordinating a capital campaign. The
BCA president, purple legionnaire, and section chief also are now
attending Kappa Omicron board meetings.
Our board of chapter advisors benefits from the experience
of not one but two former field secretaries. Paul Louis, the frater
nity's 99th field secretary, is BCA president. Paul Davis, the
fraternity's 92nd field secretary and former section chief, works
closely with Paul Louis. The rest of BCA's members are working
as hard as the two Pauls to assist the undergraduates. They
already are working with house committee chairmen, organiz
ing officer and all-chapter retreats, and assisting Mike Van Gor
of chapter advisors. The BCA is charged with the responsibility
of advising the undergraduates in all areas of chapter operation.
The graduate brothers making up the BCA and their areas
are: Tony Boatright, scholarship; Keith Backsen and Jayson Par
tridge, rush; Matt Case and John Martin, pledge education; Paul
Davis, graduate relations/The Beaver Fiji; John Van Dinter,
chapter finances; and Paul Louis, chapter administration.
The overall goals of the BCA are to help the chapter over
come the "reinvention of the wheel"syndrome common with the
high turnover of a fraternity chapter and to offer advice pertain
ing to the issues that affect fraternity life.
The current BCA is made up of younger graduate brothers
who can better relate to the undergraduates and offer advice from
similar experiences. However, graduate brothers from earlier
years are encouraged to share their advice as well. Any graduate
brothers interested in serving on the BCA are encouraged to con
tact Paul Louis.
The BCA looks forward to continuing improvements and ac
complishments by Kappa Omicron. — Paul E. Louis

The 1992-93 academic year proved to be very inspirational.
We witnessed the emergence of a new graduate chapter in
Portland, the birth of a new Fiji Dads Club, the revitalization of
the board of chapter advisors, and the improvement of many pro
grams that promote the excellence that is Phi Gamma Delta.

The graduate chapter has become very concerned in
assisting Kappa Omicron in areas such as rush and career place
ment. Brothers meet the first Thursday of every month at the
MAC in Portland to reminisce and swap stories of careers and

families.
Sparked by the idea of the Mary McCarty Mothers Club,
the Fiji dads decided to give a helping hand and created the Dads
Club. This body raised in excess of $1,500 to be used for restora
tion of the pool table and combination locks on the outer doors.
In addition, they plan to visit the chapter soon to help clean the
house for the summer.
Through the course of the year, we also have seen the in
stallment of two new officers. Brother Allen Thayer has taken
the role of section chief, bringing many excellent ideas and en
thusiasm with him. Jim Allen has accepted the role of purple
legionnaire, and already has provided excellent ideas and advice.
In essence. Phi Gamma Delta has hit its watershed. We have
identified our weaknesses and strengths so that we may continue
the growth of a healthy and successful fraternity. — Kris Terry,

Hargrove Serves as State Senator
James E. Hargrove, *75-888, has been a self-employed
forester for a number of years. He, along with his wife, Laurie,
two sons, and one daughter, lives in Hoquiam on the central
Washington coast.
Jim has just completed the first session of his first term as
a state senator from the 24th District. Before being elected to
the senate, he had served eight years in the house. Jim describes
himself as a conservative democrat. His district encompasses
most of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, and is extremely timber
dependent. The forests are a complex mix of state, federal, tribal,
and private lands, and each has its own political agenda. Jim
utilizes his position as vice chairman of the Senate Natural
Resources Committee to advocate the area's needs. He strong
ly believes in a sustainable-yield forest system. Jim is also a
member of the senate's Health and Human Services, Law and
Justice, and Ways and Means Committees.
Jim's brother, John,'78-988, works in the timber and lumber
business in Montana. Their father, C. Jack,'40-247, is deceased.

at our home in Gearhart. We recently visited our daughter and
her family in Rifle, Colorado. We all had Thanksgiving dinner
with our daughter and our four grandchildren. We also have all
of our children and grandchildren out to Gearhart in the sum
mer. Our 14 grandchildren and their parents make for lots of
activity for the two-to-three weeks they are here."
Walker Lundberg, '46-363, and his wife, Shirley (KKF,
OSU), now reside at 1227 Michelbook Lane, McMinnville, OR

but we moved back to Oregon this spring. We also have a sum
mer place now in Seaside, Oregon."
Robert S. Tonnesen,'46-368, is retired and living at 1127
Vermont Way, San Bruno, CA 94066. He writes, "In the Winter
1992 Beaver Fiji, the caption under the picture of the 1946-51
reunion incorrectly identified me as Richard Koch f52-453].
Richie was there, but I don't see him in the picture."
Robert R. Trout, '64-666, is a nationally rated squash
player. He also is an administrator for the American Scat.
Society."Hank" resides at 7311 Borla PL, Carlsbad, CA 92009,
with his wife. Sue, and their child, J. D. (10).
Rush Report
Rush is off to a great start. The whole chapter is involved,
and it really shows in the 27 RRs we have as of May 12. In order
for you to know how that compares to other fraternities, there
is a total of 118 men who have signed RR cards for 25 frater
nities. The 27 we have gives us 23 percent of the total.
To keep this going, we need your continuing support.
Without it, there is no way we would be at the point we are now.
Anything you can offer to aid our rush effort will be appreciated.
To the brothers that were at the Pig Dinner and donated the
use of their homes and boats for rush events, thank you! If I have
not contacted you personally yet, I soon will. If there are any
leads you might have, please call me any time at(503)758-7505.
Remember, Phi Gamma Delta is "not for college days alone."
William W. Sims, '67-727, is senior vice president of

\r\nKappa Omicron Chapter
The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta
Friendships are important! Our fraternity is important! Let's perpetuate both of them, not only for our own benefit,
but so that our sons and other young men may share in the fellowship offered by Phi Gamma Delta.

Your generosity in 1992 was overwhelming — 170 brothers contributed
$11,221 via the graduate communications program. Forty-two of those brothers
were especially supportive because they donated $100 or more during the program
year. These brothers are indicated with a star on the Honor Roll of Contributors
on page four of the enclosed newsletter.
In addition to financial contributions, 15 brothers sent personal news for the
"Fiji Fables" section. Are your "Fiji Fables" published in this issue? If not, please
take a few minutes to bring your brothers up to date about your family, your career,
and your activities.
This issue of The Beaver Fiji is especially heartwarming because it contains
so many examples of graduate brothers' support for the Kappa Omicron Chapter.
Page one has an article and photographs from the 1993 Norris Pig Dinner, which
was held on April 25. Page two contains frequent mention of the house corpora
tion and the newly established board of chapter advisors. It also tells of the
appointments of Purple Legionnaire Jim Allen and Chief of Section XXXlll Alan
Tbayer, Jr.
On tbe same page, House Manager Kris Terry writes, "The graduate chapter
bas become very concerned in assisting Kappa Omicron in areas such as rush
and career placement." If you would like to assist an undergraduate in finding a
job, please read tbe article titled "KO Job Link" on page two.
As you can see, your support and encouragement are greatly needed and
appreciated. Wbetber you send a financial contribution, write a Fiji Fables entry,
attend a graduate event, or donate your time and energy — or a combination of
tbese — your involvement matters.
