FIJI'S Prove
Victorious:
Homecoming '94
Ryan McCabe Poor '95
Alumni had much to be proud ofthis
fall on both the collegiate and frater
nal levels, as the Little Giants and
the Phi Gams were \ictorious at
Homecoming. The events leading
up to the actual game proved to be a
great indication ofthe fmal product.
The freshman class put in a great
week of work that, although a bit
rocky at first, proved once again that
"persistence is the key." The prepa
ration and diligence they showed in
their ritual practice of the school
song was not as successful in the
chapel sing contest as they would
have liked, finishing in fifth place.
Their determination, though, was
not in vain. It gave them even more
motivation to excel in the remaining
events. They came through. After
long evenings of work all week,
their efforts found reward when they
won first place in the float contest.
This marked the third victory in the
last four years. They also received a
pair of seconds on game day in the
queen contest, with pledge Jeff

riding on the back of Senior Steve
Hunt's motorcycle and in the cheer
competition as well. Their pains,
and even their gender confusion,
were ultimately successful for the
Fiji crew, who were Gctorious in the
overall points totals. This brought
the overall trophy home for the first
time in three years.
Across campus, the wirming
spirit seemed to take hold. The
Little Giants on the gridiron gave
yards, with only 28 ofthose coming
on the ground. The Wabsh "O"
came through with 251 yards in the
air, and 602 yards in total oftense.
Graduates and Undergraduates
mingled together in an informal cel
ebration afterwards, showing once
again that Phi Gamma Delta is not
for college days alone. It was great
to see all ofthe Graduates back, and
the week a proper ending with their
tlie camaraderie was appreciated by
all of us. Congratulations to all of
the Phi Gams w ho put forth a great
overwhelming defeat of Illinois

Whatever Happened to Rafael Chacon '85?
Dan Schenk '95
After graduating from Wabash
College and continuing his educa
tion, Rafael Chacon enjoyed the
chance to return to his alma mater
and teach for a few years starting in
the Fall of 1992. While on campus,
he became active as the Ihirple Le
gionnaire. He had served as Histo
rian in his days as an Undergradu
ate, but he had not had much con
in his automobile. He no longer
drives the Yugo. He told me that he
had outgrown it. (I think he was
having difficulty attaching a gun
rack to such a small car.) Seriously,
though, Rafael helped us through

was appreciated. He told me that he

vous about coming back; he did not
know what to expect. One thing he
found immediately,though,was that
Fiji Hospitality was still function
ing. '"I felt honored to be invited to
be the P L. Everyone in the house
made me feel welcome."
Last May,though,we found out
that Rafael was leaving. He had
received an offer(tenure track)from
the University of Montana at
Missoula. I talked to Rafael on the
phone the other night, and he in
formed me that he is now living "in
the middle of God's country." As
far as his teaching responsibilities,
he has found Missoula to be very^
different. For one thing, they have
17,000 students. He commented
that he missed the small atmosphere
of Wabash, but he also enjoyed the
freedom of a larger college. As for
his projects, he told me that right
now he is working on skiing and
living outdoors. Perhaps the great

Continuing the tradition of the
scholar athlete, many brothers and
pledges of Psi find time outside of
classes to participate in fall and win
ter sports. Not even the two-a-days,
blaring whistles,or heavy work loads
have managed to get in their way.
Starting earliest was the Football
team, which recently claimed an
ICAC title. Seniors Kyle Rapp,

Andrew Zinn and Freshman Ryan

rounded out the Fiji team.
Leading the nationally ranked
Cross Country team is team captain
Jeremy Wright. The freshman class
has made a strong contribution to
add to the depth of the Swimming
team. Grappling on the mats for the
the team with five members. Matt

all represent the class of'98 on the
Cross Country team. Rounding out

Looking forward to the winter
sports, the Wrestling and Swim
ming teams have already begun to
practice. Two strong seniors, Greg
Pease and Rob Weber, are back from
overseas and ready to dive in. Aaron
Idttle Giants are seniors Herman
Kothe and Kevin Pastore,as well as
Charles Boley,Ben l,ower,and Dan
Emerson from the freshman class.
With Football, Cross Country,
and Soccer closing up their seasons
successfully and Swimming and
Wrestling looking forward to their
starts, we are looking forward to a
great year for Fiji athletes and
Wabash College.
