RUSH
The brothers of Epsilon welcomed fifteen new additions to the chapter following a very succ^jJ^J^ and enthusiastic Fall rush.
Thanks to tremendous graduate response and a lot of hard work from the brothers, we began rush iW&^over one hundred names. We
feel that our fifteen pledges are among the finest men on the UNC campus, and we are proud to allow them to be a part of our
strong tradition. Included in the group are four junior transfers, two sophomores, and nine freshmen.
1. Prescott Busch Spigner III - Kinston
2. Paul Whitfield Sylvester - Charlotte
3. David Coale Anderson - Winston Salem
4. Leon Ward Sylvester III - Richlands
9. Christopher Hawes Collier - Kinston
10. Adam Carr Team - Lexington
11. William Patrick Mayo,Jr. - Washington
12. David Brooks Moye,Jr. - Raleigh
5. Richard Austin Russell - Raleigh
13. David Paul Gwyn - Winston-Sdem
6. John McCaUister Cox - Goldsboro
14. Paul WaddeU Collins - Asheville
7. Bryan Cromwell Peimington - Raleigh
15. William Adams Smith III - Raleigh
8. Durwood Robinson Steid - Raleigh
After a dry spring rush in 1983, we managed to get two additional pledges in the Spring of 1984.
1. Phillip Lloyd
2. Adam Jones
We feel that the addition of Phil and Adam make this our best rush in years.
As for the summer of 1984, we have planned a party for July 28 at Brandywine Bay in Morehead City. We are hoping for another
banner msh, and we greatly appreciate the help received from our alumni in 1983 as far as rush is concerned.

\r\nPresident's
Report
The 1983-84 school year has been a good one for Epsilon. The
Fail semester began with a bang, as Epsilon pledged 15
outstanding men -- 4 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 9 freshmen.
We followed that with two more spring pledges, bringing our
total for the year to seventeen. The successful rush seemed to
bring an added sense of unity around the house, as chapter
tone is very positive.
Financially, Epsilon is very sound but the upcoming Fiji
Island should certainly dent our current balance. We current
ly have 47 bill paying members, but we will return 40
brothers in the Fall. Another good rush would have the
chapter in the best shape numerically, and thus financially, in
some time.
The recently held Norris Pig Dinner was successful, as 85
brothers made their way over to the Carolina Inn for the
Treasurer's
Report
Due to the support of the alumni, brotherhood, and parents,
the undergraduate chapter here at Epsilon is in a very good
financial position. With the new year, the overall house bill
rose only slightly with respect to inflation. Rent was increased
to $300.00 per semester from $280.00 but this is still much
lower than all dorms and apartments here at North Carolina.
A strong pledge class of 17 brought the number of members
paying dues up to 46 which has helped keep prices down.
The cabinet is presently working on a plan in which house
bills will be able to be paid in full at the beginning of the
semester with a small discount. One final bill at the end of
festivities. Brother Mike Easley was a most entertaining

the year. Once again, thanks to all brothers, parents and the
speaker. We've heard complaints that a number of you did

such an invitation to send their address to the house and the

problem will be taken care of.
I look forward to seeing all of you in the Fall with the coming
football season, one that we all hope will be successful.
Again, please respond to our request for potential rushees, as
your help is essential.

Graduate brother contributions and dues are necessary to sustain it
and are sincerely appreciated. For this reason, Epsilon urges its
graduate brothers to aid the finances of their fraternity. At this time,
graduate brother news for this letter is also needed. Any such items
are encouraged to be submitted to the editor. This includes graduate
brother news, rush recommendations, address changes, and anything
else of interest to the fraternity.
\r\nFrom The
Norris Pig Dinner
House Corporation
Pig Dinner weekend was held on March 30 and 31. On Fri
day night, there was a cocktail party which was given in honor
of all returning graduates. Pig Dinner was held the following
night at the Carolina Inn. Over eighty-five graduates attend
ed, making the dinner a big success. Brother Michael Easley,
'72, was the guest speaker. He gave a very entertaining and
humorous speech which told the audience to "look to the
lighter side of life and find humor in it.'' He used many fun
ny examples from his experiences as District Attorney in
Treasurer's Report
Thanks to 212 graduate brothers, Epsilon is now in a much
better financial position than we were two years ago. We are
going to have to re-roof the house and buy a new hot water
heater, but thanks to you, we hopefully have the money to do
this.
Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus Counties.
Sincerely,
I wish to personally thank each of the brothers who supported
the House last year (see the final list printed elsewhere in this
Bob Winston
issue). This list is based on actual cash received. We received a
record $20,855 in cash and we still have another $940.00
outstanding in pledges from eight brothers.
We cannot rest on our laurels, however. Each year, we face a
higher operation budget. We need money to maintain the
excellent traditions of the past and to encourage new ideas
and programs for the future. Please help us this year by send
ing in your check for at least $25.00. So far, we have already
received over $1,000 since my letter went out a week ago. Our
goal this year is $7,500.00. Help us get there.
A lot of brothers have asked what we spent the money on last
year. Here is a breakdown.
Interest
Property taxes
Insurance
Repairs & Maintenance
$3,395.00
4,439.00
4,132.00
1,390.00
Alumni mailings
Alumni support
611.00
681.00
Furniture and house additions
12,466.00
The above figures are fiscal '82 - '83 expenditures. In '81
- 82, we spent $17,624. The $20,855 that we raised actually
covered both of those years since the fundraising drive started
in December '81.
■'KISSING OF THE PIG"
Thanks again to all of those that contributed. If you didn't
contribute, please do so this year. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Fraternally,

House Corporation
Thanks To Brother Carter
The Brothers of Epsilon would like to send a big "thank
you" to Brother Rusty Carter of Tabor City. Brother Carter
sacrificies much time and money each year by printing the
Epsilon Owl for the undergraduates free of charge. He does a
fantastic job of taking the anicles we give him and turning
them into a newsletter that can be appreciated by all of the
graduate brothers. These efforts show a great deal of
purpleness, and all of us at Vance Hall are very grateful.

Intramurals - Fiji's Win
Basketball Crown
Phi Gamma teams are dominating the Spring Intramural
season. The Fiji Gold basketball team set school records as
they rolled a 12-0 season and won the championship. The
team was loaded with talent, with seniors Curtis Hathaway,
Edward Bogles,John Kerr, and Julian Williamson leading the
way.Jim Lilley and John "Sidney'' Lowe also played big roles
in their march to the top. After winning all five regular
season games, Fiji Gold entered the tournament with the
championship in mind. There were over ICQ teams in the
tourney, yet our team went 7-0 in the post-season, winning
every game by at least 12 points.
The Fiji softball team is also off to a great start as usual.
Despite numerous cancellations due to rain, the team is now
1-1 and has an excellent chance of making the playoffs.
Under the leadership of slugger Skip Hill and ace pitcher
Julian Williamson, the team has an excellent shot at the
finals.
Social Report
spring has been a very sociahs^Json this year at Vance Hall.
Upon returning to school, we Kid mixers with the Chi O's,
KD's, and ADP's. In Febmary,''"vc had an ice skating mixer
with the Tri Belt's and Zete'sSiiiich was a big success.
We have had three great
parties this semester; a
Valentine's Day cocktail witHt]ti*4ete's, Pig Dinner cocktail,
and another combined effort wil#ihe Phi Belt's. High atten
dance and beautiful dates ha*c liiiipn prevalent at all three of
these functions.

Fiji Island weekend turned out to be one of the best ever,
due to the hard work of thei liji»others and the bands we
selected. Friday night, a group rocked the house with a mix
ture of fiink and rock-n-roll. Sskturday's band, the Cruise-omatics, was even beter. They played many old rock songs
which made everyone forget their hangovers from the night
before.
We have also planned several events to wind up the year.
These events include a cookout with our Little Sisters and a
blowout in the back yard.

Thanks To Brother Woody
The Brothers of Epsilon would like to extend our
sincerest thanks to Brother Dan Woody. He loaned us
his chainsaws and other equipment which came in han

\r\nHouse Manager's Report
As in the past, this year Vance Hall has been in need of
many repairs to maintain its good condition. Through the
work of the Brothers and the pledges, we have taken care of
any needed repairs. The foyer and T.V. room are in excellent
condition thanks to the fall pledge class who painted both
rooms during The Pilgrimage. The pledges also built a much
needed bench for the front yard. But although the
brotherhood has no shortage of projects or willing hands, our
abilities and funds are not able to meet many of the physical
needs of the house.
With the help of the House Corporation, Vance Hall has
undergone major improvements and more are planned in the
future. One such improvement was getting the heating
system in working condition after several years of deficient
operation. Future improvements include repairing the porch
in front of the President's room, which for several years has
been deteriorating badly. The quarry tile and iron rail will be
replaced. The roof is also scheduled to undergo repairs, pro
bably during the summer months. Renovations such as these
are possible only because of the generosity of the graduate
brothers.
Many thanks go to B.T. Harrington for doing a fine job
keeping the house in top shape. With the future help of
B.T., the undergraduate and graduate brothers, and the
House Corporation, we can continue to be proud of our
reputation of having the nicest house on campus.
House Manager
