9:30 am — House Corporation Meeting - Election of Trustees
You have heard a great deal from us during the past year or
two concerning problems with Gamma Phi and the need for
financial and personal support. You have also been told
recently that significant progress is being made, with the house
now in better physical condition than it has been in for many,
many years, along with a rededicated, reoriented undergrad
uate chapter.
We had asked for your contributions to help rehabilitate
the chapter house. You responded and those contributions,

us to do the job. The results are there for you to see.
Then, with the graduate trusteeship required to change the
direction of the chapter and restore an appropriate standard
of academics, fraternity and social conduct, we again asked for
your help. With only 25 men living in the house we needed
financial support to directly subsidize the chapter. Forty
percent of our graduate brothers responded to this request
and we were able to survive. This fall we have 40 men living
in the house and the chapter is self-supporting.
We're on the right road, but we can't stop now. We have
two major goals. The first is to replace our old or inappro
priate furniture on the first floor and in some of the sleeping
rooms. We are again asking for a contribution of $75 or more
to cover both graduate brother dues and new furniture for the
house. This is extremely important in that we need new
furnishings to match up with the chapter membership and our
physical house. Our goal for this academic year is $22,500 and
we want to start with your contribution.
Beyond the immediate need for furniture we are looking
forward to the centennial of Gamma Phi in 1988. We would
like to burn both our first and second mortgages at that
celebration.
The lack of graduate support was a major contributor to
our recent Gamma Phi problems. Your continued and renewed
support wil l help us avoid them in the future.
We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Pig Dinner Weekend
Set for April 19-20
After many years of frustration due to conflicts with
Homecoming activities, the board of trustees voted to move
our Pig Dinner to the spring. Away from the entanglements of
a football weekend, this will be Gamma Phi's very own
"Homecoming." Make plans to join us on April 19 - 20, 1985.
Chapter Marks Year of
Growth and Progress
During the last week of August 1983, 17 undergraduate
brothers and 7 pledges returned to Gamma Phi to begin a year
in which none of us knew what to expect or how to react. Fiji
was undergoing a face-lift and changes were occurring every
where. One year later. Gamma Phi has shown improvement in
all areas. A core of 24 undergraduates has grown to over 40
enthusiastic Fijis and the brotherhood continues to regenerate
and expand.
Physically, the house looks great, although some furniture
needs to be replaced. Membership is increasing steadily, thanks
to an intensified rush program that utilizes the University
computer to file and organize rushees. In addition. Rush
Chairmen Jeff Brunie and Ed Clarke are operating various
rush functions to continue the recruitment of young Fijis.
The social program is also being revised to incorporate more
dated functions (like hayrides) and controlled house parties.
University relations have improved through our program of
inviting Penn State faculty and student leaders to dine with us
at the house. Fiji continued to do well in intramurals, winning
the basketball championship for the second year in a row.
Ritual and chapter room decorum improved under the
guidance of now-retired Purple Legionnaire Vinson San
Angelo. Gamma Phi also produced its first national field

10:00 am — House Corporation Meeting. Criticisms and
remarks invited.
12:00 noon — Fiji Sports Tournaments: Golf, Tennis (pre
arranged foursomes/doubles appreciated), Softball.
6:00 pm — Cocktail Reception at the Lodge. Live music, light
beverages and mixers provided - B.Y.O.B.; Appropriate attire.
7:00 pm — Norris Pig Dinner at the Nittany Lion Inn. Our
guest speaker to be announced.
A Buffet Supper for wives, dates, family members and
guests will be served at Gamma Phi.
9:00 pm - 1:00 am — House Party for Fijis and Guests.
Rooms are available now at the Nittany Lion Inn, Sheraton,
Holiday Inn and other area motels. (Don't be disappointedreserve well ahead!) A babysitting service is planned.
Please join us for a relaxed weekend in State College. We
plan to make this the most actively attended Pig Dinner in
years, and definitely the most fun!
secretary since Mike Stewart with the appointment of our
former chapter president. Bob Baney.
Obviously, Gamma Phi is progressing in many areas. But
perhaps the greatest improvement, to which all the others can
be attributed, is the increasing graduate involvement. Several
graduate trustees are in touch with us on a weekly basis giving
guidance and supervision, while numerous other graduate
brothers throughout the country have contributed needed
time and money to strengthen Fiji at Penn State. Without your
help, the undergraduates couldn't have come so far. Thanksl
Gamma Phi has weathered a rebuilding year. The new
cabinet and undergraduate brothers are ready for continued
growth, positive change and a bigger, better Fiji. Stop by and
see us at Homecoming, October 20.

Sport-a-thon Nets $7,000
for Special Olympics
Gamma Phi's Second Annual Sport-a-thon benefiting the
Pennsylvania Special Olympics was again a success, raising
$7,000. We were honored to have been nominated for the
prestigious Special Olympics Award for Distinguished Service
to the Mentally Retarded Through Sports, and we were very
proud to have received honorable mention.
Eighteen fraternities and sororities participated in the event
by sending out "sponsorship mailers" to friends and relatives.
Held on April 1, the Sport-a-thon consisted of a 30-minute
run around a 220-yard track, with each organization supplying
one runner. Phi Mu Delta's Mike Ross broke the previous
year's record, set by brother Tom Sciabica '83, by running 39
laps in the allotted time.
