CONGRATULATIONS NEW
INITIATES
Last spring, Delta Xi proudly initiated seven new Phi
Gams after an educational but intensive pledge quar
ter. The men are a welcome addition to the house and
have demonstrated a profound respect for the tradition
upon which Phi Gamma Delta is based. Foremost, their
dedication during their arduous probationary period
last spring truly showed this group's desire to become
active members of the University of California's finest
fraternity. Congratulations and welcome aboard:

Berne Evans — Los Angeles
Dave Simonson — Orinda
Tom Midura — Orinda
Troy Kjos — Menio Park

DELTA XI UNDERGOES
RENOVATION PROJECT
After some post-finals abuse and the inevitable col
lapse of a sixty-year old building, DeltaXi underwenta
major facelift during the summer months of 1985. The
100,000 dollar project, overseen by Phi Gam contractor
Bill Gilmore, has rendered many improvements upon
the fraternity which is universally regarded as the best
looking house on campus. The most notable improve
ment is the installation of all-new hardwood floors in
the living room, dining room, and entry commons.
Also, to the delight of Mrs. Allen, the entire kitchen
floor was replaced along with its understructure. The
plumbing, long a problem at the house, was completely
rebuilt. The classic tile roof was renovated in necessary
spots, and new carpet, bedroom doors, and refinishing
of walls and interior panelling completed the project.
The new look of the house should help build deep pride
among the members and pledges for the physical
structure of Phi Gamma Delta. At the same time, our
fall pledges will surely be kept busy maintaining the
new look that the Delta Xi chapter house acquired this
past summer.

Though it is early in the year, we are already faced
with many challenges. Chief among them is the chailenge posed by the maintenance of our beautiful home
and the need for cooperation and understanding with
our House Corporation. Over the summer, $106,000
was spent in the most extensive renovation of the
house in recent history. The roof was completely
replaced as was the hardwood floor, and cook Inez
Allen enjoys a refurbished kitchen, while the 2nd floor
showers work perfectly and new carpet is found every
where. Yet the challenge poses itself: With the house in

Beach Trip Highlights
Social Calendar
As usual, the Fiji house enjoyed a very active social
calendar this past year. During thefall, several pre-and
post-game parties made a 2-9 footbail season at least
somewhat enjoyable. Presents, the first date party of
the year, kicked-off the schooi year with a bang. Un
doubtedly, the highlight of the fail social schedule was
a Fiji/date all-day trip to Stinson Beach. Volleybail,surf
andafun bus ridemadetheday aitogethersuccessfui.
The NorCai Phi Gams proved that they not oniy get
prettier dates but aiso dominate in voileyball. Pizza
afterward at Fiji Mike Jackson's Bungalow restaurant
also made the day enjoyable. A great road trip that will
have to be repeated this year. Both the Biack Diamond
and White Star formals were very weii organized by
some of the oider brothers, and a number of invita

tional parties in which our very own band "The HiTops" highlighted the rest of the sociai season around
the Fiji iodge. The military brawl was as thrilling as
ever, and the Fiji Islander in April was marked by strong
participation of the brothers ail week long in prepara
tion of the most fun and talked-about party on the
Berkeley campus. Mike Meagher and Jim Wise head up
a social program which is both organized and filled
with exciting parties.
Delta Xi extends many thanks to the House Corpora
tion and the following people who donated their time,
skills, and materials this past summer in order to bring
the Fiji house up to its present restored state:

Treasurer's Report
The Delta XI chapter has started its 1985-86 financial
year on solid ground. Based on an extraordinary feel
ing of pride and togetherness this year by the under
graduate brotherhood, we have decided to implement
a policy of "optional housebill payments." Under this
new format, each undergraduate member, instead of
being required to pay for room and board, will have the
pleasure of donating to the chapter. These donations
can be of any amount. We only ask the brothers to give
what they feel from the heart.
In terms of actual cash receipts thus far, the new
"DCC" Leydorf, Jim Platz and Steve Moreno were in
strumental in bringing the Fiji house near to a cham
pionship in Softball. Steve Crevelli and Jeff Luini cap
tained an intimidating soccer team that gained its
share of victories. Adding to its athletic prowess, the
Fiji house placed eight players on the California
Lacrosse team, and seven players on the perennial
powerhouse Cal Rugby team.
In sum, the Fiji house proved through another sea
son of competition that it is unrivaled when it comes to
putting excellent on the playing field, as Phi Gams
dominated in both intramural and intercollegiate sports
this year.
program is off to a rather slow start. However, we are
expecting November and December to be boom months
due to the holiday spirit. In terms of house morale, I
personally have never seen the guys happier. At first
the sudden increase of new stereos and wardrobes was

purchases can be attributed to the new sense of Fiji

Fiji's Capture Hoop Crown
The highlight of the sporting season for Phi Gamma
Delta occurred when Fiji's Rick Ronald, Jim Hall, and
Clark Porter combined to win thethree-man basketball
championship here at Gal. Claiming as his only source
of motivation,"I want a T-shirt," Jim Hall led the squad
in an exciting game which featured a very partisan Fiji
crowd. The game was exciting for the whole house,
although championships arenothing new around Delta
Xi. Speaking of championships, pledge Gary Hein,
along with upperclassmen Don James and Ron Zenker
led the California rugby team to the national champion
ship with victories over Illinois and Colorado in the
final four. Hein, James and Zenker also start on the
varsity football team at California. In intramurals, the
Fiji house witnessed a marked increase in participation
in all sports. Past president Pete Stafford led the Phi
Gams to a second place finish in football and Tom
chain. Thus when our House Corporation's efforts are
directed solely at keeping alive a tradition which reared
them and at providing such an opportunity to men who
are otherwise strangers, we as undergraduates must
perceive that ou r role is to cheerf u lly keep that tradition
alive, too. We must perceive that this requires very
modestly the upkeep of our home before anything,
before the fraternity takes up the struggle of cultivating
the graces of good living. Though the fraternity is
much more than the buildings which house it, it is,
however, nothing without a home.
We embark on another year, but we do so with these
things in mind. The House Corporation has completed
the physical renovation of our home.Together, we now
embark on the spiritual renovation. I am always hope
ful. Fraternity, in its purest sense, is too good an idea to
be met with failure.
Brothers, behold how good it is for a brethren to
dwell together in unity.

Frank Norris Scholarship Fund
Although no formal request for donations has been
made the past two years, the "Frank Norris Scholarship
Fund" is still in existence. An annual award is made to
an Undergraduate Brother at the Norris Pig Dinner.
You are reminded that contributions may still be made
to the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation,
marked for the Frank Norris Scholarship Fund, 725
15th Street, N.W., Suite 808, Washington, D.C. 20005.
The Unsung Fiji Heroes
It takes much effort by all the undergraduate broth
ers to make a fraternity run smoothly. At Delta Xi, 1985
has been marked by a superflous effort on the part of
several brothers who dedicate their time to various
important tasks around the house. The food has never
been better at the lodge, and this credit goes in full to
new food steward Jim "my back hurts this week"
Medall. With such delicacies as potstickers, chicken
mcNuggets, and fried chicken, even Bruce Sommers is
putting on a little weight. Jim has the job under control

and has shown an exceptional penchant for doing
things with food. Speaking of food, a new brother has
recently tackled the controversial job of lunchtime
hasher. Charlie"Pee-Wee" Muller has caught thefever,
and can often be seen assisting the pledges with their
hashing duties in the evenings. Way to go. Chuckles! In
terms of house maintenance, Tom Carhart is keeping
the house in order after itssummer renovation. Recently
Tom installed fire alarms in all bedrooms, enhancing
one of Delta Xi's qualities: fire safety. Tom enjoys the
job of house manager which he has held now for two
semesters, and is finally reaching the point where he is
fixing more doors than he breaks. Mike Meagher keeps
the Fiji social calendar alive, implementing weeknight
exchange-barbeques, sorority arobics, and some ex
citing bowling parties. Mike himself is active socially,
and none of his parties ever come up short. Delta Xi's
fine fall pledge class is under the distinguished leader
ship of Lou "Jeff" Ini, a reformed hazer who has found
his niche as pledge trainer. Pete Nixon keeps up the
always-busy job of sports chairman and has followed
in his predecessor's footsteps quite well.
Thank you to these Fiji's who give their time and
skills to make Phi Gamma Delta what it truly is: a
fraternity.
